On the morning of May 11, 1970, skies darkened over Lubbock and winds began to rise, setting the stage for the kind of storm many in Tornado Alley pray never comes their way.
By late that Monday evening, dozens of tornadoes had touched down across the Great Plains and Midwest. In Lubbock, two tornadoes struck that evening: the first, relatively small, around 8:45 p.m., roughly an hour before, as described by the National Weather Service, 'the most massive tornado touched down over the heart of the city of Lubbock."
As it tore through downtown — then a bustling hub of commerce and daily life — the Lubbock tornado killed 26 people, injured more than 1,500, and caused over $100 million in damage. The destruction was so severe that it led meteorologists to rethink how tornadoes were measured, ultimately resulting in the creation of the Fujita Scale one year later, which rates tornadoes by intensity and damage.
Its destruction was so extreme that Tetsuya Theodore Fujita, the University of Chicago professor who developed the tornado intensity scale, gave it one of only two experimental F6 ratings ever considered. His analysis of the Lubbock storm became, as researcher Thomas P. Grazulis described, 'the most detailed mapping ever done, up to that time, of the path of a single tornado.'
But it was later downgraded to F5, as the scale was never intended to exceed that limit, and remains only one of six to ever touch down in the Lone Star State in recorded history.
Over the years, as tornado science advanced and the understanding of tornadoes and their damage improved, limitations in the original Fujita Scale became apparent to meteorologists and forecasters. Decades after the Lubbock storm, researchers at Texas Tech University played a key role in developing the more accurate Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale.
"NWS personnel, who are responsible for rating tornadoes, have expressed frustrations in applying the Fujita Scale in a consistent and accurate manner," faculty from the Wind Science and Engineering Center wrote in their proposal. "Weak links in a structural system or a slow-moving storm sometimes lead to an over rating of a tornado event."
Tornadoes are measured on the EF Scale, which replaced the Fujita Scale in 2007.
The scale measures wind speeds of tornadoes by looking at the damage caused on the ground after it has dissipated. They are ranked from EF0 to EF5.
EF0 - light damage with wind speeds of 65-85 mph.
EF1 - moderate damage with winds of 86-110 mph.
EF2 - considerable damage with winds of 111-135 mph.
EF3 - severe damage with winds of 136-165 mph.
EF4 - devastating damage with 166-200 mph.
EF5 - With winds of over 200+ mph, they are the most devastating tornadoes on the scale.
A recent addition to the scale is an EFU tornado — an unidentifiable tornado. The National Weather Service classification is given when it knows there's a tornado, but there's not always a lot of damage to classify it.
Damage Indicators
Fujita Scale: This scale rates tornadoes based on the damage they cause to structures like buildings, trees, and other objects. However, it used general damage indicators, focusing on the level of destruction without taking into account the specifics of building construction or more detailed factors.
Enhanced Fujita Scale: The EF Scale refines those damage indicators by considering the quality of the structures affected. It differentiates between types of buildings, such as weak versus well-built houses, and uses a broader set of damage indicators, which allows meteorologists to assess wind speeds more accurately.
Wind Speed Limits
Fujita (F) Scale: The F Scale was based on observed damage, with wind speeds estimated indirectly, using the severity of destruction as a guide. This method was criticized for being too generalized, especially when differentiating between tornadoes with similar intensity but different damage types. The scale also lacked the precision needed to account for environmental factors like terrain or building quality.
Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale: The EF Scale was developed to improve tornado intensity ratings by providing a more accurate estimate of wind speeds. It assigns a range of wind speeds for each category (EF0 to EF5) and uses detailed damage indicators, like distinguishing between damage to well-built houses versus mobile homes, allowing for more precise wind speed estimates based on specific damage observations.

Triple-digit temperatures are predicted for this weekend. Beyond that, the days are expected to be not much cooler. It is a reminder that the blistering Bakersfield summer has started, and residents and visitors will look to water for relief. But danger lurks in the many local swimming pools and the even bigger attraction, the Kern River. Urging pool safety during a recent press conference, Kern County health officials promoted the department's Water Watcher program, which calls for designating adults to always keep close tabs on children frolicking around backyard pools. They cited federal findings that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional, injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4. On average, 350 children under the age of 5 lose their lives to drowning every year in the United States. Within the past five years, 16 children in Kern County have lost their lives to drowning: two in the Kern River, two in bathtubs and 12 in swimming pools. In advance of the Memorial Day Weekend last month, county officials performed a grisly annual tradition — updating Kern Canyon entry signs to warn of the Kern River's danger. This year, the number of drownings posted on the signs went from 334 to 342. Eight people were taken by the Kern in 2024. Last year's July 4th holiday was particularly deadly. Four people drowned. The count, which began in 1968, doesn't include people who died in the upper Kern River, in Tulare County, which doesn't keep drowning statistics on its section of river. It also doesn't include people who are still missing and presumed dead in the river. 'We tell the public this every year: The Kern River is dangerous,' said Sgt. Rodney Jones, who oversees the Kern County Sheriff's Office's search and rescue division. 'Do not go in it without professional guides or gear.' The water is cold and deceptively fast with numerous hidden hazards — branches, rocks, debris — that can snag you, trap you and pull you under, he said. The division posts additional search and rescue teams on holidays along the river to respond to emergencies and remind people about the dangers. Asked if Kern officials would consider closing off the river, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood responded with a firm NO. 'The river is a public place and there's way too many access points for us to patrol,' he said. 'You can't legislate stupidity. If you need to be told to stay out of that river, there's something wrong with you.' Youngblood is right. It's up to all of us to heed repeated warnings and keep ourselves, families and friends safe. ■ Watch children closely. Never let them into the river unattended. ■ Do not go in the river if you can't swim. ■ Use adequate flotation devices, not drug store floaties. ■ Make sure someone in your party can contact 911. Service in the canyon is sketchy. ■ Alcohol (or other mind-altering substances) do not mix well with the river. Several river rafting companies operate along the Kern. They offer safe and varying trips — depending on people's interests and experience. SJV Water, a local news outlet that covers water issues, reports that with less snowfall this year, the river will be running lower than in recent past years. But even though the water flow is lower, Jones noted that most people are not able to climb out if they are trapped on a rock. As evidence, on Sunday a man was found dead in the river. The man had gone missing after swimming in Isabella Lake without a flotation device. Just a few days later, a teenage girl was rescued from a tree in the river at Hart Park, just 90 minutes after another person was rescued from the same area, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office. They were brought to shore uninjured. Again, the Kern County Sheriff's Office urged the public to always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejacket when in or near the river. 'Despite appearing calm in some areas, the river's cold temperatures, swift currents and hidden hazards can quickly turn deadly,' KCSO once again warned in a news release.

Pairing kids up can help keep everyone safe,' Vanderhoff said. He also recommends wearing an SPF 30 or higher, a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight long-sleeve shirts to avoid sunburn. In the glassy confines of Alice Tully Hall on Thursday, the third annual Runway AI Film Festival celebrated an entirely new art form. The winning film, Total Pixel Space, was not made in the traditional sense. It was conjured by Jacob Adler, a composer and educator from Arizona State University, stitched together from image generators, synthetic voices, and video animation tools — most notably Runway's Gen-3, the company's text-to-video model (Runway Gen-4 was released in March). Video generation technology emerged in public in 2022 with Meta's crude video of a flying Corgi wearing a red cape and sunglasses. Since then, it has fundamentally transformed filmmaking, dramatically lowering barriers to entry and enabling new forms of creative expression. Independent creators and established filmmakers alike now have access to powerful AI tools such as Runway that can generate realistic video scenes, animate storyboards, and even produce entire short films from simple text prompts or reference images. As a result, production costs and timelines are shrinking, making it possible for filmmakers with limited resources to achieve professional-quality results and bring ambitious visions to life. The democratization of content creation is expanding far beyond traditional studio constraints, empowering anyone with patience and a rich imagination. Adler's inspiration came from Jorge Luis Borges' celebrated short story The Library of Babel, which imagines a universe where every conceivable book exists in an endless repository. Adler found a parallel in the capabilities of modern generative machine learning models, which can produce an unfathomable variety of images from noise (random variations in pixel values much like the 'snow' on an old television set) and text prompts. 'How many images can possibly exist,' the dreamy narrator begins as fantastical AI-generated video plays on the screen: a floating, exploding building; a human-sized housecat curled on a woman's lap. 'What lies in the space between order and chaos?' Adler's brilliant script is a fascinating thought experiment that attempts to calculate the total number of possible images, unfurling the endless possibilities of the AI-aided human imagination. 'Pixels are the building blocks of digital images, tiny tiles forming a mosaic,' continues the voice, which was generated using ElevenLabs. 'Each pixel is defined by numbers representing color and position. Therefore, any digital image can be represented as a sequence of numbers,' the narration continues, the voice itself a sequence of numbers that describe air pressure changes over time. 'Therefore, every photograph that could ever be taken exists as coordinates. Every frame of every possible film exists as coordinates.' Winners at the 3rd Annual International AIFF 2025 Runway was founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela, Alejandro Matamala, and Anastasis Germanidis, after they met at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Valenzuela, who serves as CEO, says he fell in love with neural networks in 2015, and couldn't stop thinking about how they might be used by people who create. Today, it's a multi-million-user platform, used by filmmakers, musicians, advertisers, and artists, and has been joined by other platforms, including OpenAI's Sora, and Google's Veo 3. What separates Runway from many of its competitors is that it builds from scratch. Its research team — which comprises most of the company — develops its own models, which can now generate up to about 20 seconds of video. The result, as seen in the works submitted to the AI Film Festival, is what Valenzuela calls 'a new kind of media.' The word film may soon no longer apply. Nor, perhaps, will filmmaker. 'The Tisches of tomorrow will teach something that doesn't yet have a name,' he said during opening remarks at the festival. Indeed, Adler is not a filmmaker by training, but a classically trained composer, a pipe organist, and a theorist of microtonality. 'The process of composing music and editing film,' he told me, 'are both about orchestrating change through time.' He used the image generation platform Midjourney to generate thousands of images, then used Runway to animate them. He used ElevenLabs to synthesize the narrator's voice. The script he wrote himself, drawing from the ideas of Borges, combinatorics, and the sheer mind-bending number of possible images that can exist at a given resolution. He edited it all together in DaVinci Resolve. The result? A ten-minute film that feels as philosophical as it is visual. It's tempting to frame all this as the next step in a long evolution; from the Lumière brothers to CGI, from Technicolor to TikTok. But what we're witnessing isn't a continuation. It's a rupture. 'Artists used to be gatekept by cameras, studios, budgets,' Valenzuela said. 'Now, a kid with a thought can press a button and generate a dream.' At the Runway Film Festival, the lights dimmed, and the films came in waves of animated hallucinations, synthetic voices, and impossible perspectives. Some were rough. Some were polished. All were unlike anything seen before. This isn't about replacing filmmakers. It's about unleashing them. 'When photography first came around — actually, when daguerreotypes were first invented — people just didn't have the word to describe it,' Valenzuela said during his opening remarks at the festival. 'They used this idea of a mirror with a memory because they'd never seen anything like that. … I think that's pretty close to where we are right now.' Valenzuela was invoking Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.'s phrase to convey how photography could capture and preserve images of reality, allowing those images to be revisited and remembered long after the moment had passed. Just as photography once astonished and unsettled, generative media now invites a similar rethinking of what creativity means. When you see it — when you watch Jacob Adler's film unfold — it's hard not to feel that the mirror is starting to show us something deeper. AI video generation is a kind of multiverse engine, enabling creators to explore and visualize an endless spectrum of alternate realities, all within the digital realm. 'Evolution itself becomes not a process of creation, but of discovery,' his film concludes. 'Each possible path of life's development … is but one thread in a colossal tapestry of possibility.'
