Riverside wins PIAA baseball title as pitcher Zach Hare makes history

CBS News18-06-2025
Riverside High School's baseball team won the PIAA 3A Championship last week and its star pitcher made history in the process.
It was a milestone win for Riverside, but there's a lot more to the playoff run.
Riverside star pitcher Zach Hare set a new national record this past season for the most consecutive no-hit innings.
Hare, a Slippery Rock University recruit, racked up 36 & 1/3 consecutive no-hit innings en route to helping lead his team to the PIAA 3A title this year with a win over Mt. Carmel.
"It was one no hitter and I was like "Oh, that's cool" then another and another and I was like what's going on here," Hare said. "I went on Maxpreps and saw I beat a national record for postseason no hits and I was like 'Holy smokes.' So I'm still trying to take it all in because now that the season's over I can sit back and look back on it without having to worry about another game."
Hare went on to say he's still in disbelief about his pitching milestone, attributing part of the success to his defense, who made the plays necessary in the outfield to keep the streak alive and keep the team alive through its postseason run.
"When we pick our goals we try to be realistic and the kids all felt winning the state championship was realistic," said Riverside head coach Dan Oliastro."
Oliastro, 81, is in his 57th season as the head coach at Riverside and is now six for six in the PIAA title game. Oliastro's teams also won state championships in 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, and 2023.
"People ask me about all the accolades," Oliastro said. "To me, it's the process. It's the day to day involvement with these kids."
Oliastro said there was one point in his career when he thought about leaving, but former players wouldn't let him.
"He heard that I was thinking about giving it up and he said 'Coach you can't quit,'" Oliastro said. "You don't believe how many kids you're touching and helping."
Oliastro says he still feels like a kid out on the diamond after more than five decades and that he doesn't really have a timeline on when, or if he'll walk away from the game.
"I'm still like a little kid," Oliastro said. "I'm still like a little kid in the backyard playing wiffle ball with my brother. I always talk to my agent. My agent never makes a mistake."
For Hare, Oliastro and Riverside, it was quite the end to a baseball season with a PIAA title and a new national record.

Peralta allows 1 hit in 6 innings and Brewers beat Cubs 7-0 in 1st half of doubleheader

CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed one hit and struck out six batters and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the first half of a Monday doubleheader. All-Star pitcher Peralta (15-5, 2.78 ERA) shut Chicago out over six innings to help Milwaukee advance to an MLB-best record of 79-45. The Brewers, which had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped by the Reds on Sunday, have won 23 of 28 games since the break. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each had two hits, two RBIs and a solo home run to lead the way. Milwaukee's Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig and Grant Anderson held Chicago to one combined hit over the final three innings of relief. The Brewers attacked Cubs pitcher Cade Horton (7-4, 3.08) early. After Turang's homer in the third, Horton allowed three of the next four batters to reach base and was removed from the game with a blister on his right middle finger. Reliever Drew Pomeranz retired the ensuing batter to escape the inning with a one-run deficit. Chicago called up two hitters on Monday in Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell. Little's throwing error in the sixth allowed a run to score, while Hollowell gave up four earned runs on four walks and two hits in the seventh. Key moment Down 1-0, the Cubs had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Peralta walked three consecutive batters to load the bases with one out, but he struck out rookie Owen Caissie and retired Nico Hoerner to end the inning. Key stat Milwaukee surrendered just two hits to Chicago, which drops nine games behind the Brewers in the National League Central. Up next The Cubs and Brewers are set to play the second half of Monday's doubleheader at 7:05 p.m. CT. Neither team had named its starting pitcher. Chicago and Milwaukee will continue the series until Thursday. ___ AP MLB:

Texas Tech RB Quinten Joyner reportedly tears ACL, will miss season

Quinten Joyner's first season at Texas Tech will have to wait. Joyner tore his ACL on Monday, according to On3's Pete Nakos. While specifics of the injury are not known, he'll now miss the entire 2025 season recovering. Joyner transferred into Texas Tech this past offseason after spending his first two seasons at USC. He racked up 478 rushing yards and had four total touchdowns with the Trojans last season. The Texas native opted to move back to the state and join Texas Tech this fall, where he was expected to be a key piece of its offense. The Red Raiders, who opened at No. 23 in the AP preseason poll, will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their season opener on Aug. 30. This post will be updated with more information shortly.
