Touting the benefits of a leadership program in the ag sector

A broader understanding of agriculture and expanding your network are just a few skills emphasized in the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP), which has been shaping the future of the industry for 40 years.
Tracey Arts, a recent participant, says the experience led to her becoming more involved in the sector, including becoming a director of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA).
'I wanted more experience and to get more comfortable talking to a group of people, whether a smaller group or a larger group, which gave me the confidence to do more public speaking,' she explained of how she ended up joining the leadership program.
Originally from a Niagara peninsula dairy farm, she and her husband operate a dairy farm near Thamesford. She's represented Oxford and Elgin counties as an OFA director since 2020.
When looking for a leadership program, she wanted something related to agriculture, in keeping with her farming background. The AALP allowed her to learn from members of the agriculture sector across the province.
'We're always great about talking about what we know in our little area, but being a representative on the provincial level – we represent all of Ontario – I wanted some of that aspect,' she said.
The OFA puts on the program with three other founding partners, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, the University of Guelph and the Foundation for Rural Living (now Rural Ontario Institute). AALP is currently training its 21st class, and the program has been running since 1984.
Gabe Ferguson from the Rural Ontario Institute told The Observer how the program picks each class based on bringing together people from all sectors of agriculture and agribusiness.
'Each person who comes in is expected to donate something, with skills and knowledge that they can share with others, and to receive skills and knowledge that they need,' said Ferguson.
That sharing of perspectives is the basis on which the program is set.
'We layer on top of that self-awareness, building a strong team, negotiation, trade policy, governance. We take them to seven seminars around the province of Ontario.... They have a leadership workshop and do site tours to innovative farms, businesses and rural economic development sites. And then we go on a North American study tour... and they also go internationally,' he explained.
Ferguson notes that those taking the course gain networking opportunities. AALP gives participants access to 40 years of alumni who are always willing to help.
'You can always call up any alumni, and always have this connection. You can always call, not just your class, but especially your classmates, and be like, 'Hey, I have a question about this. Can you answer it for me?'
'I think it's crazy how unique that is, that you just have that immediate bond with other people who have taken AALP too.'
For her part, Arts says she knows people are busy and may think they don't have time for a program like AALP, but argues the experience is well worth the effort.
'If you're thinking about it, just do it. You will not regret it. I've not heard an AALP graduate say 'I should never have taken this course.' I've always heard that 'I should have done it sooner.''

Ultra-Rare BMW 507 For Sale With Eye-Popping Pricetag

You can never go wrong with a vintage BMW. The German automaker's classic examples have a special way of combining slim bodylines and a svelte silhouette with sheer, menacing performance under the hood. This 1959 BMW 5078 Series II on Bring a Trailer is a perfect example of what I mean. When US importer Max Hoffman suggested that BMW design as mid-level sports car for the North American market, BMW replied with the 507. Featuring hand-built aluminum bodywork styled by Albrecht von Goertz, the 507 debuted in 1955 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City before entering production in late 1956. In 1957, the Series II debuted with a smaller fuel tank relocated from behind the seats to inside the trunk to prevent fumes from entering the cabin. This particular example, Chassis 70185, is one of only 252 built during the model's three years of production and was completed on October 6, 1958 as a Feather White car before being delivered new on October 31, 1958, to Autohaus H. Bäte KG in Hannover, Germany. The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment around 2012 that included a repaint in its current shade of Coral Red and a refinishing of its hardtop in an ivory color. The 507 was then acquired in 2022 by German specialists Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors, who re-trimmed the interior in tan leather. What sets this particular BMW 507 apart from others is its ivory hardtop that can be installed when the beige convertible top is not in use. Hardtops were optional equipment at the time and were hand-built to fit each car's hand-built bodywork, making them particularly rare and special accessories to own. Under the hood is a 3,168cc V8 with an aluminum block and cylinder heads as well as twin Zenith carburetors mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This 507 sits on 16" Rudge wheels wrapped in 6.00-16 Michelin Pilote X tires with Dunlop front disc and rear drum brakes behind them. The cabin still wears its tan leather and sports a contrasting ivory steering wheel and shift knob alongside a Becker Mexico radio. The odometer shows around 33,000 kilometers (~21,000 miles), with 25 of those being added by the current owner. The auction ends in 9 days with a current bid of $1,000,000, so it's unlikely that you and I will be able to afford such a beauty. Considering that it was purchased from a collection by its current owner in January 2025 and they only added 25 miles since, this poor thing suffers from a severe lack of being driven. This isn't an uncommon occurence with cars of this rarity and value, but it's also not an excuse. I won't go on a tangent about why driving your cars is the right thing to do, but I sure hope that the new owner feels the same way. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Featured pricing is subject to change. Long live 2005. A Day To Remember and Yellowcard just announced they're striking out on the nationwide 'Maximum Fun Tour' from September through November this year. While on the road, the anti-establishment co-headliners have two shows scheduled in New York and New Jersey. First up, they hit Syracuse, NY's Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheatre on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Then, the pair is scheduled to melt faces at Camden, NJ's Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Thursday, Sept. 11. On select dates, the raucous duo will be joined by special guests State Champs, The Wonder Years, Boundaries and Dinosaur Pile-Up. This run comes on the heels of the release of A Day To Remember's eighth studio album 'Big Ole Album Vol. 1,' which hit shelves earlier this year. As for Yellowcard, their first record in a decade, the Travis Barker-produced 'Better Days' allegedly drops Oct. 10. In addition to the tour and new output, both acts also have Vans Warped Tour dates lined up this summer and fall. Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming A Day To Remember shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale for the 'Maximum Fun Tour' is Friday, June 6. Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand. They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event. Vans Warped Tour On top of the co-headlining jaunt, both ADTR and Yellowcard will take part in the recently-resurrected Vans Warped Tour. If you want to be there, here's where the action is going down at the three-part festival these next few months. 'Ocean Avenue' A Day To Remember new music Just a few months ahead of the tour announcement, A Day To Remember unveiled their eighth studio album 'Big Ole Album Vol. 1.' As always, the group oscillates between melodic pop, angsty punk and full-on metal, which creates a sense of whiplash while listening. There's little room to breathe but that's not necessary when a record is as much of a shot of adrenaline as 'Big Ole Album Vol. 1' is. Highlights here include the fist-pumping rocker 'Feedback,' melodic country-esque ode to buddies 'All My Friends' and invigorating 'LeBron.' All that being said, others may have a totally different interpretation of the record depending on taste. Our favorites here lean punk- some listeners may prefer the heavy metal. ADTR really caters to totally different audiences and that's part of what makes them so special. Want to give the album a spin? Click here to rock out to 'Big Ole Album Vol. 1.' Yellowcard new music Ahead of the release of 'Better Days,' Yellowcard has dropped a pair of hard-charging singles. The title track 'Better Days' kicks things off with a bit of feedback before launching into the group's anthemic sound — soaring vocals and rockin' guitar — and hit overdrive. It's a delight. Up next, 'honestly i' is a bit more unconventional with its shaky accordian-like sound off the top. Speedy percussions steady the operation and by a minute in, the song returns to classic Yellowcard territory. To hear for yourself, you can find both tracks here. 'Maximum Fun Tour' special guests In the off chance you need to brush up on the opening acts' respective sounds, here's each artist's most-streamed song on Spotify. State Champs: 'Secrets' The Wonder Years: 'Came Out Swinging' Boundaries: 'Easily Erased' Dinosaur Pile-Up: 'Back Foot' Huge acts on tour in 2025 Need more genre-bending punk and metal in your life?
