Editor Sifiso Mahlangu wasted no time in announcing Helen Zille's age and race in his opinion piece, 'In the DA, upward mobility is conditional' (The Star, June 17).
This smacks of ageism, racism and selectivity. He forgot to mention Zille's struggle credentials and her sterling work on the anti-apartheid newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail, under the stewardship of the late Allister Sparks.
Mahlangu also seems to have forgotten that black DA (Democratic Alliance) candidates have been given the chance at the mayoral seat. One male DA mayor left for reasons of his own, while one young female medical doctor, Mpho Phalatse, was hounded out of office before she could even prove herself.
After Phalatse, we saw some incompetents warming the mayoral seat, one or two with dubious credentials. Under their watch, Johannesburg, the so-called World-Class African City, has been reduced to a slum, with crime and corruption rampant.
No doubt Zille is a polarizing and abrasive figure, but if she can kick butt and restore this city to its pristine place among South Africa's metros, why not give her the chance to do so?
To single out Zille's age and race is mischievous. Progressive Western nations do not have a mandatory (compulsory) retirement age as we do.
Some of our competent, NRF-rated academics, for example, are forced to retire at age 65 and are expected to play with their grandkids or fill in crossword puzzles!
As for Helen Zille being white, I thought we were a non-racial society?

Johannesburg deserves better,' the DA said. Zungu is also an ANC councillor. According to the DA, Mthembu of ActionSA has failed to uphold her constitutional role as an impartial guardian of council processes. 'Instead of ensuring fair and robust oversight, she has consistently shielded the mayor, undermining council's ability to hold the executive accountable,' added the party. It also accuses Mthembu of being bias and stifling critical decision-making, suppressing legitimate scrutiny and eroding the democratic integrity of the council chamber. The DA said her actions were evident in her protection of ineffective officials and disregard for procedural fairness, which it believes demonstrate that she is no longer independent but Morero's political ally. The party urged all councillors, irrespective of political affiliation, to support its motions and join it in fighting for a city that works for all its people. Morero and Mthembu, the DA said, have turned council into a political playground while residents suffer the consequences of poor governance. 'The DA will not stand by while Johannesburg is hijacked by narrow political interests. We owe it to every resident to fight for a council that works, a mayor who leads and a speaker who upholds the rules with fairness and impartiality,' the party explained. The ANC leads the government of local unity in the Joburg council with ActionSA, the EFF, Patriotic Alliance, IFP, African Independent Congress, Al Jama-ah and the PAC, among others. In January, ActionSA councillor Sarah Wissler was elected chairperson of section 79 public safety committee, beating the DA's Solomon Maila by 169 votes to 67.

KZN government to establish a beef production enterprise for King Misuzulu's financial needs

Image: Independent Newspapers Archives KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers is in the process of establishing a beef production enterprise which will help the Zulu royal family to be financially independent and save the province more than R60 million which is annually allocated to King Misizulu kaZwelithini and the family. This was revealed by the Democratic Alliance chief whip in the provincial legislature Dr Imran Keeka on Thursday. The party was reflecting on its first anniversary of the Government of Provincial Unity, particularly its role and achievements. The party said one of its achievements is that it has strengthened relations with the AmaZulu Royal Household and its Finance MEC is working on a beef production enterprise to ensure the monarchy's fiscal independence. 'The Treasury under Rodgers is working on establishing a beef production enterprise to ensure the monarchy's fiscal independence,' said Keeka. If Rogers succeeds, he will achieve what has been elusive since 1994. There had been talk of creating a Royal Household Trust which previous provincial government administrations had described as the vehicle that was going to sustain the Zulu royal family financially and end its financial dependence on taxpayers who fund the king and the royal family's financial needs. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Reacting to the announcement, the Zulu royal family's spokesperson Prince Thulani Zulu said the family will comment after the MEC has officially informed his Majesty, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini about the details of the enterprise. Another major achievement listed was Rogers' ability to devise a cost-cutting strategy which has reduced the provincial government's projected over-expenditure from R10 billion to R800 million. The plan is now being implemented. The party described its participation in the GPU as a year of positive change for the people of the province, 'who now have a government focused on placing their needs first and realising the province's true potential'. It said the move from a single majority party government to a partnership consisting of KZN's four leading political parties has not been without its challenges, however, there have been notable successes. The party said its participation in the GPU has allowed it to play a key part in critical decision-making that affects the people of the province. These roles include heading KZN Finance Rodgers, Public Works and Infrastructure which is under MEC Martin Meyer, deputy Speaker through Mmabatho Tembe as well as chairing important portfolio committees such as Health, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and provincial SCOPA( Standing Committee on Public Accounts).

Shivambu says he was removed as MK Party G-S based on a 'rubbish' intelligence report
Floyd Shivambu says he was axed as the MK Party's secretary-general on the basis of a questionable 'intelligence report' that suggested he was working secretly to take over the party. Another 'intelligence report' was used to block him from being redeployed to parliament after his removal as the party's secretary-general. Shivambu on Thursday came out guns blazing, dismissing the alleged report used to axe him as 'false and utter lies'. This is despite the party declaring no member should speak about his demotion when the decision was taken two weeks ago. Shivambu was demoted after the controversy surrounding his trip to visit fugitive 'prophet' Sheperd Bushiri in Malawi. The MK Party's national leadership said the move was in transgression of their constitution under 'offences', which stipulates: 'Undertaking international trips and participating in activities and programmes that are opposed to the agenda of the MK Party or an allied party.' But, Shivambu has come out to denounce those reasons, claiming he was falsely accused by 'political scoundrels' who surround party leader Jacob Zuma. 'There has been bizarre and fake intelligence reports which were produced, which was deemed to be a conversation between me and some people in the African continent, where is is alleged that despite raising money to remove president Zuma I'm also accumulating supernatural powers to make people disappear. 'I object [to] this with contempt and say it is rubbish. There is a principle which I uphold, that there's nothing I do privately that I cannot own up [to] publicly.' Shivambu said he was also rumoured to conspire to use his demotion to parliament as a way to claw back the party from under Zuma's nose. 'In a subsequent meeting, another fake report was presented, which seems to draft up conversations between me and someone else. I'm reported to be saying I'm going to use parliament now to take over the party and I've got money from Stellenbosch, who are going to take over the party through parliament, where we're going to take power.' Shivambu insisted these lies led to his letter of expulsion drafted and placed in Zuma's briefcase, who he believes is waiting for any opportune moment to show him the door. However, he said he will not resign from the party but will maintain his membership as [per] the constitution, which he played a critical role in drafting. Previously, Zuma used the same constitution to justify to his members why he has not left the ANC after his move to start his own breakaway party. He said he does not care whether his announcement of a series of consultations will mean the end of the road for him in the MK Party. 'If the MK Party believes a listening session is reason enough to terminate my membership, then so be it. I left the ANC when it had a 63% majority, I was not expelled, I was suspended and I still left. Why would I be perturbed by being expelled by the MK Party that does not have power?' Shivambu said he will announce an interim leadership collective next week which will embark on this project with him to assess whether to establish a new party.
