HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk makes Billboard's Power 100 list amid controversy

Muscat Daily29-01-2025
Seoul, South Korea – Bang Si-hyuk, founder and chairman of K-pop powerhouse HYBE, home to global superstars BTS, has been named in Billboard's prestigious 'Power 100 List' for 2025, marking his fifth appearance among the industry's top executives. However, his recognition comes amid growing controversy involving HYBE and its subsidiary, ADOR.
Billboard released its annual ranking on Monday (U.S. local time), placing Bang and Scooter Braun, CEO of HYBE America, at No. 17 in the 'Leaderboard' category, which spotlights the top 40 figures shaping the music industry. Bang had previously made the list in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
HYBE has been under scrutiny following allegations from Min Hee-jin, CEO of ADOR, the label behind the popular girl group 'NewJeans'. Min accused Bang and HYBE of excessive interference in the group's creative direction, suggesting that the company was exerting undue control over ADOR's artistic decisions. The dispute has sparked heated discussions within the K-pop industry, with fans expressing concerns about creative autonomy in idol management.
Further fueling controversy, Bang was recently spotted in Los Angeles with an adult content broadcaster, raising speculation about his activities and personal conduct. While HYBE has not commented on these reports, the incidents have drawn significant attention online.
Despite the ongoing turmoil, HYBE continues its global expansion. Billboard highlighted the company's joint venture with Geffen Records, which led to the debut of the girl group KATSEYE. Their debut EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong) , achieved 115,000 U.S. equivalent album units in 2024, with 97 million on-demand streams.
Meanwhile, Braun emphasised HYBE's growing Weverse platform, which hosted over 100 online concerts, sold 18 million merchandise items, and released 18 Weverse albums, amassing 5.7 million units in sales. With artists such as Kid LAROI, Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, and Dua Lipa joining the platform, HYBE aims for further expansion in 2025.
Adding to the industry shake-up, Joseph Chang, co-CEO of Kakao Entertainment, ranked No. 15 in the 'Multisector' category. Billboard recognised Kakao Entertainment's work on the BBC series Made in Korea: The K-pop Experience , which followed five British trainees undergoing K-pop training in South Korea.
While Bang Si-hyuk's position in the global music industry remains strong, the controversies surrounding HYBE and his personal conduct continue to generate debate among industry insiders and fans alike.

Dolly Parton named Guinness World Records icon

US country star Dolly Parton has been named a Guinness World Records icon for holding 11 record-breaking titles. As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the company - which lists world record achievements - has honoured the "Jolene" singer, 79, with an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the EGOT — an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony — aka the "Grand Slam of showbusiness." Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records, said: "Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extend far beyond the musical world. "There are so many projects close to her heart — poverty relief, education, medical research, and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign — and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propel Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her." Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Drake, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. Parton, who is from Tennessee, released her debut album, "Hello, I'm Dolly," in 1967 and had a string of hits in the 1970s. By the 1980s, she was a huge star and made her movie debut in the screwball comedy "9 to 5." Her most recent album was "Rockstar," released in 2023, and she recently featured in a version of Sabrina Carpenter's "Please Please Please." She is also the co-owner of the Dollywood Company, which operates Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. —PA Media/dpa

Seoul- Over the years K-pop fans have always come to expect the unexpected yet despite all that experience they never would've guessed this unique crossover between deceased pop royalty Michael Jackson and worldwide superstars BTS to appear so soon this year. According to a report written by the Irish Sun, BTS worked with Grouse Lodge Studios in an attempt to provide strong vocals to some unreleased songs originally written for Michael Jackson to sing. Michael Jackson was expected to sing these songs and release under the album titled- The Next Thriller back in the summer days of 2006. Now, these unreleased songs have been given a new lease of life because of BTS and other pop powerhouses such as producer Rodney Jerkins and rapper Nephew. Announcements were made throughout the entire recording process from BTS members themselves, stirring up commotion between ARMY members (BTS fans) and Moonwalkers (Michael Jackson fans) alike. Many fans left excited comments on X about The Next Thriller project, praising BTS for taking on such a daunting task of following up on the singer's legendary legacy with this special tribute. Thanks to their brilliant efforts, these unpublished songs now have a chance to be heard and resonate with fans all across the world because of BTS's influences the world's biggest boy-band we have so far. Some fans also cheekily point out – in hindsight, this once-in-a lifetime collaboration wasn't so rare or surprising for BTS at all. After these announcements went viral online, fans uncovered and released snippets of the members' interviews in the new Michael Jackson's Thriller 40 documentary. In them, they talk about the popstar's impact on the social themes of their songs and their dance choreography. Fans also found clips of BTS members Jimin and Jungkook singing Black or White during their FESTA celebrations back in 2018. Their not-so subtle respect and adoration for Michael Jackson managed to reach his son Prince Jackson who had this to say- 'The way they pay respect and homage to my father's honour and legacy. It's really gratifying and really heartwarming to see that they have that much love and respect for him.' With this recent announcement, alongside the scheduled tour and album they plan on releasing very soon, it's safe to say – BTS fans, things are looking up this year.

"Saiyaara" smashes records as the first Hindi song to top Global Billboard Charts

Los Angeles- Bollywood's newest blockbuster— 'Saiyaara' makes history with its title track as the first Hindi song to debut at the Top 10 songs on The Global Excluding United States Billboard charts. The title track which goes by the same name of the movie was composed by Tanishk Bagchi and Arslan Nizami and was sung by Faheem Abdullah. As they react to the shocking global success of this song throughout these past few weeks, he tells fans— 'There is no collaboration with foreign artists; everyone associated with us home-grown (from India itself), so that's a big achievement for me. I did have an intuition that this could go viral, but I never expected it to top global charts.' But whether the song's creators or its listeners fully anticipated the sudden popularity of the song or not, the story of its virality still plays on. After debuting as the first Hindi song to hit the number one spot in Spotify's Global 50 chart, 'Saiyaara' crawled its way to the Global Top 200 charts. Jumping from the 174th position to 4th place in the overall rankings by the beginning of August after a relatively short period of time from the film's initial release, it managed to beat hit songs such as Justin Beiber's Daisies which dominated the global charts after his album's release this month and long-time chart toppers such as APT by Rose and Bruno Mars which need no further introduction at this point. Barely missing the top-spot to songs like 'Ordinary' by Alex Warren, 'Jump' by Blackpink and 'Golden' from the animated movie— K-pop Demon Hunters, this rock-ballad continues to grow viral as more than 4.9 million users around the world continue to stream it to this day. Congratulations to the singers, lyricists and composers are well overdue. Let's hope that this song continues to reach its intended listeners like how this song reaches Aneet Padda in the film.
