The heart of the festival, of course, is film.
The week kicks off with a pre-festival screening on June 24 of NFF's centerpiece film, '
The documentary celebrates the film's cultural impact with never-before-seen footage from director Steven Spielberg. It'll be followed by a panel discussion of the film's effects on the industry and the public's perception of sharks.
Then on the festival's official first day, NFF has two films lined up.
There's the documentary '
from 2017 to 2023 as she navigates national crises and motherhood.
For those interested in a more narrative film, there's '

Basil Tsiokos, NFF's senior programmer, said figuring out an opener for a festival can be challenging because it's about getting a sense of what audiences want to see while considering the tone being set for the rest of the festival.
'I think that's one of the reasons why we did two films for opening night, is to kind of capture the complexity of a festival that celebrates not only screenwriting fictional, but also storytelling in the sort of documentary sense,' Tsiokos said. 'So, both of those films are incredibly strong and so we thought it was a great way to kick things off.'

Outside of the documentaries and features, Anita Raswant, NFF's lead programmer, highlighted the shorts programming as a great selection that allows audiences to take in strong stories in shorter segments.

With so many offerings, the NFF team emphasized festivalgoers' ability to personalize their experiences, so they can get the most out of their trips to Nantucket and enjoy the festival community.
'It is important to gather people together to watch film,' Tsiokos said. 'Films open up the world to audiences and, yes, you can get access to films down the line, on streamers and on whatever, which is great, and that's part of the ecosystem as well, but there's something to be said for being in person.'

Pete Davidson seems to be moving himself comfortable within the horror genre, and I'm all here for it. The comedian rose to fame as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and has since ventured into not-as-comedic roles, and is particularly drawn to the horror genre. After his small part in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Davidson will soon be seen starring in The Home, a new film from the creator of The Purge. franchise, James DeMonaco, who revealed he actually wants Davidson to join the horror franchise, and there's technically precedence for it. In a recent interview on The Julia Cunningham Show, franchise writer/director James DeMonaco opened up about directing his new film, The Home, as well as the enduring popularity of his Purge franchise. The filmmaker helmed the first three Purge movies, and will be responsible for writing the upcoming sixth Purge film. Apparently, he's even hoping to include his latest lead in the future project somehow, after the SNL alum expressed his own interest in the franchise over the years. DeMonaco revealed that Davidson's inclusion in The Home came from trying to get him in a Purge movie. He said: Yeah. Well, I did pitch him The Home. We were trying to get him in The Purge though. That's funny you said that, Julia. We always wanted to kill him in The Purge. He would call me every Purge movie and say, 'Please kill me in this one. I want to die in the new Purge film.' Hopefully this mutual interest leads to Davidson joining the franchise in whatever capacity possible. The comedian seems to have an interest dying on the big screen, considering his demise met in The Suicide Squad, and early death in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. If he does die in Purge 6 however, I'm hoping he lasts longer in the runtime. He's a fascinating figure to watch on screen, infusing his sarcastic sense of humor into his characters. He'd be such a fun addition to the franchise, though I'd love to see his character play things out a little longer than just a quick pre-bludgeoning cameo. For DeMonaco, The Home is yet another interesting insert in his filmography. The movie follows Max, played by Davidson, who while working at a retirement home realizes the residents may be concealing horrifying secrets. It's an unconventional setting for a horror movie, with an unconventional star at the center. However, DeMonaco has always seemed to have an interest in exploring unorthodox concepts in horror movies, so this feels like a strong expansion for his filmography. While fans may be looking towards another Purge film, hopefully they find something just as interesting and sinister in The Home that gets them to the movie theater. Whether he ends up joining the Purge franchise or just sticks to this one DeMonaco collaboration, I'm loving this new phase in Davidson's career. Usually after starring on SNL, actors tend to go the straight comedy route, releasing hilarious films like Happy Gilmore, Anchorman, and Bridesmaids. While we absolutely adore these movies, I love when comedy stars try their hands at something different, and Davidson feels right at home in the horror genre. The Home has yet to be released, but he has already gotten creative with his choices, and I can't wait to see what doors this opens for the actor, especially if this means joining The Purge franchise. Brooklyn, N.Y. A hundred years ago or thereabouts, when I was a college art student, the undergraduates over at the cinema school hosted an annual showing of something called 'The Goody Reel.' That montage of clips of everything from forgotten B-movies to student-film outtakes was a festival of collegiate wit: a track-level shot of a train passing overhead, the screen going black, and the sound of a toilet flushing; a mouse being dangled over a meat grinder, a cut to a crank being turned, hamburger meat coming out, all to the tune of the theme song from 'The Mickey Mouse Club.' But it was actually nothing more than an absurdist anthology of the way movies themselves work: Shot A (say, a stagecoach proceeding at a gallop) followed by Shot B (bandits hiding behind rocks, putting on their masks) creates the expectation of Shot C (a holdup). We viewers fill in the blanks.

McCandless takes center stage for "How To Rob a Bank" film shoot
A movie crew took over part of the North Hills on Monday. Residents may have seen crew members in McCandless as part of the "How To Rob a Bank" film shoot, which has been taking place throughout the Pittsburgh region in recent weeks. Monday's shoot took the crew to SSB Bank along Perry Highway. The Amazon MGM Studios flick is the latest feature film from director David Leitch, who has directed "Deadpool 2," "Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw," and "Bullet Train," among others. His latest film's cast will feature Pete Davidson, Zoë Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Sawai and Rhenzy Feliz. Co-stars Hoult and Sawai even took part in Sunday's festivities at PNC Park, with Hoult throwing out the first pitch before the Pirates' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Production began in the Pittsburgh area in mid-June and is scheduled to run through August. The movie is set to release in September 2026, according to Movie Casting PGH.
