Could this player be the biggest Springbok surprise of 2025?
When many Springbok fans were making predictions about the possible make up of the squad for 2025, not many predicted the call up of former Cheetahs hooker Marnus van der Merwe.
However, as the Springbok coaches considered who could add much-needed depth at hooker, they simply could not ignore the consistently impactful performances of Van der Merwe for Welsh club Scarlets.
The 28-year-old, who was a member of the Junior Springbok training squad in 2017, will now feature off the bench against the Barbarians this Saturday, realising a dream that he didn't think would come into reality so quickly.
'I didn't think it would happen this fast,' said Van der Merwe. 'I thought it would probably take another year or so, so hopefully I can grab the opportunity with both hands.
'I told my wife when we went over to Wales that I have a two-year plan to work my way into the Bok set-up, and if it doesn't happen, we'll make another plan. Obviously being here now means that we've had to move everything forward.'
By all accounts, Van der Merwe boasts all the qualities that could see him enjoy the most unexpected breakthrough season for the Springboks, while providing much-needed back up cover and competition to Bongi Mbonambi and Malcolm Marx.
Looking ahead to making his first appearance for the Springboks against a quality Barbarians outfit, Van der Merwe said he's approaching it as a Test match.
'I want to go out there and give everything, just as I do every week for my club,' he said. 'One thing's for certain, it's tough to get here and even harder to stay here, so I plan to give my best.'
Commenting on what has stood out for him in the Springbok team, he said: 'It's the way the team does things and the structure within the system. The way Tony (Brown) and Jerry (Flannery – Springbok assistant coaches) see the game has also taught me a lot about how to improve my rugby, and it's fantastic how every coach gives input in their areas of expertise.

A new general for Chiefs: ‘Gerrard-like' signing arrives in SA
Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly welcomed English-based creative midfielder Ethan Chislett to Naturena. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder was born in Durban but spent most of his life in England. His father, Donovan, had a career in the Premier Soccer League in the 70s and 80s. According to FARPost , Chislett landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday and was greeted by Amakhosi staff. This week, it was reported that he had signed a two-year deal with the option to extend with the Soweto giants. Chislett is regarded as a talented player, capable of playing as a number 10, number 8, or as a wide midfielder, similar to former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The 26-year-old spent the last two years with English club Port Vale where he made 68 appearances and scored 13 goals. His move to Chiefs comes at the right time where the club is seeking a creative player. His father, Donovan, told FARPost that his son was eyeing the potential of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'Now with the 2026 [FIFA] World Cup coming up and the potential opportunities in South Africa, it seems like almost the perfect time,' he said. 'I'm looking for a fresh opportunity. I think my heart and mind are aligned, and they're set to South Africa, if possible,' Chislett said. Kaizer Chiefs will travel to the Netherlands next month to play several high-profile friendlies. Although the club has not announced any new players, five players have departed. Kaizer Chiefs need roughly R70 million to sort out their problems
Kaizer Chiefs have experienced several underwhelming seasons, but a budget of R70 million could change their fortunes for the new season. Amakhosi finished ninth in the Betway Premiership, accumulating just 32 points in 28 league matches. Despite a disappointing season, the team did not go empty-handed; they ended their 10-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup. With the team scheduled to travel to the Netherlands, head coach Nasreddine Nabi will need to enhance his squad's quality to avoid finishing outside the top eight once again. The team requires a quality goalkeeper, a left-back, a creative midfielder, and a top striker. While their defence has been lacking, much of the issue can be attributed to the absence of quality midfielders and a solid goalkeeper. If Chiefs can secure a top defensive midfielder and an exceptional keeper, they will likely concede fewer goals. In terms of attacking options, the midfield has often struggled to provide the creative spark necessary to break down tight defences. A creative midfielder is essential; although Gaston Sirino can play as a playmaker, he has passed his prime and lacks the necessary consistency. With Ranga Chivaviro gone, Amakhosi must invest millions in securing a top striker. The current options, including Tashreeq Morris and Ashley Du Preez, are not clinical enough in front of goals. In terms of getting a creative midfielder, top strikers, Kaizer Chiefs should budget R30 million roughly. No quality player will come cheap. 'I've been trying to get Peter to play for the Barbarians for a while, it worked out for him now,' Deans said. 'He has this last opportunity before retiring from international rugby. He has a huge amount of respect globally. 'He seemed like the obvious appointment (as captain) and was the first bloke I spoke to once I was offered the gig, and he was keen.
