'We believe that organizations prosper when wellness is a central focus - for customers, employees, and across operations.' — Tracey Abell, ACHS President
PORTLAND, OR, UNITED STATES, March 14, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- American College of Healthcare Sciences (ACHS) proudly participated in the Portland People and Planet First Showcase, an event celebrating organizations that prioritize people, the planet, and purpose over profit. ACHS joined fellow B Corps and People and Planet First Verified businesses in a night of community and collaboration to promote purchasing with impact. The Showcase was hosted by The Impact Collective, People and Planet First, and Place to B.
As a Catalyst Sponsor of the Portland Impact Purchasing Pilot Program, ACHS was proud to join SAP, Port of Portland, and Prosper Portland, among others in showing our support for impact purchasing. This pilot brought together organizations committed to shared values that focus on social impact, environmental responsibility, and local economic support. Growing consumer demand for ethically sourced products and sustainable business models is fueling the rise in social enterprises, making sustainable products and partnerships more accessible.
The Portland People and Planet First Showcase provided an opportunity to learn about businesses in the community committed to local, sustainable purchasing and investing in social enterprises. ACHS's Dean of Aromatherapy Amanda Lattin, Director of Partnerships Tiff Darwich, and President Tracey Abell took the opportunity to share how organizations can bring wellness to their workforce, bridging the connection between business sustainability and employee well-being.
'The Portland People and Planet First Showcase was an inspiring event that brought together businesses with shared values who are truly committed to making a difference through their products and services. We believe that organizations prosper when wellness is a central focus - from operations that consider the people they service to employee wellness programs, and purchasing with impact in mind,' shared Tracey Abell.

JARI chief, at her final Showcase for Commerce before retiring, says expo has 'created jobs and economic viability'

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Johnstown Area Regional Industries President and CEO Linda Thomson has long been synonymous with Showcase for Commerce. She has helped shape the business and defense contracting exposition's identity since joining JARI in July 2000. Billions of dollars of production and investment have been made in the local economy thanks in part to her efforts. Now Thomson's time with JARI and Showcase for Commerce is coming to an end. She plans to retire this summer. This year's 34th annual Showcase for Commerce is scheduled to conclude Friday with the John P. Murtha Breakfast, press conference, public exhibition inside 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, and luncheon. 'It's just been something that I've really enjoyed, even though it's a lot of work and effort,' Thomson said. 'I think it's something that we can all be proud of and something that, as a region, we've really become known for excellence in this defense industrial base area.' Showcase was the vision of U.S. Rep. John Murtha, the longest-serving congressman in Pennsylvania history. The event has brought businesses to the Johnstown region, developed the local defense contracting industry and provided networking opportunities. Thomson's first Showcase was in 2001. Murtha died in February 2010. 'Linda and I both realized that we needed to transform the Showcase to keep it relevant and to keep that value that had been created by Mr. Murtha,' Showcase for Commerce Chairman Ed Sheehan Jr. said. 'She and I were very devoted to that cause.' Sheehan is the president and CEO of Concurrent Technologies Corp., one of the defense contractors that have benefited from Showcase over its more than three decades. Sheehan said he and Thomson 'both recognized how important the Showcase was and what it meant to the region, but also what it meant to the defense industrial base and our national security.' A video tribute to Thomson was presented during the Government Acquisition Leaders Briefings and Panel Discussions Thursday. Comments were given by numerous people, including former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr., former U.S. Rep. Mark Critz, current U.S. Reps. Glenn 'GT' Thompson and Dr. John Joyce, and Murtha's widow, Joyce Murtha. Thompson also spoke about Thomson during his keynote address inside the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center. 'Linda, let me summarize things up this way, we love you,' Thompson said. 'Thank you for all that you've done to make Showcase such a great success and a great model. It's pretty easy to brag about this three-day event in Washington with my colleagues from all across the country.' Showcase is put on by JARI and the Cambria Regional Chamber. Many local businesses, international companies, elected officials, colleges and representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense have also participated. 'It has just been such a pleasure and honor to work for all these years with people who are so committed to our region and to our economy,' Thomson said. When looking back at Showcase's impact, Thomson said, 'The bottom line is it's grown our economy, it's diversified our economy and it's helped bring dollars flowing into us, into our area. That has created jobs and economic viability. That's certainly the bottom line.' Cambria Regional Chamber President and CEO Amy Bradley credited Thomson for her role in that success. 'Linda is great at what she does,' Bradley said. 'She is a great convener of people and a great organizer. She's well-known and she's well-liked. I think for a lot of people she is synonymous with Showcase for Commerce.' Bradley praised Thomson: 'I've seen her really work to transform lives.'

Two U.S. reps to headline speaker slate at Johnstown's Showcase for Commerce defense, business expo

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Two congressmen will headline the list of participants in the 34th annual Showcase for Commerce business and defense contracting exposition this upcoming week in Johnstown. Chief Deputy Whip U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Washington, whose 14th Congressional District includes Somerset County, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address during the John P. Murtha Breakfast Friday. House Committee on Agriculture Chairman U.S. Rep. Glenn 'G.T.' Thompson, R-Centre, will address the Government Acquisition Leaders Briefings Thursday. Both events are set to take place inside the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown. 'We have a couple really good keynote addresses planned,' said Linda Thomson, president and CEO of Johnstown Area Regional Industries, which co-hosts Showcase for Commerce with the Cambria Regional Chamber. The U.S. Department of Defense's usual presence will be missing from Showcase. 'We have really relied on industry speakers this year because a lot of the government personnel that we would normally invite are not able to travel,' Showcase for Commerce Chairman Ed Sheehan Jr. said. 'They have travel restrictions in place right now that preclude them from attending these kinds of events, and so we've relied heavily on industry. 'It should be very interesting and more of an industry perspective on things like advanced manufacturing and machine learning and artificial intelligence, an industry perspective on cybersecurity and then also workforce development.' This will be the first Showcase without former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. since he started serving as the event's congressional sponsor in 2013. The Democrat is no longer in the Senate, having lost last year to then-challenger and now-U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa. Neither McCormick nor U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is expected to attend Showcase this year, but both have offered 'a lot of support,' according to Thomson. A highlight of the event will once again be the opening reception from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday inside 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial downtown. 'The thing we're really excited about this year is that we are sold out as far as the booths (for the opening reception) and we have 13 new participants this year that are having booths, so we feel really good about that,' Cambria Regional Chamber President and CEO Amy Bradley said. 'I think the Showcase continues to evolve, and it's just nice to see new booths wanting to participate and to have such good turnout.' Showcase will begin Wednesday with networking activities, including a golf outing and receptions. Supplier briefings and the government contracting series are scheduled for Thursday. The expo will conclude Friday with a press conference and public exhibition.

Northwell Health Commits $1.3M to Fund Employee

NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Three employee-led projects at Northwell Health, New York's largest health system, have been awarded a total of $1.3 million in funding as part of its 2025 Innovation Challenge. The funding will support the development of innovative approaches to care delivery and scientific advancement aiming to transform the future of health care. The announcement was made during the health system's Made for Big Ideas™ Showcase on May 1. Lead investigators of the three winning projects included: Phillip Connell, MD, Northwell Obstetrics and Gynecology gynecologic surgery fellow, for his work on a new technology platform that connects operating room monitors, a wireless camera and extended reality (XR) glasses for streaming of high quality, low latency video; Eric Gantwerker, MD, pediatric otolaryngologist at Northwell Health's Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, for his work on an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled detection program that can help diagnose pediatric sleep apnea based on sound recordings from home devices; Matthew Barish, MD, vice-chair of the Imaging Service Line, CMIO, for his work on an all-in-one radiology platform for AI insights, clinician feedback and continuous diagnostic improvement. 'At Northwell, we're proud to cultivate a culture that empowers our team members — no matter what department you work in – to promote innovative and new ways of thinking to improve how we deliver care,' said Michael Dowling, Northwell president and CEO. 'These submissions showcase our team's most unique approaches for addressing major health care challenges.' Hundreds of Northwell employees have submitted ideas to the competition since it launched in 2017. To date, the health system has awarded funding for 15 projects to help advance their projects and develop their inventions. After a rigorous screening process, six finalist teams are chosen to present their pitches in person to an esteemed panel of judges. This year's judges included: Bunny Ellerin, digital health expert and entrepreneur Jessica Federer, board member of Angelini Ventures Sunny Kumar, MD, partner at Informed Ventures Russ Richmond, MD, CEO and co-founder of Laudio 'At Northwell, our team members are our greatest asset, and we believe that the best ideas often come from the people closest to the work,' said Jason Naidich, MD, senior vice president and chief innovation officer at Northwell. 'This competition is a testament to Northwell's dedication to creating the future of healthcare and its unwavering support for the visionaries who lead the way.' This year's winners include: A new technology platform for the operating room Presented by Dr. Connell and Johnny Zhang, specialist with the Biomedical Design Center for Learning Innovation, this invention combines a camera and XR glasses with existing operating room equipment, including monitors, cameras and lighting, to stream high-quality, low-latency video. The result is a portable, immersive experience offering real-time, AI-enhanced surgical assistance, including live remote expert consultations. This technology promises to transform laparoscopic surgery and expand access to minimally invasive procedures. 'This platform is going to start by increasing access to minimally invasive techniques locally and nationally,' said Dr. Connell. 'But it will also build into a platform that helps surgeons improve their efficacy and improve patient safety by not being inhibited by all the wires and bulky systems that currently surround the patient.' Other team members include: Michael Nimaroff, MD, MBA, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell OB/GYN and chair OB/GYN at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center; and Allison Neuwirth, project manager with the Biomedical Design of Center for Learning Innovation. AI-enabled detection of pediatric sleep apnea Presented by Dr. Gantwerker and Patrick Scheffler, MD, assistant professor otolaryngology at Northwell, this program helps collect data from home devices and applies it to AI-enabled analysis that can help diagnose pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, especially for families who cannot access sleep centers for studies. 'We're so excited for this funding so it can go directly into creating this application and make a big difference in pediatric sleep apnea care,' said Dr. Gantwerker. 'The goal is to expand access of sleep studies, especially for those who currently lack it, significantly improving patient outcomes.' An all-in-one radiology platform Presented by Dr. Barish and James Thannickal, this new program streamlines radiology workflows by seamlessly integrating and assessing various AI tools. This allows radiologists to efficiently review and incorporate AI-generated insights, leading to faster, more accurate diagnoses and improved patient care. 'Patient care can suffer when mistakes and different AI tools get in the way of clinical care,' said Thannickal. 'This program will not replace humans but help create a more streamlined process for radiologists for better patient outcomes.' Other team members include David Hirschorn, MD, chief of informatics and imaging; and Daniel Nicosia, software engineer. 'Since 2017, the Innovation Challenge has consistently provided an exceptional platform for our Northwell colleagues to present their inventive solutions,' said Richard Mulry, president and CEO of Northwell Holdings. 'We are delighted to collaborate with them, furthering these advancements and broadening their influence on how care is provided and experienced not just within Northwell, but across the health care landscape.' Northwell Holdings, the for-profit venture investment arm of Northwell, works with doctors, scientists, staff and entrepreneurs both in and out of the health system to advance the commercial potential for internal innovation and development of commercial joint ventures. The last innovation challenge, held in 2023, awarded two transformative projects: iNav (AI-driven cancer patient navigation) and StrokeFighter (bioelectronic therapy for stroke) each received $500,000 to further their research and development. Other past projects funded have included research into the first non-invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis, a therapeutic drug candidate as a potential treatment for HPV infection, real-time actionable data related to ED utilization, and the allocation of clinical resources and infrared thermography for early detection of tissue pressure injury.
