How chasing perfection wasn't just a fantasy for Loretto in TSSAA basketball state title win
MURFREESBORO — Despite dreaming of an unbeaten season since last October, it still felt like a fantasy for Loretto basketball.
But the Mustangs made history on Saturday knocking off two-time defending state champions Alcoa, 68-66, in overtime to claim the TSSAA boys basketball state tournament Class 2A championship. Loretto becomes the first public school since Union City in 2008 to win a gold ball with an undefeated record.
As the final buzzer sounded, the Mustangs erupted off the bench and into a frenzied mosh pit of smiles, hugs and tears, reaching perfection with a 35-0 season.

Mr. Basketball finalist Grayson Burleson paused among the chaos and took a sigh of relief, doing his best to process just how special his first and last season in black and gold was. Burleson, who transferred from Summertown last summer, finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.
"At first I was like, dang, we might lose and then we kept going," he said. "Finally when Corben (Reynolds) blocked the shot and I caught it, its just, it's over. We're done. And it just felt so good. Everything that we've all sacrificed, everything I've sacrificed, my family, all of Loretto ― look at the support they brought tonight to watch us play ― and it just felt it's finally finished when we caught the ball. Like (coach Greg Tipps) always says in huddle, we always say finish at the end."
Nothing was easy for the Mustangs on Saturday, who throughout the year became accustomed to 20 and 30-point victories. Down by as many as 12 in the first half and leading by as many as eight in the fourth quarter, the game ebbed and flowed until ultimately requiring an additional four minutes to decide it. In the end, Loretto ended Alcoa's 2A title streak. The Tornados (25-6) captured the previous two state titles.
Reynolds came up with the game-sealing block as Alcoa's Condis Cherry, who scored 20 in the game, rose up for a 3-point attempt in an effort to make the game-winning play for Alcoa. Reynolds finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists and was named to the All-Tournament team.
"I don't think there's any feeling in the world that can match that," Reynolds said. "I mean, I can get a wife and kids, I hope she doesn't see (this) but, it's probably the best feeling I've ever had in my life."

Mustangs coach Greg Tipps claims his second gold ball with the win and first since 2018. Hearing his players' preseason aspirations for not only a gold ball, but an unbeaten season as well, Tipps told his team he'd coach them to that standard. While the approach was painstaking at time for players, it ultimately led to the elation felt after making history.
"He pushed us every day in practice," Burleson said. "Our practices were different, he coaches us to perfection. That's hard sometimes, but we all bought in and we all had the same goal at the end. And without him, we wouldn't be here."
Kasen Buie was named Class 2A state tournament MVP after a 19-point, 14-rebound performance in the title game. It's a moment Buie had long anticipated after illness had limited his minutes throughout last season, which saw the Mustangs suffer defeat in the region semifinals after a buzzer-beating game winner by Cannon County.
"I knew it was going to be my last three games I'd ever play, so coming in I just knew I had to give it everything I had, night in and night out," Buie said. "And it led me to here, where I am now."
For some the season's end is bittersweet, making history on the biggest stage but playing their last game alongside teammates that have become brothers. While tears of joy flew for some, All-Tournament honoree Jaxson Roberson couldn't help but smile through it all, wrapping his Loretto career.
"I looked over at (my teammates) and they were crying, and I was like, I can't cry right now," Roberson said. "I know it's my last one and I'm never going to get to play with y'all again, but I was just so happy."

Shohei Ohtani is moving ever closer to his first pitching appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In fact, there's now a chance his fans might not even have to wait until the All-Star break. Ohtani looked sharp while throwing three simulated innings on Tuesday at Petco Park before the Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres, manager Dave Roberts said. The outing was another significant step in Ohtani's recovery from the elbow surgery that has prevented the two-way superstar from pitching since he signed with the Dodgers before last season. Ohtani threw just under 50 pitches to two minor league hitters during the third simulated game in his gradual comeback to the mound. The three-time MVP used his fastball and sweeper impressively, according to Roberts and Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior. "I thought he was really good," Roberts said. "I thought the fastball had life. I thought the sweeper was really good. ... (The hitters) said the stuff was coming out really well. It was about 44 pitches or something like that, so it was really good." The Dodgers have been cagey about the timeline for Ohtani's return to the mound, with Roberts suggesting in recent weeks that it might not happen until after the All-Star break. But after Ohtani's latest mound outing, Roberts now says the chance of Ohtani pitching in a game before the All-Star break begins July 14 is "north of zero." "It doesn't have to be a full buildup, because anything that he can give us is certainly going to be additive," Roberts added. "But I still stand by him and Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache, the training staff. They're going to drive this. So I'm just anxious for the next one." Ohtani hasn't pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he abruptly left in the second inning of his final start for the Los Angeles Angels. He was eventually diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament that required surgery. Ohtani has demonstrated elite pitching ability when healthy: He went 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while starting 86 games over five seasons for the Angels. He didn't pitch at all in 2019 and made just two starts in 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani has remained steadfastly committed to playing both ways despite his hitting prowess, and the Dodgers could really use him on the mound this season. Still, the Dodgers say they won't rush their cornerstone. "It's tempting," Roberts said with a smile. After being linked to several players to address their issues, the Lakers may have yet another offer that could see them solve this problem. Advertisement As constructed, the Purple and Gold have virtually no big men on their roster. With Jaxson Hayes potentially on the way out in free agency, the Lakers have effectively depleted their resources of centers. To make matters worse, the team has also been torn about their position on forward Rui Hachimura. With the likelihood of Hachimura being included in trade packages, the team may very well be devoid of frontcourt depth. The factors in the Lakers' favor are that they still have the non-taxpayer MLE available to them, allowing them to potentially sign players like Clint Capela. Additionally, they also possess limited but relevant assets, giving them more flexibility with signing centers. But the larger concern now is their lack of frontcourt depth, i.e, the wings. Their interest in De'Anthony Melton could be of some benefit in this regard. But instead, we take a look at a trade proposal by Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz to help the Purple and Gold sign Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. Advertisement Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Lauri Markkanen Utah Jazz Receive: Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, 2031 first-round pick The Lakers and the Jazz have engaged in several trades in the past. With another proposal on the horizon, we examine how the trade impacts each team. The Lakers Acquire A Bona Fide All-Star The acquisition of Lauri Markkanen could potentially reset the roster situation for the Lakers. At 7'0", Markkanen is a legitimate big man. Although he isn't a center by any means, he is a gifted forward, capable of spacing the floor and creating shots for himself. Advertisement Markkanen showed a lot of potential for developing into a star-caliber player during his early years in Chicago. This became a reality during the 2022-23 season with the Jazz when he earned his first All-Star nomination. He averaged 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds that season while shooting 49.9% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. Although the 28-year-old has been an inconsistent presence on the floor since, owing to injuries, he remains a capable player. Last season, even after playing only 47 games, he recorded an average of 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds. On the Lakers, Markkanen would be a natural fit next to Luka Doncic and LeBron James. As mentioned, he doesn't slot in as a center, hence the need for a lob threat will still need to be addressed. However, acquiring a third star would give the Purple and Gold a massive offensive boost. In a system where he isn't the primary focus for defenders, Markkanen is capable of producing in a significant capacity. This move is also beneficial as he effectively becomes the replacement for Hachimura. While he may not be able to contribute in the same capacity on defense, he brings a very legitimate upside on the offensive front. The Utah Jazz Continue Their Rebuild The Utah Jazz were the worst team in the West last season. While this may have been a part of their strategy to tank, Utah is in no position to compete as currently constructed. Advertisement A trade of this nature simply helps the Jazz acquire necessary draft capital, with the 2031 first-round pick, and expiring contracts to facilitate moves in the following season. The likes of Maxi Kleber, Gabe Vincent, and Hachimura all fit the bill in this regard. There is a greater likelihood that the Jazz may simply trade Hachimura again to another team in the offseason. Having put an average of 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds on 50.9% FG and 41.3% from beyond the arc, the forward would demand decent value. Trading him would allow Utah to build its reserves and potentially add young players as well. A key addition to the Jazz, however, would be young Lakers sharpshooter Dalton Knecht. The 24-year-old guard showcased a lot of potential for developing into a legitimate perimeter threat. He averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds on shooting splits of 46.1% from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. Given the Jazz's roster construction, Knecht may find himself in a position to play significant minutes, either as a starter or as the first choice off the bench behind Jordan Clarkson. Advertisement Potentially paired with Collin Sexton and Keyonte George, Knecht would find himself amidst Utah's project that could become relevant if nurtured. With good veteran leadership as well, the team could certainly look to improve upon last season's record. Lakers Gain Flexibility With Austin Reaves This trade proposal has its benefits for both teams, but it is quite evident that the Lakers are the real winners. While Markkanen's contributions are certainly an added advantage, it is important to address that the Purple and Gold would manage to acquire him without trading Austin Reaves in this deal. Reaves' contract has been a point of concern for the team. However, given the kind of interest he has garnered, he could help facilitate a move for a superstar. With Markkanen on the team, the Lakers gain the flexibility to reassess their approach and restructure their plans. The priority will be finding a big man to replace Jaxson Hayes. Then, the Lakers will do whatever they can to fill out their bench with worthy role players. With Luka Doncic and LeBron James expected to lead the way again, the Lakers should be in a position to contend in the West once again, but unless they begin this season with the proper adjustments (both internal and external), they will never reach their full potential. In our NBA trade idea, we suggested a deal based around Jarred Vanderbilt and two future pick swaps (2026, 2028) in exchange for the Knicks' Mitchell Robinson, who is only making $12.9 million next season. Advertisement Robinson is not known for being a consistent scorer, but he brings defense and rebounding to the frontcourt. Most importantly, he'd send Jaxson Hayes to the second unit and give the Lakers a proper center rotation. While Robinson was dealing with injuries this season, he still left his mark with averages of 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. With these five starting games, the Lakers will have the advantage in most matchups, but it doesn't end there. The Lakers would still have some help off the bench in the form of Dorian Finney-Smith, Bronny James, and Jaxson Hayes. Getting this lineup together before opening night is a long shot for the Lakers, but still very possible as they look to make one last title run for LeBron James. At the very least, they'll be on the hunt for some big-name stars, like Lauri Markkanen, who can come in and help them win while giving them some stability for the future. As it stands, nothing is off the table for the Lakers, and they will spare no expense to give their star the best possible odds of winning the title.
