DBKL actively implements AI integration in smart city management
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is actively implementing the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various aspects of smart city management, with two main initiatives highlighted: digital twin and AI-powered traffic management.
The Digital Ministry said the digital twin initiative is a virtual city model that allows real-time simulations to be used for more effective urban planning and faster emergency responses.
Meanwhile, AI-powered traffic management will enable real-time analytics systems to optimise traffic flow and detect incidents, thereby helping to reduce congestion and improve road safety.
'The use of AI in major cities like Kuala Lumpur now plays an important role in accelerating the modernisation of urban infrastructure and services.
'It not only enhances urban management efficiency but also directly contributes to the improvement of the quality of life for city residents,' said the ministry in a statement today.
The ministry said that as part of its initiative to promote the adoption of digital technologies including AI and 5G, the Deputy Digital Minsiter Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, along with the senior management of the ministry and related agencies, today also visited the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre.
In efforts to further strengthen the country's smart city ecosystem, the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL 2025) will be organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) from Sept 17 to 19.
'This expo will be the main platform to showcase the country's aspirations and achievements in smart city development,' said the ministry.
The ministry added that MDEC is also committed to making Malaysia a regional leader in smart city development and digital transformation via various strategic initiatives focused on future technologies such as AI and 5G.

Govt mulls housing above train stations to ease congestion
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is reviewing a proposal to build housing projects above railway stations to help ease traffic congestion. The plan is being studied with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and regulatory amendments are in progress. "This means the (public housing) project would be built above (the railway station). It will include commercial housing.... not all units will be public housing, but some of them will be. This are among the measures that will be taken (to ease traffic congestion)," he said at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum hosted by the Higher Education Ministry. Also present at the forum were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Anwar also addressed the construction of vertical schools under the Kota Madani development, saying they will follow strict safety standards and improved designs. "In Kota Madani Putrajaya, vertical schools will indeed be introduced, and parking will be underground. The residential level will be a proper garden, while the school will be located above. If a school has a lift, it will be dedicated for school use only. So, one can walk from level 14 down to the kindergarten or school, but the construction will be subject to strict conditions," he said. He said the Kota Madani project in Penang will involve 10,000 housing units in Seberang Jaya and Batu Kawan, in South and Central Seberang Perai respectively. "This will include vertical schools, fire stations, and clinics all within the vicinity, so people won't have to bear transportation costs. Otherwise, the MRT won't be viable as people won't use it. This can help reduce the burden on public transportation," he said. Meanwhile, Loke said his ministry and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government are reviewing a plan to reduce or remove parking spaces in flats near railway stations. He said the plan requires policy amendments and has not yet been finalised.

Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur to support Malaysia's 2040 Smart Nation agenda

Commenting further, Gobind said that with ASEAN's digital economy on the cusp of exponential growth, the expo offered a unique platform to showcase cutting-edge technologies and foster meaningful dialogue on how AI and digital transformation would shape the cities of tomorrow. Meanwhile, in the same statement, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer (CEO) Anuar Fariz Fadzil echoed the sentiment, calling SCEKL25 a catalyst for the smart city revolution in Southeast Asia. Malaysia gears up to host ASEAN AI Summit, SE Asia's inaugural Smart City Expo
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will host Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL2025), Southeast Asia's first edition of the globally renowned Smart City Expo World Congress, and the ASEAN Summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI), showcasing its leadership in smart city development and addressing the impact of AI on urban futures. The ASEAN Summit on AI will take place from Aug 12 to Aug 13, while SCEKL2025 will be held from Sept 17 to Sept 19. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that, as the ASEAN Chair this year, Malaysia's hosting of SCEKL2025 reflected its commitment to shaping the future of urban innovation, not just for the nation but for the entire region. 'With both ecosystem and infrastructure in place, Malaysia is not only ready to host SCEKL25, we are ready to lead the development of AI Cities across ASEAN,' he told a press conference after officially launching the 100-day countdown to the SCEKL25 here today. Regarding the participation of ASEAN cities in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN), Gobind said that greater uptake among different countries is definitely part of the ongoing conversation within ASEAN member countries. The ASCN is a collaborative platform where cities from the 10 ASEAN Member States work towards the common goal of smart and sustainable urban development. The ASCN was established in 2018 with 26 pilot cities, and it has since expanded to 34 cities. As the ASEAN chair, Gobind added that Malaysia is actively advancing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), which aims to unlock US$2 trillion (US$1 = RM4.24) in digital economic potential by 2030 through cross-border investment, market access, and harmonised digital regulations. 'Hosting SCEKL25 is part of this broader leadership agenda. It positions Malaysia as a regional hub for smart city innovation, public-private collaboration, and inclusive digital development,' he added. SCEKL2025 is expected to bring together over 10,000 delegates, 300 exhibitors, and participants from more than 20 countries, serving as a platform for policy-to-project collaboration, investor engagement, technology showcases, and real-world urban solutions. 'We are proud to have the support of global brands such as Dell, Intel, Ericsson, and Huawei, as well as key associations including the Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance, Smart Cities Network, The Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology, and the Malaysia PropTech Association,' the minister added.
