More screen time, more trouble: Research finds emotional risks for children

LONDON, June 11: A major international study involving nearly 300,000 children has found a two-way relationship between screen time and children's emotional and social well-being.
According to the study, children who spend more time using devices such as televisions, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles are more likely to develop emotional and behavioral issues, including aggression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Researchers also found the reverse to be true: children already experiencing emotional or social challenges were more likely to spend increased time on screens. The findings were published Monday in the Psychological Bulletin, an academic journal.
Time spent on gaming consoles, in particular, was more strongly associated with these issues than other forms of screen use.
"Rather than breaking it down by the exact game people were playing, it's safe to make some assumptions," said Dr. Michael Noetel, associate professor of psychology at The University of Queensland in Australia and one of the study's authors.
He noted that the games analyzed included console, computer, and mobile games. When asked about violent games specifically, Noetel clarified that the study did not find a direct link between violent content and behavioral problems.
"Some studies broke the games down by whether they were violent, but our interpretation was that most parents knew to limit the amount of violent content to give kids under 10," he explained. "Instead, the key finding was that gaming in general — regardless of the specific type — showed much stronger links to emotional problems than other screen activities like watching TV or using educational apps."
The study, one of the most comprehensive of its kind, analyzed 117 long-term studies conducted between 1972 and 2024. It focused on children aged 10 and under, following them over time to help identify potential cause-and-effect relationships.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children aged 2 to 5 should be limited to one hour of recreational screen time per weekday and no more than three hours on weekends. The study found that children who exceeded these guidelines were more likely to develop socioemotional difficulties.
"More than 40% of kids aged 8 to 12 are using screens for more than four hours per day," said Dr. Tara Narula, chief medical correspondent for ABC News, during an appearance on "Good Morning America." "When you add the rising rates of mental health disorders in kids — half of which begin before age 14 — it becomes clear why understanding the effects of screen time is crucial."
Despite the concerning findings, researchers stressed that the goal for parents should not be to eliminate screen use entirely. Moderate, educational screen use was associated with a lower risk of future emotional or social problems.
Instead, the study encouraged parents to help children avoid using screens as their sole emotional outlet. Encouraging social interaction with family and peers, ensuring sufficient sleep, and promoting physical activity were also highlighted as essential.
"We've all been guilty of it, but it's OK to say no and to set limits and boundaries — and to do so in a noncontrolling way as a parent, if you can," Narula added.

NEW YORK, May 21: A large study involving The University of Queensland has found that newborn babies with low vitamin D levels are more likely to develop mental health conditions such as ADHD, schizophrenia, and autism later in life. Researchers looked at the vitamin D levels of 71,793 people, many of whom were diagnosed with mental disorders during childhood or early adulthood. This is the biggest study of its kind. Professor John McGrath from UQ's Queensland Brain Institute led the research, which was done in partnership with Aarhus University and the State Serum Institute in Denmark. The team studied six mental health conditions: major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and anorexia. 'We found that babies with lower levels of vitamin D had a higher risk of developing schizophrenia, ADHD, and autism,' Professor McGrath said. Previous studies had already suggested a link between low vitamin D at birth and both schizophrenia and autism. This new research looked at more mental health conditions and also used two vitamin D-related markers and genetic data for a deeper analysis. Professor McGrath said the findings support the idea that giving vitamin D supplements to pregnant women and babies might help lower the chances of mental illness later in life. 'Vitamin D is very important for a baby's brain development, and many pregnant women around the world have low levels of it,' he said. 'That's why vitamin D supplements are already recommended during pregnancy in many countries.' He compared this to the way folate supplements are used during pregnancy to prevent birth defects like spina bifida. 'In the same way, our study suggests that making sure babies have enough vitamin D could reduce the risk of several mental health problems.' The research used data from the iPSYCH study, which began in Denmark in 2012 to explore mental health issues. Vitamin D comes mainly from sunlight, but it can also be found in some foods and supplements. The study results were published in The Lancet Psychiatry. Funding came from the Danish National Research Foundation, the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research, and the University of Queensland.

LOS ANGELES, Dec 25: Julian Lennon, the eldest son of the late Beatles legend John Lennon, has revealed that he underwent a seven-hour emergency surgery in Los Angeles after discovering a cancerous mole on his arm. The 61-year-old musician and photographer shared his traumatic experience on social media, just five years after publicly dealing with another cancer scare. Julian explained the situation, awaiting biopsy results, and recounted his emergency operation. He credited his dermatologist, Dr. Tess, who had previously "saved his life" during a prior cancer scare in 2020, for urging him to return for surgery. The surgery involved his skin, shoulder, and forearm, with one of the areas diagnosed as Melanoma. Julian urged his followers to get checked by their doctors, saying, 'Hi Folks, Well, here's how this goes… Before I flew to New York from Los Angeles, for Good Morning America, Sirius XM, iHeart Radio & My Fotografiska Q&A Book Signing Event, I went to see, as I usually do when in LA, My lovely Dermatologist - Dr. Tess, who was the one who caught & operated on My Mole/Skin Cancer a few years ago, and literally saved My Life…' He continued, 'Anyway, after having just finished GMA, I received a message from Dr. Tess, with some urgency to return to Los Angeles, as I had 2 locations on My Skin, Shoulder & Forearm, one of which was Melanoma, that should be operated on ASAP! So instead of going home to put my Christmas tree up and happily finish the year off, relaxing at home, I flew directly back to Los Angeles, after all my work in New York was done." Julian flew back immediately and went straight to surgery at a clinic in Los Angeles. He expressed his gratitude, saying, "I went directly from LAX airport, to surgery, with a surgeon recommended by Dr. Tess, who spent several hours cleaning up and operating on me, with large margins, in the hope that we have, at the end of the day - clear margins, which would mean being free from cancer… The operation was a success, but we have yet to have the results of the biopsy, which we may not receive before Christmas.' He expressed deep appreciation for the medical professionals involved, saying, "First of all, I'm very thankful to Dr. Tess and Dr. Tim, for being able to coordinate this surgery at such short notice, but for once again, hopefully Saving My Life… One can never be too confident in circumstances like this, but we all believe that Dr. Tim has saved the day… So finger's crossed for now.' Julian added, "Obviously good news, would be the best Christmas present ever… Which I'm hopeful for… But I just want to say, this is also a timely reminder to all, to please get yourself checked out by your doctor… It only takes a short while to do so, and you may just be saving your own life, at the end of the day… so please, for the sake of yourself, your family, and friends just go to your Dr and do what must be done…" He ended with a heartfelt message: "I love life and I want to live for a very long time and this is one way, and a choice, that could determine your future… I wish you all happy holidaze and a healthy long life… Love to all ' In 2020, Julian faced a similar scare, sharing how he was 'shaking inside' after an emergency operation to remove a cancerous growth from his head. His dermatologist had noticed a lump that had always been there but "looked and felt a little different." She recommended a biopsy, which revealed the lump was cancerous, leading to immediate surgery in Los Angeles. Julian wrote on Facebook at the time, 'She urged me to have a Biopsy 2 days ago, which I obliged... Only to learn, 24 hrs later, that it was malignant/cancerous, and that her recommendation was to get it removed immediately, which is what happened today... Hopefully, we managed to remove all that was cancerous, but the mole is being sent off again, for a further/deeper analysis, and I'll have those results next week.' Reflecting on the time leading up to his diagnosis, Julian shared that it had been one of the "most positive and productive weeks" of his life, especially after the emotional challenges he faced following the death of his mother, Cynthia, in April 2015, after a short battle with cancer. Julian's father, music legend John Lennon, was tragically shot and killed in 1980.
