Bengaluru: It had all the trappings of a gripping kidnap thriller: He received a call and the woman told him to step out of the pub and get into a car waiting outside with its headlights blinking.

Eager to meet her, he stepped out, spotted the vehicle, and confirmed with the driver whether she had sent it. The driver nodded and he got in. But instead of heading towards Koramangala as expected, the cab took a different route. That's when a sense of unease crept in. His fears came true moments later when two men suddenly entered the car and began assaulting him. It was clear now: he was taken!
That marked the beginning of the ordeal for 37-year-old Lawrence Melwin, a native of Kerala, who worked as a manager in a travel agency in Dubai.
According to Ashoknagar police, Melwin had come to Bengaluru to visit his family staying at Basavanagar. On July 14, Melwin visited a club in Indiranagar and it was when he received a call from a woman named Mahima Watt stating he could meet her and she would send a cab to pick him up.
"I stepped out of the club around 3am. A cab with blinking lights stopped for me as Mahima had said. But two men later entered, assaulted me, and grabbed my bag, which contained Rs 1 lakh and two iPhones.
They forced me to share the passwords of the phones," Melwin told police. He was later driven to a service apartment and locked in the flat.
"A third man entered the flat and demanded Rs 50 lakh to release me. I told them that I could arrange Rs 20 lakh, but they refused. They locked me in a room and provided food," Melwin narrated.
Meanwhile, the miscreants made Melwin send voice messages from his phone to his family members, saying he was in Kodagu.

The kidnappers allegedly upped the ransom to Rs 2.5 crore and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to pay up. On July 22, Melwin saw hope when a woman in the neighbouring flat responded to his cries for help. "I shared my sister's mobile number with her, requesting her to inform her that I was here," Melwin said.
His family members suspected something was amiss and filed a complaint with Ashoknagar police. Cops found that his mobile phone's last location was in Hebbal.
By then, the kidnappers realised that the location was no longer a secret and moved him out.
"I was quickly bundled into their car. After reaching Yeshwanthpur, they stopped near a star hotel and forced me to say I had Schizophrenia and that was why I felt I had been kidnapped. They recorded my statement on their mobile phones. Handing over a keypad mobile and my SIM along with Rs 1,000 in cash, they warned me not to approach police, or else, they would finish me," Melwin stated.
Using the phone, Melwin called his sister, and by then, cops, who had discovered his mobile location, reached the place.
Based on the information, police arrested four accused: Mohammed Asif Risaldar, 42, Mohammed Sohail Sheik, 25, of RT Nagar, Salman Pasha, 22, of DJ Halli, and Mohammed Nawaz, 27, of KG Halli. While Risaldar and Sheik work as commission agents at Kandaya Bhavan on KG Road, others are employed in garages.
"These four accused worked as directed by Mahima and two others," police said.
Now the question is: Who is Mahima? Melwin told police: "We met at a party in the city (Bengaluru), and since then, we have been friends." Asked why Mahima decided to kidnap him, Melwin said he had no idea.
"We have many loose ends in the case, and the missing dots will get connected once we get Mahima and others into our custody. Presently, Mahima and two of her close friends are elusive. Special teams have gone to Mumbai and Vijayapura in search of them. It looks like a financial dispute gone wrong," an investigating officer said.

The victim was allegedly assaulted twice in 2021, first at the farmhouse and later at a residence in Bengaluru. According to the charges, Revanna also recorded the assaults on his mobile phone.

Former Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna sentenced to life imprisonment in rape case

A special court in Bengaluru on Saturday sentenced former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment in a rape case, reported Live Law. On Friday, Revanna was convicted of raping a 48-year-old worker employed at his family's farmhouse and recording the assault. Announcing the punishment on Saturday, Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat told Revanna to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation, according to Bar and Bench. Revanna was arrested on May 31, 2024, after returning to Bengaluru from Germany, where he had fled on April 26, 2024. He was suspended from the Janata Dal (Secular) on April 30, 2024. This came after videos of alleged sexual assaults against several women, allegedly recorded by Revanna himself, surfaced just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He has since been booked in four different cases. Three women have accused Revanna of sexual assault, while the fourth case against him involves charges of sexual harassment, stalking and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code. Special Public Prosecutor BN Jagadeesha had earlier told the court that ' stringent and rigorous punishment' should be imposed on the former MP. However, appearing for Revanna, Senior Advocate Nalina Mayegowda said that he is young and his charitable activities 'and contributions to society should be taken into consideration'. Soon after Revanna fled to Germany, he and his father, former state minister HD Revanna, were booked by the Karnataka Police for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. In the case where he has been convicted, the chargesheet includes sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to being in a position of control over a woman and committing rape and repeated rape on the same woman. He also faces charges under the Information Technology Act, the Deccan Herald reported. The trial in the case began on May 2, when the statements of the complainant were recorded. A Special Investigation Team of the Karnataka Police had filed charges on April 2.

Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna given life sentence in rape case

Bengaluru, Aug 2 (PTI) A Special Court here on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment, former MP and suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna in a rape case. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of Rs 10 lakh on the accused. The court had on Friday convicted the 34-year-old in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him and reserved the sentencing for Saturday. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice — at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence– in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. Earlier in the day, while the prosecution sought life sentence for Revanna, the 34 year-old sought leniency, claiming he did nothing wrong and that his only mistake was his 'fast' growth in politics. He broke down in court as he appealed to the judge for a lesser punishment. He told the court that he is a BE Mechanical graduate, and has always passed on merit. '…they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)…the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them give a complaint," Prajwal told the court. Pointing out that the woman (victim) had not complained to anyone including her husband or kin about the alleged rape, he said that she comes and gives complaint when certain videos were circulated. Stating that he will bow down to the court's conviction, Prajwal said, 'I have a family, I have not seen my mother and father for six months now…..please give me a less sentence is what I request the court." 'The only mistake I made in my life is growing fast in politics," Prajwal, arrested in May last year upon his arrival from Germany, told the court. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the case had filed a 1,632-page charge sheet with 113 witnesses in the case in September, 2024. Revanna was booked under sections 376(2)(k) (being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, commits rape on such woman), 376 (2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the IT Act. Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Nayak and Additional SPP B N Jagadeesha following Prajwal Revanna's conviction on Friday had said that the court had accepted the prosecution's case and convicted him on all counts. Noting that the prosecution examined 26 witnesses and marked 180 documents and the main evidence is of the victim, Nayak said the prosecution relied not only on the oral evidence, but also the digital and technical evidence, DNA report and Forensic Sciences Laboratory report. 'The clothes that were worn by the victim during the rape were also identified and the Investigation Officer (IO) was successful in seizing them even after three-four years. Also, digital evidence played a role as the accused himself had recorded the video." Four separate cases have been registered against Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual harassment, and the SIT was tasked with probing cases. Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD (S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda. The cases came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26, 2024 Revanna was arrested by the SIT on May 31 last year, upon his arrival at Bengaluru Airport from Germany in connection with a case registered at the Holenarasipura Town Police Station. Revanna had failed in his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. JD(S) suspended him from the party following the cases filed against him.
