President congratulates Pakistani scientists

The President underscored the strategic significance of the newly launched satellite and said that it will greatly assist in disaster management and early warning systems, agricultural planning, urban development, infrastructure expansion, and environmental monitoring.
He said, 'This milestone serves as a shining testament to Pakistan's advancing space capabilities.' He also expressed his sincere gratitude to the government of the People's Republic of China for its valuable cooperation and support in the successful execution of the satellite launch.

Chinese team visits Cotton Research Institute
MULTAN: A delegation from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) visited the Cotton Research Institute (CRI) in Multan. The Chinese delegation included David, Dr Shang, and Chai. Representing Pakistan were Brigadier Sohail Ishrat (retd), Director of the Green Pakistan Initiative, along with five other members. During the visit, the delegation was given a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing research activities and key achievements of CRI Multan. Detailed discussions were held on the current condition of the cotton crop, including pressing challenges such as the control of cotton viruses and pests —particularly whitefly, jassid, and pink bollworm, according to a spokesperson for the Punjab Agriculture department. The delegation also toured the institute's laboratories and field plots, where various experimental cotton varieties are being cultivated, and they closely reviewed the ongoing research projects. The spokesperson stated that both parties agreed on launching a joint 3 to 5-year research programme. Under this initiative, a specialized group comprising Chinese and Pakistani experts will be formed. The primary goal of this group will be to trial Chinese cotton varieties at ten different sites across Punjab. These trials aim to assess the adaptability of the varieties to local climatic conditions and their resistance to viruses and pests. In addition, mutual collaboration was emphasized in areas such as the development of local cotton varieties, capacity building of human resources in the cotton sector, and fully operationalizing the cotton biotechnology lab. This visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan-China cooperation in agricultural research and development, with strong prospects for significant improvement in cotton productivity. Present on the occasion were Chief Scientist Dr Sajid-ur-Rehman (Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad), CEO PARB Dr Abid Mahmood, Cotton Commissioner Dr Khadim Hussain, Director Cotton Dr Ghulam Sarwar, and private sector experts including Dr Saghir Ahmad and Dr Iqbal Bandesha, among other stakeholders and agricultural scientists, who offered valuable suggestions regarding cotton cultivation and crop management.

Punjab, Wuhan universities develop new hybrid rice seed
LAHORE: Punjab University and Wuhan University China have developed a new hybrid rice seed, which will increase the per acre yield of rice three fold from approx. 1600kg to 5600kg per acre. The new hybrid rice is the first Honglian variety of hybrid rice to be produced in Pakistan. Scientists from PU and Wuhan University, China have jointly developed new varieties of hybrid rice. PU's Department of Plant Breeding Genetics Chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq and Dr Muhammad Ali Klasra, while Prof Renshan Zhu, Dr Xianting Wu, Xu and others from Wuhan University China were part of the research team. After the completion of the technical stages, the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council approved the new hybrid rice. According to Chairman of the Department of Plant Breeding Genetics Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, the new rice was successfully tested in different cities of four provinces of Pakistan. He said that the preparation of the new hybrid rice is the result of ten years of research and experiments. He said that the new hybrid rice varieties have been registered under the name PU786. He said that the new hybrid rice has the ability to resist bacterial diseases. He said that the new hybrid rice also has the ability to resist extreme heat and dangerous insects. According to Dr Ashfaq the new hybrid rice will increase rice production at the national level. He said that the PU VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has played an important role in promoting research on new hybrid rice. He also appreciated former dean Dr Saleem Haider for his support in the research. PU VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said that the new hybrid rice is a revolution in the agricultural sector of Pakistan. He said that the new hybrid rice will further promote joint research projects in universities of Pakistan and China. He said that the new hybrid rice will also prove useful for citizens in terms of nutrition. He said that the common farmer will benefit from three times more production per acre. He said that the approved new hybrid rice will increase the export of Pakistani rice worldwide.
