ENG vs IND: England name replacement for injured spinner Shoaib Bashir
Despite having an England central contract, fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach has been overlooked for selection. Leach, who lost his place as England's leading spinner to Bashir last year, did feature in three Tests during the tour of Pakistan and was part of the squad that visited New Zealand over the winter.
Dawson's recall is being seen as a recognition of his consistent domestic performances. The Hampshire all-rounder has been in remarkable form over the past two county seasons, which earned him back-to-back Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) Player of the Year awards.
Though more recently seen as a white-ball specialist, Dawson was part of England's victorious 2019 World Cup squad. However, he spent several years on the sidelines of international cricket before earning a comeback in the T20I series against the West Indies earlier this summer.
With the fourth Test against India looming, Dawson now has the opportunity to showcase his skills on the Test stage once again, offering England valuable experience and a different spin option in the absence of Bashir.

Marquez, who is back with Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa, left the Indian men's football team head coach position after a one-year tumultuous tenure, which has seen the team plummet to 133rd FIFA ranking. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The AIFF is now in need to quickly find a replacement as India are still fighting to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia. Among the many applicants, the most prominent are former Liverpool footballers Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell, former Barcelona reserves manager Jordi Vinyals and former Brazil U-17 coach Caio Zanardie, as per a report in the Times of India. Former Tajikistan, Maldives and Afghanistan coach Peter Segrt, Mauritania coach Aritz Lopez Garai and Roel Coumans, who was part of the Australian team coaching staff at the 2018 World Cup, have also applied to AIFF. More from Football The Indian football federation, however, is not happy as it feels the 'high-profile' candidates are missing. 'Last year there was massive interest in the job, many of them (current) national team coaches and those who had managed teams at the FIFA World Cup,' a senior AIFF official told TOI. 'This time around, there's also interest from across the world, but not as many high-profile candidates.' Will Constantine get a third tenure? Constantine, who has coached India in 73 matches across two tenures, is one of the most familiar names. He has won multiple tournaments with India, including the LG Cup (2002), SAFF Cup (2015), Tri Nation Series (2017) and Inter-Continental Cup (2018). Antonio Lopez Habas and Sergio Lobera, who have trophies in ISL, are also in contention after applying for the job. Former Punjab FC coach Staikos Vergetis, who won the I-League with them, has also applied. The list of Indian coaches who have applied for the top job includes Khalid Jamil, Sanjoy Sen and Santosh Kashyap. The AIFF is still to pick a list of final candidates, who will be interviewed before a final appointment is made. India's next match is against Singapore, away from home, but they may also play some friendlies in September and October FIFA windows. They are currently at the bottom of their group in the final round of qualifiers after losing 1-0 to Hong Kong last month. N Shree Charani claimed 10 wickets during India's historic T20I series win over England. India allrounder Sneh Rana has lavished praise on young bowlers N. Shree Charani and Kranti Goud, crediting their seamless transition into international cricket amid the absence of senior pacers Renuka Singh Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar. The two rising stars have impressed on India's ongoing tour of England, playing key roles in both the T20I and ODI series. Shree Charani, a standout performer in the five-match T20I series, which India clinched 3-2, claimed 10 wickets and consistently posed problems for the English batters. Kranti Goud has been doing really well, even in the WPL," she said. 'It's a very simple conversation with them – whatever confidence you show there, you have to do the same thing in international cricket." The Indian team, she added, is focused on the present challenge rather than being burdened by future goals like the World Cup. 'We are not thinking much about the future. Obviously, the World Cup is impending. It is an important year. But presently, what are we doing, what are we working on, and are we able to execute it or not? That is important." On her own bowling approach, Rana stressed the importance of partnerships over fixed roles. 'It's not important where you are bowling from. What's important is how you bowl in partnership. My mindset has always been to take wickets first, and we prepare ourselves in the nets in the same way. 'First of all, we go for wickets. But on the other hand, how you contain is also important – because when you contain, automatically there is pressure on the opponent, and that brings wickets," she added.
