The actress shared that she faced financial uncertainty and professional rejections just like anyone trying to make it big in showbiz.
Actress Dakota Johnson has grown up under the spotlight. Often called a nepo baby, she is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and stepdaughter of actor Antonio Banderas. Despite belonging to a family who already had a strong foothold in the industry, Dakota recently revealed that her journey into the field was anything but smooth. She talked about her early struggles, including financial constraints.
In an interview with Elle, the 35-year-old actress shared that although she came from a privileged background, she faced financial uncertainty and professional rejections just like anyone trying to make it big in showbiz. 'For a couple of years, it was hard to make money," she said. Recalling times when she did not have enough money in her account to afford rent or buy groceries, Dakota added, 'I'd have to ask my parents for help. I'm very grateful that I had parents that could help me and did help me."
While the actress shared that she was extremely lucky to have parents who supported her, Dakota told the media outlet that the time she was struggling 'certainly was not fun." She bluntly noted, 'The auditioning process, as you know, is the f–king worst."
However, things took a turn for her when she could not get into Juilliard, the only college she had applied to after passing out of high school. Her father promptly cut her off financially. 'I didn't get in, and my dad cut me off because I didn't go to college," she mentioned.
Eventually, that became a push for her, and she bagged a minor role in the 2010 biographical drama The Social Network. Dakota added, 'I started auditioning. I think I was 19 when I did 'The Social Network,' and then little jobs and stuff after that."
Dakota was first seen on-screen at the age of 10 in her mother's movie, Crazy in Alabama. For years after her debut as an actor, she featured in films and shows such as 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement, Ben and Kate and The Office before getting her big break as the lead character, Anastasia Steele, in Fifty Shades of Grey in 2013. She reprised her role in the two subsequent films.
Dakota is all set for her project, The Materialists, featuring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. The romantic comedy is releasing on June 13.

Dakota Johnson reveals dating ‘non-negotiable' after alleged split with Coldplay singer Chris Martin

Rumours have been swirling lately about Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin calling it quits after eight years together. While the Coldplay frontman kept it classy — even giving Dakota's latest film Materialists a sweet shoutout during a Las Vegas show — Dakota's own words hint she might not be feeling quite as warm about her ex. At the end of his band's Music of the Spheres World Tour concert, Chris gave a subtle nod to Dakota, saying, 'Thank you so much, everybody. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to each other. Don't forget to see Materialists. We love you.' But Dakota, chatting with her co-star Chris Evans on the Today show with Craig Melvin, seemed to set a higher bar when it comes to dating. When asked about their one non-negotiable in a partner, Chris Evans was quick to say, 'Must love dogs. Gotta love dogs. If you're not a dog person, what are we doing?' — clearly a nod to his famously adored pup, Dodger. Then Dakota jumped in with her own non-negotiable, saying: 'Like, not an a–hole?' The interviewer couldn't help but react, and Chris applauded, 'That's concise. There it is. Nail on the head.' Dakota also got candid about what drew her to her role in Materialists, a rom-com about love, heartbreak, and all the messy, confusing bits in between. 'The complexities of all of the characters. The paradox. Everyone being confused about what the f–k they're supposed to do with their hearts and what's the right move. I found that very honest, and I found it just so relatable,' she said. She also dropped some wisdom on how society views relationships, saying, 'For a long time, we've all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world, when people should get married, divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad? Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn't matter.' Materialists is set to hit screens soon, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. The film dives into the world of a NYC matchmaker who's caught between the perfect match and her imperfect ex. It hits theatres on June 13.

Watch: How Autobiographical Blind Spots Ruin Stories

When filmmakers get too close to their subject, they often lose the one thing that makes a story resonate: honesty. In this episode of Frequently Made Mistakes, Sudhish Kamath breaks down the dangers of autobiographical blind spots—the storytelling flaw that turns biopics into PR. Using Sanju as a case study, we explore how proximity, nostalgia, and guilt can distort a filmmaker's perspective, softening the truth and sabotaging the story. Why did Rajkumar Hirani choose empathy over investigation? What does the film protect—and what does it hide? We'll also show how other personal narratives like The Social Network avoid this pitfall, and offer practical writing exercises to help you build critical distance in your own scripts. Because bad choices make good stories… only if you're brave enough to tell the truth. SUBSCRIBE for more deep dives into cinematic craft and screenwriting pitfalls. Chris Martin is still a Dakota Johnson despite alleged breakup: And we've got proof!

8 years together, has to count for something. And Chris Martin is making sure the message comes through. The Coldplay front man, at the end of the band's Las Vegas concert, held last weekend, signed off with love — save for a little Hollywood twist at the end. Chris said, "Thank you, everybody! Be kind to each other!" — and the parting shot that's got the internet buzzing?: "Don't forget to go see Materialists!". And by buzzing, we mean, little, ache-y floodgates of emotions opening up from fans. Comments expressing this read, "This one makes me sad. I was rooting for them", "Awhn… I loved them together" and "Good for him! He's a class act.", to quote a few. Dakota, 35, and Chris, 48, were first linked together back in 2017 and have maintained a fairly low profile when it comes to their romance, save for a handful of headline-making public appearances — Chris' India trip for Coldplay's Music of the Spheres World Tour earlier this year in January with Dakota in tow, being a prime example. The two reportedly got engaged back in 2020, though their dynamic has largely been on-again, off-again for a while now. This breakup however, comes across as final, seeing as the actor has been spotted sans her engagement ring, since news of the split went public. And what really sealed the deal, was Dakota's look for her appearance on Seth Meyers' late night show last week, nearly-unanimously dubbed, her take on the 'revenge dress', though the actor has made no such comment or acknowledgement when it comes to the Nensi Dojaka's Spring/Summer 2025 'naked dress'. Coming back to Materialists, besides Dakota, the film, set in New York, also stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans. The film is set for a release on June 13.
