Fifa mulling playoff for Club World Cup after Leon ban
Fifa could stage a playoff between Los Angeles FC and Mexico's Club America to determine the final place in this year's Club World Cup following the expulsion of Club Leon, world football's governing body confirmed on Sunday.
A Fifa spokesperson said the organisation was considering staging a one-off match between Major League Soccer's LAFC and Club America to fill the vacancy created by Leon's ban.
Leon were expelled from the inaugural edition of the 32-team tournament earlier this month after violating rules concerning multi-club ownership.
Under Fifa's playoff plan, LAFC, who finished runners-up to Leon in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, would face Mexican giants America, who were deemed as the 'top-ranked team' in confederation ranking, Fifa said.
'Fifa can confirm it is considering one play-off match between LAFC and Club America for the right to participate in the Fifa Club World Cup 2025, replacing Club Leon following the decision of the Fifa Appeal Committee,' a Fifa spokesperson said. 'The winner of the play-off would qualify unless legal proceedings rule otherwise.'
Leon were tossed from the tournament – which is being held across the United States from June 14 to July 13 – because the club is owned by Grupo Pachuca, which also controls Liga MX side Pachuca, who are also taking part in the Club World Cup.

Real Madrid have signed defender Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a deal until 2031, the Spanish giants said yesterday. The 26-year-old England international's contract at Anfield was drawing to an end but Madrid paid a fee to bring him in earlier so he can play in the Club World Cup. Right-back Alexander-Arnold, who has just won the Premier League title with Liverpool, came through the academy of his boyhood club and won the Champions League in 2019. Saudi officials are in 'difficult' talks to keep Cristiano Ronaldo in the country, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said yesterday, after the star footballer suggested he was leaving Al Nassr. The Portuguese superstar, whose arrival in 2023 heralded a rush of late-career players to the oil-rich country, could transfer to Al Hilal and feature at the upcoming Club World Club, the source said. 'There is an ongoing difficult negotiation to convince Ronaldo to stay and play' in the Saudi Pro League next season, said the source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football. 'First option is a transfer to Al Hilal with an opportunity to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup or to Asia champion Al Ahli,' the source added. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo posted 'This chapter is over' hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up this week with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once again. A special transfer window opens from June 1-10 to allow the 32 teams involved in the newly expanded Club World Cup to sign players.
