Belgian princess to resume Harvard studies after Trump move to ban foreign students

Princess Elisabeth, 23-year-old heir to the Belgian throne, will be able to continue her studies at Harvard University, her spokespeople said, after she was caught up in a US government move to bar the entry of foreign students to study there. 'I can confirm that, for now, all the conditions seem to be in place for the princess to continue her studies at Harvard,' the Belgian Royal Palace's communication director Xavier Baert said on Tuesday, confirming a newspaper report. In May, when US President Donald Trump's administration announced the ban, the Royal Palace voiced concern that Princess Elisabeth, being a Belgian national, might be unable to continue her studies at Harvard. But in June, a federal judge blocked the administration from implementing the proclamation Trump signed that sought to bar foreign nationals from entering the US to study at Harvard. The Trump administration has said it is trying to force change at Harvard and other top-level universities across the US, contending they have become bastions of leftist 'woke' thought and antisemitism, which they deny. The administration has appealed the judge's ruling, but with the new school year set to begin on Sept 2, the injunction against the foreign student ban remains in effect. The future queen of Belgium is set to begin her second year of a two-year master's program in Public Policy at Harvard, a course designed to broaden students' perspectives and sharpen their skills for 'successful careers in public service', according to Harvard's website. Almost 6,800 international students attended the 388-year-old university in its most recent school year, comprising about 27 percent of its student population.

Israel's Netanyahu Says ‘Weak' Australian PM Abandoned Jewish Community

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese had forsaken Australia's Jewish community and betrayed Israel, a remark that may further strain diplomatic ties tested by the war in Gaza. Netanyahu's comment followed Israel's revocation of the visas of Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority on Monday, after a decision by Canberra to recognize a Palestinian state and cancel the visa of an Israeli lawmaker. "History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews," Netanyahu said on the official prime minister's X account in English. The Israeli lawmaker had been due to meet with Australia's Jewish community, which has faced a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks since the beginning of Israel's war with Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza, almost two years ago. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Monday called Israel's visa revocation counter-step an "unjustified reaction" and said Netanyahu's government was increasing Israel's diplomatic isolation. Israel has been facing mounting international pressure over the toll its military offensive has taken on the civilian population in the shattered Gaza Strip. Albanese said on August 12 that Netanyahu was "in denial" about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Albanese made his remark a day after announcing Australia may recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations general Assembly in September, following France, Britain and Canada. Netanyahu has said this would serve as a reward for Hamas' October 7 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the Gaza war.

UN condemns Israeli minister for taunting Palestinian prisoner

GENEVA: The UN's human rights office on Tuesday condemned a far-right Israeli minister for taunting a Palestinian prisoner in his cell and sharing the footage online. National security minister Itamar Ben Gvir published a video on Friday last week showing him confronting Marwan Barghouti, the most high-profile Palestinian detainee in Israeli custody. UN Human Rights Office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan said the footage was unacceptable, adding: 'The minister's behavior and the publication of the footage constitute an attack on Barghouti's dignity.' Barghouti, now in his sixties, was sentenced in 2004 to life in prison on murder charges. Regarded as a terrorist by Israel, he often tops opinion polls of popular Palestinian leaders and is sometimes described by his supporters as the 'Palestinian Mandela.' 'International law requires that all those in detention be treated humanely, with dignity, and their human rights respected and protected,' said Kheetan. He warned that the minister's actions 'may encourage violence against Palestinian detainees' and enable rights violations in Israeli prisons.
