How A 3 AM Email Changed Everything For Google's Android Lead Sameer Samat

NDTV15-07-2025
Sameer Samat, the head of Google's Android ecosystem, revealed how a late-night "cold mail" to Google co-founder Sergey Brin in 1999 turned out to be a crucial moment in his career. In a recent interview, Samat said that at 3:00 am, he sent an email to Brin seeking advice on whether to pursue his startup or attend graduate school.
"This is 1999 3 a.m. email," told Business Insider, revealing what he asked Brin: "'What would you do in this situation? I'm sure you had this wrestle with this grad school decision.'"
Brin responded within a minute, inviting Samat to Google's office for a discussion. The Google co-founder introduced Samat to several engineers during the meeting, and an impromptu interview took place. Despite being offered a job, he declined to focus on his startup, Mohomine.
However, Brin provided valuable guidance and introduced him to investors who later funded his startup. Mohomine was eventually acquired by Kofax, now known as Tungsten Automation.
"He didn't have to do any of that," Samat said. "And so I try to pay that forward, too, when people call me up with something similar."
He joined Google in 2008 as a Product Manager Director and scaled through the ranks, becoming VP of Product Management at Google Shopping and eventually the General Manager of Google Shopping and Travel. He left Google in 2015 to become President at Jawbone, but returned nine months later as VP/GM of the Android Ecosystem.
As President of the Android Ecosystem, Samat oversees the strategic direction and development of Android. He recently announced a leadership restructure, combining the Android and ChromeOS teams under his leadership.
Samat advocates for entrepreneurial risk-taking and emphasises the importance of following one's passion. He believes that sometimes, naivety can be beneficial for entrepreneurs, allowing them to take bold steps and achieve success.
Samat holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from UC San Diego and has also attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.

Google to invest $6 billion in southern India data centre

By Sudarshan Varadhan SINGAPORE: Google will invest $6 billion to develop a 1-gigawatt data centre and its power infrastructure in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the Alphabet unit's first such investment in India, government sources said on Wednesday. Due to be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, the data centre investment includes $2 billion in renewable energy capacity that will be used to power the facility, two Andhra Pradesh government sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The search giant's data centre will be the largest in capacity and investment size in Asia and is part a multi-billion-dollar expansion of its data centre portfolio across the region in countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. In April, Alphabet said it was still committed to spending some $75 billion this year to build data centre capacity despite the economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff offensive. Alphabet did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister Nara Lokesh, who is in Singapore to discuss investments with thegovernment and business leaders there, did not comment on the Google investment. "We've made certain announcements like Sify, which are public," he said, referring to a 550-MW data centre Sify Technologies plans to build in the state. "There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements." STATE'S POST-SPLIT INVESTMENT DRIVE Andhra Pradesh, a state run by a leading ally of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was split into two in 2014, losing its former capital Hyderabad and a major revenue source to the newly created Telangana state. Andhra Pradesh has since been looking to attract investments to ease the financial strains of high debt and social spending. Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has already been able to finalise investments in data centres with total capacity of 1.6 GW, adding that it aims to build 6 GW of data centres over the next five years from nearly zero currently. He expects the initial 1.6 GW of already agreed data centres to be operational in the next 24 months. That would be more than the 1.4 GW currently in operation in the entire country, according to real estate consultancy Anarock. "We're also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today," Lokesh said. Cable landing stations - typically located close to data centres requiring fast and reliable connections to global networks - are used to store equipment which receives and relays data from undersea cables. Lokesh also said the state was looking to build up energy infrastructure to meet sustainability requirements of data centres. He said he anticipated power generation capacity requirements of as much as 10 GW from the electricity-intensive industry over the next five years. "Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that's the unique value proposition that we bring to the table," he said. Some of the additional capacity will be coal-fired, however, as data centres require reliable, high volume power throughout the day, he added.

Google unveils Veo 3 Fast, an upgraded AI model for faster video generation

Google has unveiled an upgraded version of its most advanced AI video generation model, Veo 3, that is said to be faster and specifically tailored for enterprises. The Veo 3 Fast is designed for speed and rapid iteration, Google said in a blog post published on Wednesday, July 30. The AI video generator can be accessed via Vertex AI, Google's developer platform for building machine learning models, from August this year. The tech giant is also bringing image-to-video capabilities to Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast. This means that users can create 8-second AI-generated video clips of static images using these tools. They have to upload a source image and a text prompt describing the video they want to create. Since its launch at Google's I/O annual developer conference in May 2025, Veo 3 has been used to generate a total of seven million videos. The company's enterprise customers have used the AI video generator to create over six million videos since it became available in public preview on Vertex AI in June this year. 'Google Cloud customers around the world are using Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast on Vertex AI to create professional-quality video content with unparalleled efficiency and creative freedom,' the Alphabet-owned company said. The upgraded model, Veo 3 Fast, can help marketers respond to trends by quickly generating and testing variations of ad concepts. It can further be used to create AI-generated videos of a company's entire product catalogue based on still images. Veo 3 Fast is also capable of providing animated explainers and training modules in less time, the company said. To address the risk of deepfakes, Google said that all AI-generated videos created using Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast will have digital watermarks embedded into every frame using SynthID. 'Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast are also covered by our indemnity for generative AI services,' the company said. This means that Google will offer protection or cover legal costs if its enterprise customers are sued for copyright infringement, violating intellectual property rights, etc. Veo 3 became available in India earlier this month. It lets users create high-definition (1080p), eight-second clips with audio in a single step. 'This means you can create scenes with characters that speak with accurate lip-syncing, and sound effects that fit the mood,' Google said. The video generator has been designed for professional marketing campaigns, product demonstrations, and internal communications. 'Veo 3's native dialogue generation helps businesses connect with an international audience by producing a video once and localising the dialogue for dozens of languages,' the company said. However, support for Hindi or any other Indian language does not appear to be available yet. It is only accessible for subscribers of the Google AI Pro package, which costs Rs 1,950 per month and is free for students.
