La Crosse and Eau Claire celebrate Transit Equity Day
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Transit Equity Days in La Crosse includes free bus rides for all and informational sessions about the history of public transit. Director of Transit Adam Lorentz says it's important because many people aren't aware of public transit options in the city, 'For some people, it comes down to knowledge. They don't know what our services have to offer. We're trying to get all walks of life to utilize public transportation. It's a city service offered to them. We want to make sure that they understand how to utilize it and understand the importance for people that may have another option for transportation.'
Public transit is important for people like Elizabeth Fryseth. She is legally blind and encourages anyone else who has trouble getting around on their own to utilize city buses in La Crosse, 'The access to public transit is vital. Otherwise, there's barriers in getting around town. It's always around whether it's shopping at a local grocery store, going to work, or going on outings with friends. It's also cost-effective.'
With public transit being available in La Crosse for decades, the city wants to continue providing service to those who need it to travel to any destination at any time. Lorentz explains, 'Everybody has the right to participate in the community and public transportation should not be a hurdle to be able to participate in their community whether it's employment, medical, recreation, or whatever the reason being. We have AM and PM service and we offer 7-day-a-week service. We contract with Onalaska, La Crescent and the town of Campbell. We have a robust service e and we have a lot of people who depend on that service to get to work, food or recreation.'
The city of Eau Claire is recognizing the day of action by elevating the message that public transit should be safe, sustainable, and equitable for all people and communities. The day is celebrated in many ways including free bus rides and a seat on each Eau Claire transit bus will be marked in Rosa Parks' honor, acknowledging her work, and the city's efforts to make public transit accessible and affordable to all. Eau Claire Community Services Operations Manager, Ty Fadness, says, 'This day is important because it does remind us that, historically, things haven't been as good as they are right now. And it's also a good reminder of how we can make things better to meet the needs of everybody in our community.'
The city of Eau Claire's Transit Department plans to begin its 'Micro Transit' on July 1st. Helping northside residents to get transit to downtown. And the new transit center is set to officially open this summer.

San Francisco Muni Metro stations closed because of equipment problem
San Francisco Muni Metro stations were closed between Embarcadero and Van Ness on Wednesday afternoon because of an equipment problem, transit authorities said. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency initially reported around 12:30 p.m. a problem with overhead equipment on the light-rail line between the Embarcadero and Montgomery stations. As of shortly after 2:30 p.m., the Muni Metro stations at Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, Civic Center and Van Ness were closed while maintenance personnel worked to fix the problem. Bus shuttles were taking passengers between the affected stations during the service disruption, according to Muni officials. There was no estimate yet for when regular service will resume.

Eau Claire sees rise in aggressive turkeys
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – There's a nuisance in Eau Claire that isn't flying. With ruffled feathers and feisty feet, some birds are looking to get face to face with those in the city. Eau Claire Community Services Director, Lane Berg, explains, 'We've received a few calls from people stating that they've had a few aggressive turkeys chase them as they're navigating our trails system. Specifically on Old Wells Road between Domer Park and Highway 312.' There are multiple videos online showing some of these aggressive birds. Berg says, 'The turkeys are not an imminent danger to people. They're kind of a nuisance and like to chase people.' The city, the DNR and other experts say the aggression comes as turkeys are in the midst of mating season and 3 local turkeys are roosting up the commotion as they try to get their dating lives in motion. Turkey hunter Scott Deutscher says, 'You're going to see turkeys show mating activity, even as early as the middle of March.' The city reports that humane removal of the birds would've cost about $1,300. Harvesting the birds was also considered, but according to Berg, 'We certainly don't want to go down that route. We consider the turkeys residents of Eau Claire, just like people.' That leaves just one option. Returned aggression. Berg says, 'The DNR did indicate the one thing that's usually successful is harassment. Deutscher explains, 'They're probably not used to aggression from an individual. Try to keep your distance from them. If they do approach you, stand your ground and match that aggression.' No matter what you decide to do, stand your ground or run away, it could be a while before the turkeys settle down. The mating season could stretch to the end of May, and there is no release valve for the problem until then. But at least we have Thanksgiving to look forward to. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
