Blue Jays plan to be buyer as MLB trade deadline approaches, GM says

And with it comes the inevitable season of rumours.

Much like last year's trade deadline, the Jays will be in Baltimore later this month. Unlike last year, the Jays plan to be buyers in the days and even hours leading up to July 31.
Article content
Recall last year's hectic slate that would see every pending free agent moved, beginning with reliever Yimi Garcia being shipped to Seattle. Names such as Kevin Kiermaier, Justin Turner, Yusei Kikuchi and Danny Jansen were also jettisoned.
Article content
At the time, the Jays weren't good and looked to bring back as many prospects as possible.
Article content
Fast-forward to this season and the Jays are good. In fact, with the New York Yankees in town for a four-game series, the possibility exists for the Jays to emerge as divisional leaders in the AL East.
Article content
For now, the club will be looking to add ahead of the trade deadline, according to general manager Ross Atkins. His monthly gathering with the media was conducted in the hours leading up to Monday's series opener against the Bronx Bombers.
Article content
Given the financial clout of Rogers, money won't be a problem. The club also has some interesting prospects to dangle.
Article content
Admittedly, Atkins said improving the pitching staff is among the team's to-do list, as is adding a right-handed bat.

Monday's starter in Max Scherzer was making only his third start for the Jays and second at home following a thumb injury the veteran sustained in his debut with the club.
Article content
Another off-season acquisition Atkins was able to attract was Anthony Santander, who remains on the injured list. The GM confided the switch-hitting slugger experienced a subluxation of his shoulder, which in layman's term means Santander had his shoulder pop in and out.
Article content
Per Atkins, Santander has yet to resume swinging a bit, but could soon progress to the level where he can take hacks. With the all-star break right around the corner, Atkins said a return to the big leagues for Santander has not been ruled out.

Like anything shrouded in uncertainty, only time will tell when it applies to Santander.

Bo Bichette has been among baseball's best, his pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning against the host Texas Rangers credited for helping ignite the Jays to their run.
Article content
Midway through his round of batting practice Monday, Bichette walked off the field with manager John Schneider behind the team's starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. A few hours later, it was announce Bichette would be scratched from the lineup because of right knee discomfort.

Blue Jays score 4 times in sixth-inning rally to edge Yankees 5-4
Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27) hits a two-run single against the New York Yankees during sixth inning MLB baseball action, in Toronto on Monday, June 30, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Thomas Skrlj TORONTO — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in three runs and Max Scherzer allowed two runs over five innings as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 5-4 on Monday night. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 46-38 and move within two games of the Yankees for the American League East Division lead. Scherzer finished with seven strikeouts and no walks while allowing three hits in five innings of work on 71 total pitches. Carlos Rodon started for the Yankees and allowed five hits and two earned runs while walking three and striking out four in five innings. Guerrero Jr. continued his hot streak at the plate, finishing with a double and a single while driving in three runs to finish 2-for-4. The 25-year-old slugger leads the Blue Jays in home runs, RBIs, OPS, and walks. The Jays were trailing 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, but scored four runs to go ahead 5-3. Jazz Chisolm Jr. clubbed his 14th home run of the season in the fourth inning off Scherzer to drive in two runs and give the Yankees an early 2-0 lead. Cody Bellinger followed suit in the eighth with a solo shot, his 12th homer of the year, to make it a 5-4 game and bring the Yankees to within one. The comeback would fall short, though, as Jeff Hoffman closed things out with a scoreless ninth to secure the victory and pick up his 19th save of the season. Announced attendance was 40,619, a sellout, and the game took 2 hours and 42 minutes to play. STAYING HOT The Blue Jays remain one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball. Since May 8, the Blue Jays have gone 30-18, the third-best winning percentage in MLB during that span, while also ranking top-10 in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and OPS. INJURED SPRINGER George Springer was forced to leave the game in the sixth inning after sliding awkwardly into third base during Guerrero Jr.'s two-RBI single. Before his exit, Springer had gone 0-for-2 with a walk. UP NEXT Right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6) starts for the Jays on Canada Day, while the visiting Yankees will hand the ball to left-hander Max Fried (10-2). Jays' Scherzer finds his ‘good stuff' in strong start against Yankees
TORONTO – Pitcher Max Scherzer's second start at Rogers Centre this season was far more successful than this first. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched five strong innings on Monday night as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 5-4. Scherzer struck out seven while allowing three hits and two runs on 71 pitches. He also did not walk a batter, and his fastball topped out at over 95 miles-per-hour. 'I thought I was on the ball better today,' said Scherzer post-game. 'I kind of made a little adjustment in-between starts and I felt like it got me in and really started dialing in pitches.' Scherzer was forced to leave his first start with the Blue Jays on March 29 after just 41 pitches due to a thumb issue, spending the next three months on the Injured List. Monday was just his third start of the season. 'I felt like I had a good fastball tonight,' he said, crediting the pitch for his success against a vaunted Yankees lineup. 'I was able to pitch with that and set up every other pitch and it allowed me to kind of navigate their lineup a little bit when I was in there. So, there's a lot of good.' This version of Scherzer appears to be the version the Blue Jays were expecting when they signed him to a one-year contract worth $15.5 million. 'It was evident with the way he started the game, that, yeah, that's the best version of Max that we've seen' said Blue Jays manager John Schneider following the game. 'That's who he is,' said Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 'He's the type of person who comes here early every day, always focuses on the game, and gives you everything he's got.' Scherzer's return has come at an opportune time for the Blue Jays. With the club in the thick of a divisional race, Monday's victory leaves the Blue Jays just two games back of the Yankees for the American League East lead. The Blue Jays have gone 30-18 since May 8, earning the third-best winning percentage in the majors during that span while also ranking top-10 in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and OPS. 'Everybody's been doing their job,' said Guerrero Jr. 'Just helping each other. And we trust in each other a lot. So, we've been playing great as a team.' It was a total team effort for the Blue Jays on Monday. Guerrero Jr. drove home three runs with a single and double, while second baseman Davis Schneider finished 2-for-3 with a double and shortstop Ernie Clement went 2-for-5 with one RBI. With the lead down to one in the bottom of the ninth, closer Jeff Hoffman entered the game and pitched a scoreless frame to secure the victory and earn his 19th save of the year, ranking him third among American League pitchers. 'It felt like a very meaningful baseball game,' said Schneider. 'It is June. It'll be July tomorrow (Tuesday), and tomorrow's a big day for us as a team and as a country. I'm sure it'll be fun again tomorrow.' UP NEXT Right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6) starts for the Jays on Canada Day, while the visiting Yankees will hand the ball to left-hander Max Fried (10-2).
