Survey finds nearly 70% of people in Japan trust mass media
A combined 68.7% were very or moderately trustful of mass media, little changed from 68.2% in the previous 2023 poll, according to the latest survey.
Meanwhile, 6.7% said they do not trust mass media at all.
The postal survey was conducted by the company's in-house think tank between January and March this year, covering 4,460 people between the ages of 18 and 79. Valid responses were provided by 2,117 people.
The survey also showed that 46.5% picked television as their most frequently used source of information on elections and politics. Internet news sites or apps were selected by 17.8%, exceeding traditional forms of newspapers and magazines, chosen by 16.0%. Social media was selected by 10.9%.
"It appears that a majority of people do not necessarily link trust in mass media as a whole to criticism about mass media over Fuji Television Network's handling of an alleged sexual assault by a former TV star, as well as over some gubernatorial elections," said Doshisha University professor Kenichi Ikeda, who analyzed the survey results.

Olympic medalist Kerley provisionally suspended for whereabouts failure
American Fred Kerley, a two-time 100m Olympic medalist, has been provisionally suspended for failing to notify anti-doping officials of his whereabouts, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced Tuesday. Kerley, who took 100m silver in Tokyo and bronze last year in Paris as well as the 2022 world 100m crown, was suspended for "failing to comply with his anti-doping whereabouts obligations," according to the AIU. One dead after yacht and cargo ship collide in waters off Japan
A yacht and a cargo ship collided in waters off southern Japan on Wednesday, with one person confirmed dead and several others reported missing, officials said. The captain of a 492-ton gravel carrier reported to the Japan Coast Guard that it collided with a yacht close to Hoto Island in Oita Prefecture, coast guard spokesperson Nanaka Yoshida said. "We discovered one person at around 10 a.m. and passed them over to emergency services," she said. According to the Oita Coast Guard Office, the person taken to the hospital was Makoto Yamamoto, 70, from the city of Oita, who was in a state of cardiac arrest before being confirmed dead. The coast guard is continuing the search for several others who were supposed to be on board the yacht, "but we don't know the details of the yacht or how many were on board," she said.
