Jayne Bryant on the summer celebrations in Newport
The Caerleon Arts Festival returns in July, bringing creativity and colour to spaces across the area, and the Big Splash Festival is on July 19 and 20, set to fill Newport city centre with performances and activities for all ages.
In May, Newport Women's Forum hosted another brilliant afternoon tea. Extremely grateful to the women who joined us at the Holiday Inn Newport. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with great company and support for a fantastic cause.
This year's event was a little different, opening with a powerful performance by Herstory Theatre Company. Clare Drewett and Adele Cordner brought the inspiring story of Betsi Cadwaladr to life.
Applications for this year's bursary award are still open, so if you or someone you know would like to apply, there's still time: newportwf.wordpress.com/bursary-application-form/
We have also had the welcome news that the UK Labour Government's spending review is delivering £445 million for rail in Wales. I have long called for urgency in delivering the proposals from the Burns Delivery Unit. With both Labour governments focusing on public transport infrastructure, these new stations across Newport, including one in Newport West, will make a real difference to how we travel, while helping to free up space on our roads.
For many constituents, it will be good to know that Wales is continuing to make important progress in women's health, with new measures aimed at improving care and dignity.
GPs across Wales are being trained to recognise endometriosis earlier, helping reduce delays in diagnosis and improving outcomes.
Access to free period products is expanding in public spaces, supported by the Welsh Government's £3.2 million Period Dignity fund, a vital step in tackling period poverty.

Summer is a busy time for events in Newport
From cultural celebrations to family fun, our city is buzzing with events that embrace diversity, tradition, and inclusion. Something for all interests or abilities. We've already enjoyed some fantastic festivals. The Caerleon Arts Festival delivered again, bringing colour and creativity to the area, while The Big Splash returned with free entertainment and activities for all ages to enjoy. And there's plenty more to come. On August 10, the Welsh Yemeni Festival returns to Pill Harriers rugby field, celebrating rich heritage and community spirit. Then we have Pill Carnival over the Bank Holiday weekend, and fans of pop culture can get excited for Comic Con Wales at the ICC. Summer is also a time of progress and support for our communities. Our Welsh Government is working hard to deliver what you have asked for and as the school year came to a close, we marked a major milestone in the Welsh Government's commitment to children and families with the full rollout of Universal Primary Free School Meals. Since launching in 2022, more than 50 million meals have been served in primary schools across Wales. Now, every child in every primary school in Newport can count on a free school meal every day helping to ease pressure on families and ensure every child is ready to learn. Then looking ahead to a new school year, there's even more support available. The School Essentials Grant is now open for applications, offering up to £200 per child to help with the cost of uniforms, shoes, bags, and stationery. It's not just a boost for families, when you apply, your school receives extra funding too. Applications can be made through the Newport City Council website, you can also contact my office for help. For those facing financial difficulties, the Discretionary Assistance Fund has been improved with enhanced emergency payments and expanded eligibility. It's designed to help more people when they need it most. If you're unsure what you might qualify for, the Welsh Government's 'Claim What's Yours' campaign is a great place to start. As your Member of the Senedd, I'm here to help Newport West constituents with any devolved issues. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like any help or want to discuss anything. or 01633 376627. Jayne Bryant is Senedd member for Newport West

Over the next ten days, highlights include Shakespeare under the stars with a performance of As You Like It at the Amphitheatre, and From Page to Stage, a celebration of novels that inspired musicals, held on Saturday, 5 July, at St Cadoc's Church. On Monday, 7 July, actor Joe Rooney, known for his role as Father Damo, performed A Celebration of Father Ted at St Cadoc's Church, starting at 7:30 pm. Visitors can expect choirs, crafts, lively conversations, great food, drama and creative energy throughout the Roman town. The Caerleon Arts Festival, which runs until Sunday, July 13, is entirely community run and powered by passionate volunteers. Organisers are always eager to hear new ideas and welcome those willing to help out. Chair Tim Davidson said:' Come along and start helping out by having fun.'
