Unity plea ahead of huge Eid celebrations
Eid al-Adha, one of the main festivals in the Islamic calendar alongside Eid al-Fitr, will be marked in the UK between Friday and Monday.
Two Eid in the Park events were expected to draw thousands of people to Birmingham's Small Heath Park and Wolverhampton's West Park on Friday - although the former will move indoors to Green Lane Mosque due to the weather.
"I think it would be an understatement to say that our hearts are with people who are suffering right now," said Haniya Aadam, from the mosque.
Eid al-Adha remembers the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael at God's command - although ultimately God spared him.
Ms Aadam said she felt the lessons of Ibrahim were especially important at a time of conflict and division in the world.
"It's that obedience that Ibrahim had to God, it's that full faith and that full trust that God was going to look after him and look after his child," she explained.
"We can't ignore that. I don't think there's any Muslim here that's going to not be thinking about the Muslims thousands of miles away that are suffering.
"So having that trust in God, the way that Ibrahim did, to have a happy ending, brings hope to us."
About 5,000 worshippers are expected at the event in West Park, the fifth to be held, and which is organised by Jaamia Masjid Aqsa with the event starting with speeches from 10:00 BST.
Sohail Khan, councillor for Tettenhall Regis and one of the organisers, echoed Ms Aadam's sentiments.
"We live in a very polarised society," he said. "There's nothing better than to bring us all together under one common theme. It is Eid and it is a Muslim festival, but it's open to everybody.
"They don't have to partake in the religious side of it. But that's what Eid's about.
"It's about community."

Video captures plane crashing into parked aircraft at Montana airport
A small jet crashed into multiple planes while attempting to land at a Montana airport on Monday, Aug. 11. Officials in Kalispell, a town about three hours north of Helena, said authorities responded to the scene of a plane crash at Kalispell City Airport around 2:08 p.m. on Aug. 11. The pilot of the jet, a Socata TBM 700, which had four people aboard, lost control of the aircraft and crashed onto the runway, striking several parked airplanes and igniting fires on numerous aircraft. The four jet occupants, who are from out of state, managed to exit the plane with minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One of the planes struck by the jet was an unoccupied Swearingen SX-300. No additional injuries have been reported, authorities said. 'Police officers and fire crews acted quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing further damage,' Kalispell City Government said in a written statement. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading an investigation into the crash. Footage of the incident showed large clouds of smoke and flames billowing from the airport after the plane hit the tarmac. The airport primarily doesn't handle scheduled commercial flights and is located close to Glacier National Park, a wilderness area in Montana's Rocky Mountains. Montana U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke wrote in an X post on Aug. 11: "My staff is on site at the plane crash at the Kalispell City Airport. From what we understand, no one was injured, praise God. "We will be assisting local authorities and the airport in any way we can as they handle this unfortunate accident," the post continued. Consultation on town's 15-year plan extended
An opportunity for people to have their say on a town's improvement plans has been extended. The consultation in Northampton has already attracted more than 1,300 responses, with the deadline now delayed by a fortnight to Monday, 25 August. A senior councillor said it was a "pivotal moment" and residents could "directly shape" the future of the town. Reform UK-controlled West Northamptonshire Council said suggestions received so far included making Northampton a distinctive leisure destination, which was "better at showcasing its heritage and identity". People also said they wanted the town to be easier and safer to walk and cycle around.
