'Operation West Bengal': BJP Minister Sparks Row With New Campaign Call

BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has stirred controversy on Thursday by invoking a new political campaign dubbed 'Operation West Bengal', aimed at ousting the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) from power.
The comments, made ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi speech during a rally in Alipurduar, drew sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who issued a strong rebuttal within hours.
Addressing a gathering before the Prime Minister took the stage, Majumdar claimed that under PM Modi's leadership, BJP workers would carry out 'Operation West Bengal' just like 'Operation Sindoor', referring to past political events where several male BJP workers were allegedly killed at the hands of TMC goons.
He warned that the saffron party was ready to sweep away the Trinamool Congress and throw it "into the waters of the Bay of Bengal.
"In Kashmir, Pakistan had wiped off the sindoor (vermillion) from the foreheads of mothers and sisters. Narendra Modi took revenge for that. Just like Operation Sindoor, we the soldiers of BJP will now carry out Operation West Bengal and overthrow the TMC," Majumdar told the crowd, thanking BJP workers gathered in large numbers.
The BJP leader also referred to recent incidents in Murshidabad, claiming that Hindu homes were being selectively targeted and set ablaze. Drawing parallels with the exodus of Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s, he said, "I visited Murshidabad recently and saw houses burned down. Their only fault was wearing sindoor and tulsi malas. Kashmir and Murshidabad have now become one." Majumdar called on party workers to gear up for a final battle against the TMC government.
"We must be ready to uproot Mamata Banerjee's government in 2026 and dump it in the Bay of Bengal," he declared.
Reacting sharply, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a fierce counterattack on both Majumdar and Prime Minister Modi.
"They are talking about Operation Bengal. I challenge them to hold elections tomorrow. All central agencies are in your hands. We are ready," Banerjee told reporters here.

New Delhi: The 2025 Bihar Assembly Election may be held over two or three phases, Election Commission sources told NDTV Monday. The schedule will be decided keeping Diwali and Chhath Puja in mind, the sources also said. Diwali this year will be on October 20 and Chhath on October 28. The Bihar Assembly term ends on November 22, so the election process (including counting and declaration of results) must be finished before that. Sources said Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will visit the state sometime this month to oversee preparations. Meanwhile, the poll panel is training to BLO, or booth level operators to ensure a fair election, and avoid allegations related to voter lists like those made by the Congress and other opposition parties after the 2024 Maharashtra and Haryana elections and the Delhi election in February. The Bharatiya Janata Party romped to victories in all three. In Delhi it thumped the Aam Aadmi Party to claim power in the national capital for the first time in nearly three decades, and in Haryana it overcame a strong start by the Congress to retain power for a third consecutive term in the heartland state. In Maharashtra voter list fraud was alleged after the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi failed to perform like in the Lok Sabha election a few months earlier. The Election Commission had strongly refused all such claims. And now, as part of a renewed effort to counter such allegations, the poll panel will provide all BLOs with identity cards, sources said. This will allow them to go door-to-door for verification. Also, a campaign will be held to update the voter list, so people turning 18 can be added. This will also, sources said, eliminate the problem of duplicate voter ID numbers. The Election Commission is also prepared to deal with challenges posed by AI, sources said. 2020 Bihar Election The 2020 Bihar election was held in three phases; voting was on October 28, November 3, and November 7, with results announced on November 10. The result was an overwhelming victory for the BJP and Janata Dal (United)-led alliance, but there was much drama that followed. JDU boss and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lived up to his ' paltu Kumar' sobriquet in just two years later, in August 2022, declaring "I would rather die than go with the BJP (anymore)". He re-aligned with Tejashwi Yadav and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, but then flipped again. Amid confusion and controversy, in January 2024 he dumped the RJD and returned to the BJP's side. The 2025 election will be keenly watched, as much for what Nitish Kumar does next as for the BJP building up steam ahead of a critical round of state polls next year, when Bengal and Assam will vote. Both polls will likely be dominated by fierce debates over issues like immigration. In 2026 Tamil Nadu and Kerala will also vote. Both states have historically rejected the BJP and its brand of muscular nationalism, with the former giving the DMK and Congress alliance big wins in the past three major polls - the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly elections.

Bihar Dalit Girl Dies After Rape, Knife Attack. Waited 5 Hours For A Bed
Patna: A nine-year-old Dalit girl in Bihar's Muzaffarpur was raped and the attacker slit her throat and fled. The minor was later found, bloodied and semi-naked, by her mother. She was rushed to the nearest hospital and then referred to Patna. Outside the Patna Medical College and Hospital, the nine-year-old had to wait for six hours before she was attended to, her family has alleged. The girl died the next day. The shocking incident has raised serious questions regarding the state's law and order situation and health infrastructure as the Nitish Kumar government preps for the Assembly election later this year. The opposition parties Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress have targeted the BJP-JDU government and stressed that she could have been saved if she had been treated on time. According to police, the accused, Rohit Sahni, lured the nine-year-old with snacks. Sahni sells fish in the neighbourhood and the girl joined him. The accused then took her to a deserted area and raped her. He then slit her throat and fled the spot. The girl's mother was sleeping at the time. On waking up, she started looking for her. Neighbours told her that she was seen with Sahni on his bicycle. When Sahni was caught and questioned, he revealed where the girl was. The nine-year-old was found in a semi-naked state with severe injuries. She was rushed to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur and referred to PMCH in the state capital for better treatment. At PMCH, the girl's family has alleged, she had to wait for six hours because a bed was not available. She died yesterday. Her family has said the delay in treatment led to her death. Hospital authorities, however, have trashed this claim. PMCH Incharge Superintendent Abhijit Singh said the girl was given proper medical care. "When she was admitted here, we provided complete medical care from our side. The family's claims that there was a delay in treatment are baseless. We did everything we could. We consulted all the departments that needed to be involved and ensured she received treatment in the ICU as well." Main opposition RJD has hit out at the Nitish Kumar government over the tragedy. "Muzaffarpur's rape survivor daughter has lost. 'Chair' Kumar's cruel and indifferent system has won. The system that differentiates between rich and poor has won, and humanity has lost," RJD said in a post on X, targeting Chief Minister Kumar. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the brutality suffered by the victim and the negligence in her treatment were "extremely shameful". "If she was treated on time, she could have been saved. But the double engine government was negligent in saving her life, let alone ensuring her safety," Mr Gandhi said, demanding tough action in the matter.

Why was Sharmistha Panoli arrested? Kolkata Police's clarification amid row
The Kolkata police, being panned for arresting social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, have claimed that the controversial action was taken after " duly investigating and adhering to legal procedures". The police claimed they acted lawfully against the 22-year-old woman as she had been sharing offensive content that promoted communal hatred. The police said Sharmistha Panoli wasn't arrested for expressing patriotism or personal belief. "Kolkata Police acted lawfully according to the procedure established by law. The accused was not arrested for expressing patriotism or for personal belief; legal actions were taken for sharing offensive content which promotes hatred among the communities," Kolkata Police posted on Facebook on Sunday. The police said all legal procedures laid down by the law were adhered to. They claimed in a post on Facebook on Sunday that they had issued notices to the influencer but she was allegedly found to be absconding. "Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon during the day. She was thereafter produced before the appropriate Magistrate and was granted transit remand as per due process of law. Later, the court sent her to judicial custody," it said. In her videos, Panoli had called out Bollywood actors for being silent on Operation Sindoor. The police termed the narrative claiming she was arrested unlawfully, "mischievous and misleading". This narrative is mischievous and misleading," the Kolkata Police added. They said they had filed a case on allegations that she posted a video which was "insulting to the religious belief of a class of citizens of India and amounted to promoting disharmony and hatred between different communities". Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, the Kolkata Police stated. BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar has alleged that the police's action was rooted in the state government's policy of appeasement and "vote-bank vendetta". "Sharmistha Panoli, 22, a law student, arrested for a now-deleted video and a public apology. No riots. No unrest. Yet Mamata Banerjee's police acted overnight — not for justice, but for appeasement. But when TMC leaders insult Sanatan Dharma… mock Maha Kumbh and push communal poison — there's no FIR, no arrest, no apology. This is not justice. This is vote-bank vendetta," Majumdar posted.
