From beer to theatre: How the DC area is supporting fired federal workers
WASHINGTON () — It's been tough to fully comprehend all of the federal worker layoffs.
Many small businesses are looking for little ways to help, with different ways to show their support or just spread some cheer.
'We want to be a gathering place for the community,' said Leah Cheston, the owner of Right Proper Brewing Company in Northwest D.C.
Metro sees highest ridership since COVID-19 as return-to-work orders begin
Communities are struggling as federal workforce layoffs are turning lives upside down. That's why Cheston started a program called 'Executive Order Me a Beer,' where patrons can add $8 to their tabs, and the next fired federal worker to come in will get a drink for free.
'Our guests and our employees were getting laid off from their jobs,' Cheston said.
One of the newest employees, Alexandra Tontisakis, was hired at the brewery after she lost her job of one-and-a-half years at USAID.
'I don't think there's been a point in my career where I've been this stressed ever,' Tontisakis said.
While she navigates her post-USAID career, Tontisakis said there is a sense of camaraderie through the chaos at the bar, where she is serving free beers to other laid-off federal workers.
'It's comforting to know that we're all in the same boat,' she said. 'The boat might be leaking and we might be sinking, but we're sinking together.'
Cheston said strangers have purchased about 150 beers for fired federal workers, but only 30 have been claimed. She's hoping more come in, especially as she hopes to organize networking events.
Meanwhile, Theatre Washington is also helping those workers who lost their jobs stay entertained and keep their minds off the stresses of the job search.
'This is a significant shift': Jeff Bezos directs Washington Post opinion page to focus on personal liberties, free markets
The theatre announced several opportunities for those workers to receive free or discounted tickets to some productions in the D.C. area.
'It was a way to say, 'We are here,'' said Amy Austin, the president and CEO of Theatre Washington. 'Going to the theatre is such a nice catharsis. It's just such a great way to be watching a story with other people feeling the same feelings that you feel. And just letting your mind go to other places.'

Why Iranian cities are banning dog walking
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Local authorities in Iran have widened a ban on walking dogs, citing public health, social order and safety concerns. At least 18 cities have followed a police directive that bans dog walking in Tehran, the latest chapter in the nation's nuanced history with the animals. In 1948, Iran became "one of the first countries in the Middle East" to pass animal welfare laws, said the BBC, even the country's royal family kept dogs as pets. But, said Agence France-Presse, "owning" and "walking" dogs became a "contentious topic" following the 1979 Islamic revolution. In 2010, a senior cleric stated "friendship with dogs" is a "blind imitation of the West", where there are "lots of people" who "love" their dogs "more than their wives and children". He said there are "lots of narrations" in Islam that say dogs are "unclean", reported NBC News. In 2017, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that keeping the animals for "reasons other than herding, hunting and guard dogs" was "reprehensible". Then, two years later, a police directive barred dog walking in Tehran, and, in 2021, 75 lawmakers condemned pet ownership as a "destructive social problem", arguing that it could "gradually change" the "Iranian and Islamic way of life". But during the Covid pandemic, dogs and other pets "emerged" as "unlikely" heroes in Iran's "uphill battle" against the outbreak, said Middle East Eye. Attitudes began "shifting" and keeping pets became a growing trend among "middle-class families" and "older generations" alike. People "no longer believe" in "old cultural, religious or doctrinal taboos" as "unalterable Lord's words", said psychologist Farnoush Khaledi. The "shift" towards "deconstructing old taboos" on dogs is part of a "transformation of the Iranian identity" from "the traditional to the new". Two years ago, a Shia Muslim cleric became an "unlikely figurehead" for animal rights after he opened a dog refuge in Iran, said The i Paper. Sayed Mahdi Tabatabaei rescues stray dogs and posts about his activities to his 114,000 Instagram followers. Quite how strictly the rules are enforced is still to be seen. After Tehran police chief Hassam Rahimi announced the ban on walking dogs in public in the capital in 2019, there were protests when videos emerged showing dogs and puppies being killed through "gruesome" state-approved injections. But even though Rahimi promised severe penalties for dog walkers, the ruling has been only "loosely enforced", said Middle East Eye, and dog owners have continued to take their pets with them wherever they wanted.

Best CD rates today, June 11, 2025 (Lock in up to 4.2% APY)
The Federal Reserve lowered the federal funds three times in 2024. As a result, deposit account rates are on the decline. The good news: You can lock in a competitive return on a certificate of deposit (CD) today and preserve your earning power. In fact, the best CDs still pay rates above 4%. Read on for a snapshot of CD rates today and where to find the best offers. CDs today typically offer rates significantly higher than traditional savings accounts. As of June, the best short-term CDs (six to 12 months) generally offer rates around 4.00% to 4.50% APY. Today, the highest CD rate 4.2% APY, offered by Marcus by Goldman Sachs on its 9-month CD. There is a $500 minimum opening deposit required. The following is a look at some of the best CD rates available today from our verified partners. This embedded content is not available in your region. The 2000s were marked by the dot-com bubble and later, the global financial crisis of 2008. Though the early 2000s saw relatively higher CD rates, they began to fall as the economy slowed and the Federal Reserve cut its target rate to stimulate growth. By 2009, in the aftermath of the financial crisis, the average one-year CD paid around 1% APY, with five-year CDs at less than 2% APY. The trend of falling CD rates continued into the 2010s, especially after the Great Recession of 2007-2009. The Fed's policies to stimulate the economy (in particular, its decision to keep its benchmark interest rate near zero) led banks to offer very low rates on CDs. By 2013, average rates on 6-month CDs fell to about 0.1% APY, while 5-year CDs returned an average of 0.8% APY. However, things changed between 2015 and 2018, when the Fed started gradually increasing rates again. At this point, there was a slight improvement in CD rates as the economy expanded, marking the end of nearly a decade of ultra-low rates. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 led to emergency rate cuts by the Fed, causing CD rates to fall to new record lows. The situation reversed following the pandemic as inflation began to spiral out of control. This prompted the Fed to hike rates 11 times between March 2022 and July 2023. In turn, this led to higher rates on loans and higher APYs on savings products, including CDs. Fast forward to September 2024 — the Fed finally decided to start cutting the federal funds rate after it determined that inflation was essentially under control. Today, we're beginning to see CD rates come down from their peak. Even so, CD rates remain high by historical standards. Take a look at how CD rates have changed since 2009: Traditionally, longer-term CDs have offered higher interest rates compared to shorter-term CDs. This is because locking in money for a longer period typically carries more risk (namely, missing out on higher rates in the future), which banks compensate for with higher rates. However, this pattern doesn't necessarily hold today; the highest average CD rate is for a 12-month term. This indicates a flattening or inversion of the yield curve, which can happen in uncertain economic times or when investors expect future interest rates to decline. Read more: Short- or long-term CD: Which is best for you? When opening a CD, choosing one with a high APY is just one piece of the puzzle. There are other factors that can impact whether a particular CD is best for your needs and your overall return. Consider the following when choosing a CD: Your goals: Decide how long you're willing to lock away your funds. CDs come with fixed terms, and withdrawing your money before the term ends can result in penalties. Common terms range from a few months up to several years. The right term for you depends on when you anticipate needing access to your money. Type of financial institution: Rates can vary significantly among financial institutions. Don't just check with your current bank; research CD rates from online banks, local banks, and credit unions. Online banks, in particular, often offer higher interest rates than traditional brick-and-mortar banks because they have lower overhead costs. However, make sure any online bank you consider is FDIC-insured (or NCUA-insured for credit unions). Account terms: Beyond the interest rate, understand the terms of the CD, including the maturity date and withdrawal penalties. Also, check if there's a minimum deposit requirement and if so, that fits your budget. Inflation: While CDs can offer safe, fixed returns, they might not always keep pace with inflation, especially for longer terms. Consider this when deciding on the term and amount to invest.
