Sensex ends 455 points higher, Nifty settles above 25,000; Eternal tanks 5%

India Today26-05-2025

Benchmark indices closed Monday's session on a firm footing, buoyed by supportive global cues and domestic triggers. Investor sentiment improved after US President Donald Trump signalled a delay in imposing additional tariffs on the European Union, while encouraging signs on the monsoon and bond yields added fuel to the rally. The BSE Sensex ended 455.37 points higher at 82,176.45, while the NSE Nifty50 rose 148 points to close at 25,001.15. Broader markets also held firm, with continued momentum in mid-cap and small-cap stocks.advertisementAll sectoral indices ended in the green, with auto and IT stocks topping the gainers' list. The top five performers on the Nifty50 were Bajaj Auto, JSW Steel, M&M, Trent, and Hindalco. Lagging behind were Eternal, Ultratech Cement, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Power Grid, and NTPC.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, attributed the day's strength to a combination of constructive global signals and improving domestic fundamentals. 'The US decision to consider extending the deadline for imposing aggressive tariffs on EU, coupled with a decline in the dollar index, contributed to a rebound in the domestic equity markets," he said. "Additionally, the early onset of the southwest monsoon and a decline in domestic bond yields have encouraged investors to maintain their focus on riskier assets.'He added that expectations of stronger Q4 GDP data and improved rural consumption after a solid earnings season also supported the broader rally.advertisementAditya Gaggar, Director at Progressive Shares, pointed to technical factors that kept the Nifty's movement restricted. 'Despite a strong opening, the Index failed to build on the initial momentum and traded within a narrow range throughout the session, eventually ending at 25,001.15 with gains of 148 points,' he said. 'All the sectors closed in green, with Auto and IT leading the gains.'Gaggar added that while midcaps largely kept pace with the benchmark, smallcaps underperformed. He flagged the 24,930–25,060 zone as a key resistance band: 'A decisive close above this range is critical to sustain the ongoing upward momentum and open the door for a potential move towards the 25,200 mark. On the flip side, support has been shifted higher to 24,860.'As traders eye the next set of global cues and upcoming domestic data, market participants will be watching whether the rally sustains beyond the current technical thresholds.

4-Day Closed-Door Talks On India-US Trade Deal Conclude. What Was Discussed

New Delhi: Significant progress was made in the latest round of talks between India and the United States over a possible interim trade deal expected within weeks - one that aims to boost the annual bilateral trade between the two largest democracies from the current $190 billion to a whopping $500 billion by 2030. A team of top American negotiators held closed-door meetings with their Indian counterparts in New Delhi over four days, concluding on Tuesday. The talks primarily focused on greater market access for both industrial and agricultural products in either country, tariff cuts, and non-tariff barriers, people familiar with the matter said. While the US delegation was led by officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative, the Indian team of negotiators from the trade ministry was led by Rajesh Agrawal. "The negotiations held with the US side were productive and helped in making progress towards crafting a mutually beneficial and balanced agreement including through achievement of early wins," a government source told news agency Reuters. Boosting bilateral digital trade was reportedly another key focus area during the talks. A series of initiatives which will help improve customs and facilitation measures were discussed in detail, the source said, adding that both sides are looking to finalize an initial part of the comprehensive trade pact soon, and discussions will intensify in the days to come. THE NEGOTIATIONS In today's talks, India resisted US demands to open its markets to wheat, dairy, and corn imports, while offering lower tariffs on high-value US products such as almonds, pistachios and walnuts. India also asked the US to revoke its 10 per cent baseline tariff imposed by the Trump administration under a national emergency. But the US side opposed this, noting that even Britain was subject to this under its recent bilateral trade agreement. On steel, India asked for an exemption from Washington's move to impose 50 per cent tariffs. New Delhi also said that it would consider increasing import of American energy, like LNG, crude oil, and coal, while also purchasing defence equipment. AN INTERIM PACT LIKELY THIS MONTH? Both countries are aiming to sign an initial deal within the month of June, perhaps on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, when Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi will meet - though that less than a week from today. Amid rising criticism over his hasty trade decisions, Donald Trump is reportedly keen on signing a deal with India before the expiry of his 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, which includes a 26 per cent tariff on India - which would severely impact export of textiles, footwear, rice, and shrimp. However, while negotiators from the trade ministry were busy fine-tuning the trade deal with the US in New Delhi, the Union Minister, Piyush Goyal, was in Switzerland structuring another mega trade pact with the European Union - India's second-largest trading partner. On the India-US trade pact, Mr Goyal said India is prepared to proceed with a deal by first addressing simpler issues. Government officials added that the more complex matters could be negotiated in the next phase of talks, suggesting that India may agree to sign an interim deal. India is looking to sign the next tranche of the bilateral trade pact with United States by September or October, they said.

Equity MF net inflows dip to one-year low at ₹19,013 crore

Mumbai Net inflows into large cap mutual fund schemes halved to ₹1,250.4 crore in May, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). Mid cap schemes dipped 15.25% to ₹2,808.7 crore, while net inflows into small cap funds fell 20% to ₹3,214 crore in May 2025. The reduced inflows coincided with a three-month low monthly return in Nifty 50. The index was up just 1.7% by the end of May. This was 3.5% in April and 6.4% in March. This cooling down of returns comes at a time of increased volatility owing to tariff announcements and tensions between India and Pakistan, which may have created caution among investors, according to industry experts. 'Equity inflows moderated to ₹19,013 crore this month, reflecting cautious investor sentiment amidst market volatility,' said Venkat Chalasani, CEO, AMFI. SIPs remain flat Systematic Investment Plans' (SIP) contribution stayed more or less flat at ₹26,688 crore in May 2025. The number of contributing SIP accounts too stayed at 8.6 crore in May.
