Raducanu eased past Sakkari 6-4, 7-5 to win in straight sets, while Fernandez put it past Townsend in a 6-4, 7-6(4) triumph in the sweltering heat.
Emma Raducanu got the better of Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinal of the DC Open on Saturday to secure her spot in the semifinal of the event in Washington, while Leylah Fernandez also moved into the final-four of the WTA event with her win over Taylor Townsend.
Raducanu eased past Sakkari 6-4, 7-5 to win in straight sets, while Fernandez put it past Townsend in a 6-4, 7-6(4) triumph in the sweltering heat.
'It was one of the toughest matches conditions-wise I've ever played in," Raducanu said following the triumph.
'Those points in the second set, I was getting a bit wobbly I'm just happy I could close it out and it was two sets," she added.
'I think the humidity here, as well, it just makes it feel completely like you have just opened an oven and it just stayed open and your head is in there. That's how it feels," the Brit explained.
'When it's at that stage you know you're going to suffer and you have to just go until you physically can't anymore. It could be a little dangerous but you just leave it all out there on the court as an athlete," she averred.
'You get to a point where you're so tired that you don't really know what you're doing anymore, and I think maybe that helped," Raducanu said.
'I just really had to be smooth and conserve energy…. You just have to really be so focused," the 2021 US Open winner said.
'I have played three great matches to be here in the semifinals, and it is the first semis in a long time," she said.
'I'm really proud of that and just happy that all the hard work I've been doing is starting to pay off," Raducanu signed off.
Raducanu is slated to take on Anna Kalinskaya in the semis encounter with a place in the summit clash of the tune-up tournament to the Flushing Meadows up for grabs.

Amitabh Bachchan Mocks Ben Stokes After India Declines Draw In Manchester Test: ‘Gore Ko Tika Diya'

Amitabh Bachchan reacts to Ben Stokes' draw offer in Manchester Test. 'Gore ko tika diya' comment goes viral as India bats on for a heroic draw. Cricket met cinema in classic style when legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan chimed in on the now-viral moment from the Manchester Test, where England captain Ben Stokes offered a draw to India—only to be cheekily rejected by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. With just 15 overs left on the final day, India was well on its way to salvaging a draw and keeping the series alive. That's when Stokes extended an unexpected handshake—an offer to end the game early. But the Indian duo on the crease had other plans. They politely declined and continued batting. The moment triggered massive chatter online. On Monday, July 28, a social media post summarizing the incident—'Ben Stokes 🏴 offers a draw 🤝🏻 – India 🇮🇳 denies and continues to bat 🧐 – What's your take on this?"—caught the eye of Big B himself. And in true Amitabh Bachchan fashion, his response stole the show. 'Take !?? अरे गोरे को टिका (tika – sorry tayka) दिया रे." A blend of satire, wordplay, and swagger, his post instantly went viral. Fans flooded the comments, hailing Bachchan's sharp wit and national pride. Take !?? अरे गोरे को टिका (tika – sorry tayka diya ) दिया रे !!🤣 — Amitabh Bachchan (@SrBachchan) July 27, 2025 Drama On and Off the Field The Test match itself had its fair share of drama. After declining Stokes' offer, Jadeja stood tall with a gritty 107 not out, while Sundar remained unbeaten at 101, showcasing resilience and composure. The English camp, reportedly miffed by India's refusal to call it early, began delivering theatrical long hops—derisively known as 'donkey drops"—in what many perceived as passive-aggressive protest. Eventually, after both Indian batters reached their centuries, the teams shook hands, drawing the match in what had transformed from a sleepy finish to a surprisingly tense finale. What's Next for Big B? While Big B's commentary on cricket continues to entertain fans, the megastar remains just as busy on the silver screen. He will next be seen in Ribhu Dasgupta's legal thriller Section 84, co-starring Nimrat Kaur, Diana Penty, and Abhishek Banerjee. He also returns to two major franchises—Brahmāstra Part Two: Dev and the much-anticipated Kalki 2898 AD, continuing his streak of blockbuster roles across genres. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 17:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sanjay Manjrekar Slams Gautam Gambhir: 'Take A Chill Pill, Be Open To...'

Sanjay Manjrekar has asked Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir to 'take a chill pill'. Sanjay Manjrekar has asked Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir to 'take a chill pill' and 'relax' a bit over the latter's staunch comments against Shubman Gill in the aftermath of the Old Trafford Test. Manjreker even went on to say that all of India's success in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has not come because of Gambhir's tactics, but despite them, for the coach has made things difficult for the young side with his selections. India secured a fighting draw at Old Trafford after conceding a 311-run lead in the first innings and going down 0/2 in the second. Gill, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja all scored brilliant centuries. Soon after, Gambhir declared to media that anyone who had doubts over Gill didn't 'understand cricket'. Manjrekar being one who wanted Jasprit Bumrah to take over from Rohit Sharma instead of Gill, wasn't pleased. 'Yeah, you can tell there are certain questions that get under his skin – especially when people question Gill as a young captain and batter. And honestly, those are valid doubts. Even people who deeply understand cricket wonder whether this was the right time to hand him that opportunity. I just hope we can all understand this better," Manjrekar said, as quoted by PTI. 'It's not about 'you guys think' and 'we think' – we're all part of the same industry and the same country. I'd just like to see him take a chill pill, relax a bit, and be open to tough questions. Whether that will happen, I'm not sure," he added. Gambhir was also asked about Karun Nair being left out of the team for Sai Sudharsan, to which he said the team doesn't believe in 'dropping' players, and only selecting the 'best 11'. 'And to suggest that Karun Nair 'wasn't dropped'… come on. You guys see it as a drop; for them, it's about 'picking the right team'. If someone is dropped, he is dropped," Manjrekar said. India's fight is down to players, not Gambhir: Manjrekar For Manjrekar, the Old Trafford draw couldn't hide the fact that Gambhir had still won just four of his 14 Tests in charge. 'I feel India has done well despite some of his (Gambhir) tactical decisions. Let's not forget: India lost 3-0 at home (to) New Zealand, lost comfortably to Australia (away). The fight we've seen in this team? That's down to the players. Because tactically, Gambhir hasn't always made things easier – especially with some of his selections," he added. India go to the final Test with a chance to level the series 2-2. It'll begin on July 31 at the Oval, London. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 17:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Divya Deshmukh Creates History, Becomes 1st Chess Player In The World To...

Last Updated: India's 19-year-old Chess Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh became the first teenager to win the FIDE Women's World Cup, defeating Koneru Humpy 1.5-0.5 in tiebreaks. India's 19-year-old Chess Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh became the first-ever teenager to win the FIDE Women's World Cup by beating compatriot Koneru Humpy in tiebreaks on Monday (July 28). Divya defeated Humpy 1.5-0.5. The first Rapid game ended in a draw, and Divya secured a brilliant win with the Black pieces to win the match. She's also the first Indian to win the tournament. The tournament began in 2021 and the first title was clinched by Russia's Alexandra Kosteniuk, who was 37 years old at the time. The runner-up of the 2021 edition, Aleksandra Goryachkina, also from Russia, clinched the second season in 2023 but she, too, was 24 years old at the time of winning. 'Congratulations to @Divyadeshmukh05 on winning the World Cup. Becoming GM and a spot in the candidates. Amazing battle of nerves. @humpy_koneru played a very good event and showed a commendable fighting spirit . The great champion she is! It was a great celebration of Indian chess, particularly Women's chess," Viswanathan Anand wrote on X. Divya Deshmukh takes home GM title, $50,000 She joins her opponent on the day, Humpy, Dronavalli Harika, and R Vaishali. Divya's path to becoming a Grandmaster was not easy and took an atypical route, too. Usually, becoming a GM requires a player to win three GM norms and achieve a Standard (Classical) FIDE rating of 2500 or above. However, players can also do it by winning certain elite competitions, including the FIDE Women's World Cup. 'I need time to process it (win). I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way because before this (tournament) I didn't even have one (GM) norm, and now I am the Grandmaster," she said after the match. An emotional Deshmukh couldn't hold back her tears following the victory against an opponent twice her age. Deshmukh also secured a spot in next year's Candidates tournament, which will decide who will take on world champion Ju Wenjun of China in the Women's World Championship. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 16:44 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
