TDP completes 1 year in power, YSRCP marks ‘Betrayal Day'

Hindustan Times2 days ago

As the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh completed its one year in office on Wednesday, the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) termed the day as 'Betrayal Day'.
While the YSRCP observed 'Betrayal Day' by organising protests in different parts of the state, the TDP and its alliance partners – JanaSena Party (JSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — celebrated it as the 'End of Psycho Regime Day' by cutting cakes and distributing sweets in their respective party offices.
YSRCP state coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy told reporters that 'Betrayal Day' was a grand success, despite restrictions on taking out processions without permission and raising provocative slogans against the government, being imposed on the party workers as it reflected the ire of the people who felt cheated as none of the poll promises were implemented by the coalition government.
'The people are feeling cheated as the Chandrababu Naidu government has stopped existing welfare schemes and failed to roll out the schemes he had promised before the elections,' Reddy said.
He said that Wednesday's protest was only a mild reminder and the swell of support for the YSRCP in the coming days would spell the TDP's doom. 'Health, medical and agriculture sectors are being neglected by the coalition government. Naidu has downsized the number of beneficiaries of various existing schemes drastically,' he added.
Meanwhile, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu commemorated the first anniversary of his regime's accession on the social media platform X. He wrote, 'The day when dictators were swept away by the people's revolution.. The day the people drove away the madness that had been unleashed in the name of power... The end of the psycho regime...the day every citizen enjoys freedom and peace... The day when democracy was restored in the state by voting like a movement.'
'We are working every day considering the power given by the people a year ago as the responsibility of rebuilding the state,' he added.
'On the occasion of the completion of a year of the unilateral verdict given to change the direction of the state, I bow my head to the people and remember the victory of that time. We promise to undertake many more development and welfare programmes in the next 4 years,' he further said.
'The people's aspirations won a resounding victory over the anarchic and factional rule. This victory is the victory of five crore people,' Naidu's son and state IT minister Nara Lokesh said.
He said that the people's verdict further increased the responsibility of our alliance. 'With Naidu's experience in governance and Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's abundant blessings, the reconstruction of Andhra Pradesh has begun,' he asserted.
JSP president and deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan said that exactly a year ago, people of Andhra Pradesh pulled down five years of anarchic rule and feudal autocracy with the power of their vote, and heralded a new chapter in the protection of democracy.
'Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is guiding the nation along the path of development, and the seasoned political experience of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has stood resilient through decades of political turbulence, and with the enduring resolve of JanaSainiks, the people stood by us and delivered this historic victory,' he said.
Senior BJP leader and state health minister Y Satya Kumar also recalled the glorious victory the coalition had achieved in the assembly elections on this day last year. 'The coalition is here to stay for many more decades,' he said.

Law and order has collapsed in State, alleges Jagan Mohan Reddy

YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has slammed the NDA government for the 'collapse of law and order' in the State. Taking to X, Mr. Jagan said he was shocked and pained by the 'complete collapse of law and order' under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's governance. 'The systems have been rendered ineffective due to political vendettas and criminal actions of Mr. Naidu and his party leaders. The arrogance and rowdyism of the ruling party have created an atmosphere of fear, leaving no safety or security for people. The police machinery has been manipulated, leading to incidents that are shameful and alarming,' he alleged. 'In Srikalahasti, Tirupati district, when a constable issued a challan to the driver of the MLA's wife for driving under the influence of alcohol, the MLA had the same driver assault the constable in the presence of the Circle Inspector. Instead of taking action, the police tried to hush it up. If a policeman has no protection, how can we expect ordinary citizens to feel safe?' he asked. In YSR Kadapa district's Khajipeta mandal, YSRCP activist Reddy Shiva Lakshminarayana was falsely charged with possessing ganja for refusing to pay a bribe, beaten, and jailed for two months, he alleged. 'Unable to bear the humiliation, he took his own life, leaving his 10-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter destitute,' he added. 'What action is being taken against those who drove him to such a tragic end?' he questioned. In Kurnool district's Orvakallu mandal, a former MPTC member Ramesh Naidu was murdered allegedly by TDP activists. 'Is this the fate of those who work democratically for the people?' he asked. Equally horrific was the alleged assault on a 9th grade Dalit girl at Edu Gurrakulapalli village in Sri Sathya Sai district. 'TDP activists intimidated her family, stopped them from filing a complaint,' Mr. Jagan alleged. The family was forced to flee the village while the police stood as spectators, he alleged. 'These incidents are not isolated. They show a system where law is mocked, justice is denied, and the accused, shielded by the ruling party, walk free. I warn Mr. Naidu that people will not stay silent forever,' he said.

Expedite Polavaram-Banakacharla project works: CM

Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed officials to call tenders for the Polavaram-Banakacharla project by the end of June while ensuring that forest and environmental clearances, DPR approval, and other processes are completed on time for land acquisition. The project is likely to be undertaken in a hybrid annuity model (HAM). The Polavaram-Banakacharla linkage project is being constructed under the Jalharathi Corporation, and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) has already been set up for the purpose. The state has sent proposals to the central govt seeking financial resources for the project. Of the total project cost of Rs 81,900 crore, 50% or Rs 40,950 crore will be obtained as EAP loans. Additionally, 20% of the funds or Rs 16,380 crore is to be sourced as central grant, 10% or Rs 8,190 crore as state govt equity, and another 20% or Rs 16,380 crore under HAM. In a review meeting with irrigation dept officials, Naidu instructed them to take immediate steps to commence crop cultivation in Krishna and Godavari deltas. He suggested altering the cultivation period so that crops can be harvested before the cyclone season. Expressing dissatisfaction over non-functional piezometers and AWS sensors in some areas of the state, he ordered the release of Rs 30 crore for purchasing new equipments. He asked officials to gather details of areas with groundwater levels below 20 meters and between 8-20 meters and release separate bulletins by basins, districts, and central-local levels. "Measures should be taken to increase the average groundwater levels in the state. Consider using Sileru water in Krishna delta," he suggested. The CM was informed that 82% of civil construction works of Polavaram project have been completed. Less than 4% of works were done in five years during the previous govt's tenure, whereas 6% of works have been completed in 11 months after the coalition govt came to power in 2024. The diaphragm wall is 64% complete, buttress dam is 91% complete, and vibro compaction works for sand consolidation are 54% complete. The diaphragm wall construction is expected to be completed by the end of Dec, officials said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
