
Titanic Survivor's Letter, Written Aboard the Ship, Sells for Nearly $400,000
Days before the Titanic struck an iceberg, a first-class passenger, Col. Archibald Gracie, described the vessel in a letter written while on board: 'It is a fine ship but I shall await my journey's end before I pass judgment on her.'
Colonel Gracie's journey on the Titanic had a catastrophic end, but he fared better than most.
He was on the top deck of the ship, gripping a railing, as it plunged into the sea. He said he was 'swirled' under water before he got to a raft, where he spent hours floating on icy waters before being rescued.
The letter he wrote was sold on Saturday at an auction for $399,000 (or 300,000 pounds), according to Henry Aldridge and Son, an auction house in Wiltshire, England.
The auction house said the letter, written in neat, cursive handwriting, was addressed to an unidentified European ambassador, the great-uncle of the seller. The letterhead shows a triangular red flag with a white star and is printed with the words 'On board R.M.S. Titanic.'
The letter was dated April 10, 1912, the day the ship set sail from Southampton, England. On April 12, it was postmarked in London, where it was received at the Waldorf Hotel. The Titanic struck an iceberg just before midnight on April 14 and sank the next day.
The buyer of the letter was based in the United States, according to Andrew Aldridge, the managing director of Henry Aldridge and Son. The auction house did not publicly identify the buyer or the seller.
Mr. Aldridge said in an email that the stories of the ship's passengers 'are told through the memorabilia' and that 'their memories are kept alive through those items.'
The auction house had initially expected the letter to sell for up to 60,000 pounds, or nearly $80,000.
Colonel Gracie, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, was a high-profile survivor of the Titanic disaster, in which about 1,500 people perished.
He died eight months later, in December 1912, of complications from diseases, but his doctors and his family said that the real cause was that he had never recovered from the shock of the Titanic disaster, according to The New York Times.
After Colonel Gracie was rescued, he began work on 'The Truth About the Titanic,' a book about his experience that was published posthumously. The New York Times review of the book said 'there is something effective in the very lack of directness and coherency in the narrative.'
Colonel Gracie said in an interview with The New York Tribune that he had been on the top deck of the ship when it was hit by a wave that sent other people overboard. He managed to stay on and grabbed a brass railing.
'When the ship plunged down, I was forced to let go, and I was swirled around and around for what seemed an interminable time,' he said. 'Eventually I came to the surface to find the sea a mass of tangled wreckage.'
He said he grabbed a wooden grating and then saw a canvas-and-cork raft. He made it onto the raft and began trying to rescue others. They eventually reached a rescue ship, R.M.S. Carpathia.
'The hours that elapsed before we were picked up by the Carpathia were the longest and most terrible that I ever spent,' Colonel Gracie said, according to The Tribune. 'Practically without any sensation of feeling because of the icy water, we were almost dropping from fatigue.'
Colonel Gracie was an established figure in New York and Washington society.
His father had been an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Colonel Gracie was also a descendant of Archibald Gracie, who built the New York City mayor's official residence, Gracie Mansion, in 1799.
After news of the Titanic's sinking reached the United States, and it was not known whether Colonel Gracie had survived, his wife, Constance Schack Gracie, was reported missing for unrelated reasons.
Mrs. Gracie had not been on the ship, but had left town to avoid being subpoenaed in the lunacy trial of another society woman, Mary E. Gage, according to The New York Times.
In the days after the Titanic disaster, the Gracies' daughter, Edith Gracie, was asked about the whereabouts of her mother, which she said she did not know, and about the fate of her father, The Times reported.
She said Colonel Gracie had been in Europe recuperating from an operation and had said in a letter that he would return home with a much stronger constitution.
'It is too terrible to think of,' she said, 'but I am hoping against hope that he has come through the perils of the accident without harm.'

EDITORIAL: A reason to keep honoring
Jun. 6—Thursday was the anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in World War II that turned the tide of the European conflict toward the favor of the allies. Friday was another opportunity to not only remember one of the most pivotal battles of the war, but to honor the soldiers who hit the beaches that day along the Normandy coast and those that gave their lives. It was display of bravery that will be etched in the annals of history and requires us, as on-lookers, to acknowledge each year that bloody assault on June 6, 1944. The reality is that for many soldiers still alive who served during World War II this may well be the last D-Day they see. The world is losing our World War II veterans, an inevitability for us all in the march of time. While it's important that we honor all of those — men and women — who served, fought and died in defense of our nation while they live with us today, it will remain on us to continue to remember these people after their time on this planet has come to an end. They have done what many of us would not or could not do. They've marched into the worst conditions and came out the other side, while still others never saw past that day. This is a sacrifice of life and the least we can do is remember that sacrifice going forward. We owe it to these brave souls to remember not just their deeds, but their names. We are able to enjoy freedom in France, England, here at home and around the globe because men women of valor stood up and said "I'll go." When the soldiers of World War II — as in any conflict — are all gone, we will look back and know with pride that we are who we are because of them and that comes with no less a burden today as it was in the entirety of this nation. That's why, as time moves on, days like the D-Day anniversary become increasingly important because these men and women need to know our gratitude while they are still here with us. And if they are not, then those days stand as stark reminders that the freedom and rights we enjoy today are based on the soldiers who stood up to evil.

Two years since OceanGate's Titan sub imploded — killing five people — and a fuller picture is now emerging about what really happened before and during tragedy "The emperor had no clothes when I arrived," former employee David Lochridge says of working with OeanGate co-founder Stockton Rush The company tells PEOPLE in a statement: "We again offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who died"David Lochridge doesn't mince words when it comes to describing his time working for Stockton Rush at the experimental diving company OceanGate, which eventually launched a doomed quest down to the Titanic in 2023 — and five people died. 'I didn't realize that they were so good at cutting corners until I actually got across there,' Lochridge tells PEOPLE in a new interview, marking one of the fist times he is speaking publicly. In the two years since OceanGate's Titan sub imploded — killing Rush, the company's co-founder, and four passengers — a fuller picture is now emerging about what really happened before and during tragedy. The U.S. Coast Guard is preparing to release a final report, after lengthy investigation. Some of those close to Rush and the victims, like Lochridge, are also speaking out, including in Netflix's new documentary Titan: The Oceangate Disaster, which premieres on Wednesday, June 11. Lochridge also appeared on the Today show on Friday, June 6. A former diver in the U.K.'s Royal Navy, he worked as OceanGate's operations director until early 2018 and says he was closely involved in the training and preparation for what the company promised to potential explorers (for a hefty fee): trips to wondrous undersea artifacts like the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Canada. "The company needed a lot of I would say my experience put into it to be able to create this competent team, to be able to actually go out and perform this job that they wanted me to do,' Lochridge says. But 'the emperor had no clothes when I arrived." "I'll never forget this. It was Day 1 [working at OceanGate in 2016]. We landed. … Stockton, I think he was at home or at [the lab], and he stated that the new submersible Titan would not be having any underwater communications in it,' Lochridge recalls. 'I honestly thought he was joking,' he says of Rush, 'but he was deadly serious.' In the roughly two years that Lochridge was a top official at OceanGate, 'I was always met with a lot of resistance,' he says. 'But at the same time, I had to watch what I was doing. I was the new boy in the company.' He says safety warnings included more than an initial lack of concern over underwater communication. Lochridge cites the monitoring system for the Titan's novel carbon fiber hull — the same system that showed eerie cracking noises. 'If I had heard noises like that in a sub, I would never go on it again,' Lochridge says. 'Nobody would ever go on it again.' He also says some of the glue used to put components together was applied merely with spatulas. 'There was nobody there verifying that there were no voids,' he says. 'And it's like somebody putting icing on a birthday cake.' Amid the scrutiny and criticism from people like Lochridge, however, Rush and OceanGate do have defenders for the work they were attempting. "And Stockton took some risk and lived outside the box and paid for it with his life."
