It's happening here: when book bans hit home

If you're a reader, a student of history, or a writer, it's been appalling to watch book bans proliferate across the nation. As The Reformer reported last month, St. Francis High School and Independent School District 15 recently adopted a policy that defers to Booklooks, a website linked to the far-right group Moms for Liberty when evaluating which books to purchase or pull from shelves.
The result: Hundreds of books are now either banned outright or will likely be pulled from shelves in the near future; this includes classics like The Handmaid's Tale, The Bluest Eye, and soon, perhaps the likes of 'Night' by Elie Wiesel and 'Slaughterhouse Five' by Kurt Vonnegut and hundreds of others.
I graduated from St. Francis High School in 2001. I owe much of my career as a writer — I've written ten books and edited many more — to one of the soon-to-banned books. It was 'Slaughterhouse Five.' It was the year 2000. Frosted tips and Billabong shirts were everywhere. I picked up the book from a spinner in my journalism class. (That teacher was the best teacher I ever had.) I absorbed it, and I proceeded to read every other book by Vonnegut on the spinner, and then Ray Bradbury; soon I was reading Sylvia Plath and Richard Wright. A good book is a springboard to others; the best books lead to a lifetime of a reading.
Rather than trot out generic arguments about why book bans are ill-advised, I want to talk about 'Slaughterhouse Five.' It's a fictionalized story, that like all truly great fiction, is, at its heart, true. Vonnegut was a G.I. in World War II. He was in the 106th Infantry Division and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. To put that another way: The St. Francis school board wants to ban a novel written by an American serviceman and a member of the Greatest Generation.
Vonnegut was forced to do manual labor in Dresden, and he survived the firebombing of the city in February 1945 by the Royal Air Force and the U.S. 8th Air Force. The resulting firestorm killed perhaps 35,000 people. 'Slaughterhouse Five' is superficially science fiction, but it's really about the insanity of war, the absurdity of surviving one, and more than anything, PTSD. Vonnegut's writing will last forever because he's irreverent, funny, and accessible, but he's also honest and fundamentally decent.
That's why Vonnegut appeals to younger readers; kids aren't just picky eaters; they are picky readers. You have to meet them where they are in terms of attitude, interest, and style. By removing some of the most popular books among young people — classics and newer books alike — the district is depriving students of great books but also the love of reading and learning itself.
And as a rule, if you're banning books, you're afraid of ideas: The Soviets were afraid of capitalism, religion, and freedom of speech. The Nazis loathed the Jews, 'inferior' races, modernism in all its forms, and were racist to their core. The Inquisition banned or targeted works by Copernicus and Galileo and Giordano Bruno because they feared their monopoly on cosmology was at an end. The ideas that Booklooks, and by extension, The St. Francis School Board, fear are plain. Even the most cursory look at its anonymous 'ratings' (available on Internet Archive) shows that the books it targets are by or about women, LGBTQ folks, Black and brown folks, or people who have a 'different' point of view. Like any attempt at censorship, it's an exercise in erasure.
But I can promise you this: It won't work. As the packed school board meetings, recent student protests, and a pair of newly filed lawsuits against the district make clear, people care about the freedom to read, the First Amendment, and the books and characters they love.
This misguided policy has already been an expensive debacle, and the district has made statewide news in the most embarrassing way. If the policy remains in force, it will continue to hurt the district's own students by depriving them of great works of art, and worse, giving them an incomplete, myopic view of the world.

A celebration of Canadian women in entertainment, some of the country's most beloved talents were in Toronto for the The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada awards on Thursday night. Among the award recipients were Amrit Kaur, Jeanne Beker, Margaret Atwood and Tantoo Cardinal. Several of the women who accepted awards didn't just reference Canada's entertainment industry. They also spoke about escalating tensions between Canada and the U.S. "When [The Handmaid's Tale] came out, a certain number of people felt I was a lunatic, because surely the United States would never, ever do such things," Atwood said while accepting the Icon Award. "I'm sure we all wish the H.M.T. was more fictional and less of a docudrama drama. Will we all look back and say, 'Remember how scary that show was back then?' Or will we be unable to say anything at all, because we will have been censored out of existence. Meanwhile, we live in hope." When Jeanne Beker accepted the Impact Award, she spoke about how she was able to build her career in Canada, and not move to the U.S. "You do not have to move to the States to make it, you might have to move to the States to make more money," Beker said. "Things have changed so much. ... When I was rising up through the ranks in the '80s, there were not a lot of powerful women around. ... Women were kind of jealous of each other. It almost felt like, and certainly in this country, that there are only so many pieces of pie to go around." "There was an intense competition. I felt it and I felt threatened by women, I'm sorry to say, some beautiful, wonderful women. We were all just fighting to hang on to what we worked so hard for, to what we aspired to. And I have to say that slowly, but surely, over the decades, things started to change in the most amazing way. And an older woman didn't have to be threatened by a younger woman anymore. Quite the opposite." You do not have to move to the States to make it, you might have to move to the States to make more money. Amrit Kaur began her speech for the Breakthrough Award speaking about how inspired she was by Deepa Mehta's 1996 film Fire. "It was the first time I saw two women in a romantic relationship that were Indian women," Kaur said. "It was un-glamorized. It was raw. It was real. It was me. That bravery in telling the truth by the production, the artist, the director, that came out in Canada, is the reason I'm an actress." "I don't think our talents should have to go to America to break through. I think we can find more art like Fire. There are a lot of wonderful women in this room and that is so f—king rare. A lot of women decision makers, and I want you to take more chances, more risks. Women have intuition. We're not scared of the truth the way men are. We understand the human condition. We've dealt with oppression. We don't take no for an answer." Kaur also made a call for action to stop being so "polite." "I want you guys to fund art that fuels our fire as women, as humanitarians and as artists," she said. "Art that's ugly, art that's uncomfortable. But in order to do that, we have to stop being so polite." "Art isn't always polite. Art isn't always good. And as Canadians, we're so caught up in being good, we forget to be human. But I know as women, we can change that, because women know the pretence of being nice. We know the pretence of smiling, because behind every smile is a goddamn raging story." Tantoo Cardinal, who received the Equity in Entertainment Award, spoke about growing up as an Indigenous person in Canada. "I was born right into that world where people were breathing just really short breaths," Cardinal said. "There was no pride in who we were. There was shame in who we were. People who spoke the language were ridiculed." "You put the kids in school for generations and generations, and make them ashamed of who they are. ... My people have been forged in the fire and the smouldering embers of genocide. And we were not allowed to speak until the Truth and Reconciliation Commission revealed it in their findings. ... I came from a powerful people. Our history will tell you we found truth in our survival of atrocities in the marrow of the children that did survive, touched by the spirits of those who did not. ... Stories are part of the sacredness of life. We still have so many stories to change so that we might walk in balance in this new world we're creating," she said. "We must be allies. We must honour each other's truth and trust us to tell our own stories."

Margaret Atwood calls Canada-U.S. tensions ‘most direct threat since the War of 1812'
TORONTO - Margaret Atwood says it feels 'very weird' to see reality mirror 'The Handmaid's Tale' as the dystopian series comes to an end. The show, adapted from the Canadian author's 1985 novel and filmed largely in and around Toronto, aired its final episode on Crave this week. Starring Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne — a woman forced into reproductive servitude under a brutal theocratic regime — 'The Handmaid's Tale' is set in a totalitarian society that strips women of their rights and autonomy. Since its debut, the series has often felt reflective of real-world politics, especially during Donald Trump's presidency. It premièred amid a growing cultural reckoning over reproductive rights and authoritarian rhetoric, and its imagery even bled into protest movements — with women's rights activists donning red robes and white bonnets based on the show's costume design. 'That's uncanny. Trump won the first time in 2016 when we were in the middle of shooting Season 1, and we all woke up the next day and said, 'We're in a different series,'' Atwood said in Toronto on Thursday while in town to receive an honour at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Canada Awards. Although the script hadn't changed, she said, 'the frame changed, and people viewed it way differently than they would have if Hillary Clinton had won. If she'd won, it would've been, 'We missed the bullet.' But when he won, people were going, 'Here it comes.'' With Trump now back in office, Atwood reflected on the series' conclusion and the strange timing: 'It's very weird. But we'll be launching 'The Testaments' Season 1 in less than a year, and that's weird too,' she said, referring to the Hulu sequel series based on Atwood's 2019 novel. ''The Testaments' takes place after 'The Handmaid's Tale,' when a resistance is already building. As they do.' That sense of resistance also applies to the current political tension between Canada and the U.S., as growing anxieties over trade disputes and cultural sovereignty are bubbling to the surface — and, in Atwood's view, reaching a level of urgency not seen in decades. 'I've seen that movie a couple of times, but under different circumstances,' she says. 'I think this is the most direct threat we've had since the War of 1812.' The author notes Canada's had a renewed spirit of patriotism she hasn't witnessed in years. 'I know there's a degree of 'yay Canada' that I haven't seen since the 1980s. So it's very interesting for me, and quite new for a lot of young people. They're probably thinking, 'What just happened? What's going on? Is this real?' Still, she says, Canadians shouldn't panic just yet. 'To cheer you up, the States and Canada are both members of (NATO),' she says, explaining that if the U.S. took any hostile action it would first have to exit the alliance, which would then have to defend Canada. 'So how much of a world war do you want to get into?' And while some Canadians are calling for homegrown artists to step up amid rising calls for cultural protectionism, Atwood believes true artistic expression can't be forced. 'You can't order artists to do anything, and if you are ordering them and they're obeying you, they're just propaganda tools,' she says. 'So let the artists rip, they'll make their own decisions, they will create their own things, and then you can decide what you think about them.' Ultimately, Atwood has cautious optimism about the public's ability to recognize warning signs before dystopian fiction becomes lived reality. How ‘The Handmaid's Tale' series finale sets up ‘The Testaments'
With the Emmy-winning adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale wrapping up the six-season arc of the revolutionary June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), fans can finally celebrate Boston's liberation from the authoritarian clutches of Gilead. It's been a harrowing journey for June since the show's 2017 premiere, and she can't entirely celebrate with her daughter Hannah still behind Gilead's borders. With Hulu hard at work on The Testaments, an adaptation of Atwood's 2019 sequel novel set years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, audiences will get a greater degree of resolution over the future of Hannah and the rest of the women under Gilead's thumb. Here's how The Handmaid's Tale's Season 6 resolution sets up for that highly anticipated follow-up. At the conclusion of The Handmaid's Tale, the resistance group Mayday (in collaboration with the U.S. military) successfully killed remaining Gilead leaders in Boston, thanks to the sacrifice of Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). Janine (Madeline Brewer) was reunited with her daughter Charlotte after being brought to a now-freed Boston by a fully reformed Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and her former mistress, Naomi Lawrence (Ever Carradine). June was shepherded to the reunion by the U.S. military, and witnessing it solidified her choice to continue the fight against Gilead. She hopes to make her way towards Colorado to free her oldest daughter, Hannah. The very final scenes see June return to the old Waterford home to write a book about her experiences in Gilead (the beginning page of Atwood's original novel). It follows a new generation of young women raised within a Gilead that's been rocked, but not yet toppled, by that ending we saw in Season 6. In the novel, main character Aunt Lydia has remained an Aunt under Gilead's rule. Her hero turn still stands, and in the novel she feeds information to the United States while secretly completing a memoir that opposed Gilead's beliefs. Dowd will return as Aunt Lydia in The Testaments. An older Hannah (Chase Infiniti), living as Agnes, moves to become an Aunt (named Victoria) in order to escape an arranged marriage. Having forgotten her origins, she discovers her heritage as a revolutionary handmaid's daughter, and also discovers her secret half-sister, Nicole (also known as Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday). Lydia and the pair of sisters work to expose Gilead's darkest secrets. Moss will serve as an executive producer on The Testaments alongside Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield, Mike Barker, who will direct its first three episodes, but she is not yet confirmed to return. June does appear in the novel, and the series could also take liberties to include her more or showcase her actions within the four years between the two series. Regarding expectations for June to pop up and take the fight to Colorado, Miller told Gold Derby, "The Testaments is so much about another group of characters in general. And although June has a big stake in it, part of the story is her impotence to do anything about it." He promises that "some of these people [from The Handmaid's Tale] will pop up again because, in addition to Lydia, there's a lot of people who play roles in this world that would brush up against the story of The Testaments." Hulu has yet to announce a premiere date. The show is currently in production.
