‘Sanju Samson right replacement for MS Dhoni in CSK, he's quite popular in Chennai', says Kris Srikkanth

Indian Express2 days ago
The Sanju Samson IPL trade/transfer talks have gained a lot of chatter in the IPL circles since the end of a tepid 2025 season for the Rajasthan Royals where the skipper had a nominal role to play due to a couple of injury lay-offs. In Samson's absence, the Royals seemed to have found an explosive left-handed pairing in young Yashasvi Jaiswal and the prodigious Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Reacting to the rumours doing the rounds that have tied Samson and the Chennai Super Kings, former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth referred to the potential union as the perfect way to replace their talismanic leader, MS Dhoni.
Srikkanth, however, ceded that the Rajasthan Royals must find a way to retain Samson after having started a fresh Mega Auction cycle earlier this year with the team built around the Kerala star. Samson and Jaiswal were Rajasthan's top retentions ahead of the auctions held in 2024, at Rs 18 crore.
'Going by the reports, there seems to be a rift between him and Rahul Dravid, but I am not fully aware,' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. 'Look at it from a franchise point of view. They have paid him a certain amount and retained him. They have formed the team around him. All of a sudden, if you release him, what happens to the team balance? They haven't won the IPL since 2008.
'They have reached the final after that (in 2022). I don't think I would let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He's been paid INR 18 crore,' Srikkanth added.
Srikkanth referred to Samson's huge popularity in Chennai and his speciality as a keeper-batter-cum leader that makes him an able fit for the 44-year-old Dhoni who is in the final laps of his IPL playing career.
'To tell you the truth, Sanju is a brilliant player and he's very popular in Chennai. He's got a good brand image in Chennai. As I said, I'll be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,' said Srikkanth. 'He's the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with,' he added.

‘Let it begin': Rohit Sharma working with Abhishek Nayar with Australia ODIs on the horizon

Just days after Virat Kohli posted a photo of himself after a training session, fellow India veteran Rohit Sharma has also posted a picture of himself with former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in the gym. Nayar reposted that with the caption that said: 'Let it begin'. According to PTI, Rohit has begun training with Nayar at a suburban Mumbai facility after taking a break of a couple of months from cricket following the IPL. Rohit retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup last year and then from Tests during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). This has left ODIs as the only format in which he plays international cricket and India next play one only in October when they tour Australia. Kohli has also retired from T20Is and Tests and this has led to a lot of specuation around his and Rohit's future with the Indian ODI team. Nayar was sacked as India's assistant coach in April this year after India's dismal run of form in Tests. Rohit is known to work with him on occassion personally and Nayar remains a reputed batting coach. KL Rahul had worked with Nayar prior to the recently concluded five-match Test series in England, in which he ended up scoring 532 runs. Considered one of the greatest opening batters of all time, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.76 with 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries. He is the only batter to have scored three double centuries in men's ODIs and his 264 remains the highest-ever score by any player in the format. Rohit had led a dominant India to the final of the 2023 World Cup. However, while they were hardly challenged by any team throughout the tournament, India were thoroughly outplayed by Australia in the final and lost by six wickets, a result that Rohit admitted in later months took a big toll on him mentally and emotionally.

Madras HC orders trial in MS Dhoni's ₹100 crore defamation case

Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to record his statement following the Madras High Court ordered a trial in a ₹ 100 crore defamation case filed by him against two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist, who dragged his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal, reported The Hindu. The report added that Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed an advocate commissioner who will record the evidence on behalf of Dhoni. This decision is based on the fact that MS Dhoni is a celebrity, and his presence could lead to chaos. Earlier in 2014, Dhoni filed a case and sought damages of ₹ 100 crore from the defendants – two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist. Dhoni had alleged that defamatory remarks were made against him during a Television debate on the IPL betting scandal. Senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial, reported The Hindu, adding it is pending for a decade. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," The Hindu quoted the affidavit as reading. The betting scandal of 2013 in the Indian Premier League is considered to be a major blot in the T20 league's history. In the scandal, three cricketers were found guilty of having indulged in spot fixing while two franchises – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals – were suspended for two years.

Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium may lose Women's World Cup matches

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru could lose hosting rights for the 2025 Women's Cricket World Cup, which commences next month. It is understood that the Bengaluru city police denied permission for the same. This comes after the Justice (Retd.) Michael D'Cunha Commission report stated that the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was not fit to host big-ticket events. The commission, set up by the Karnataka government, inquired into the June 4 stampede outside the stadium that caused 11 deaths during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title-winning celebrations. The stadium was scheduled to host four 2025 Women's CWC matches. This included the tournament opener (on September 30) – featuring the Indian team – two league outings, and the second semifinal. Only a few days ago, it was announced that all Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament matches would be shifted from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Mysuru. This decision was reportedly taken after the police denied permission. While India has hosted Women's CWC in 1978, 1997 and 2013, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has featured in only one game (in 1997). In the same edition, the Gangotri Glades Stadium in then Mysore hosted one league match between Pakistan and Denmark.
