Jio's self-built 5G stack draws global attention

Time of India2 days ago
A senior executive of
Reliance Industries
said the self-developed end-to-end 5G stack of
Reliance Jio
, the conglomerate's telecom arm, is gaining recognition globally and is a potential monetisable opportunity.
'It (Jio) is one of the leading deep tech companies in India with enormous amounts of innovation and technology development that we have done over the years,' Anshuman Thakur, senior vice president, Reliance Industries, said at the company's earnings call on Friday.

Reliance Jio is an unlisted subsidiary of Jio Platforms, which holds Reliance Industries' telecom and digital businesses.
'Today this technology, this tech stack, the entire value chain, the whole software, hardware stack is only available with us and has been deployed at scale,' Thakur said. 'All the global operators are looking at us to see how we have done this so successfully. And then a whole bunch of initiatives on AI.'
The latest addition to the telecom tech stack is the multi-point
UBR technology
for home connections, which global telcos have tried to replicate but failed, he said.
UBR enables multiple home connections through a single 5G cell site targeting 50%-60% homes within a micro-cluster using a single transmission tower, bringing down deployment costs.
'We are the first to deploy UBR for UBR-based connectivity at scale. This is a technology that operators worldwide have tried to work on and have not had much success,' he said.
UBR is the innovation child of
Mimosa Networks
, the US-based communications equipment maker which Jio Platforms acquired for $60 million through its wholly owned subsidiary Radisys Corporation in August 2023.
Majority of Jio's UBR equipment are manufactured by US-based Sanmina Corporation, which has a joint venture with Reliance Industries in India.
During the June quarter, Jio crossed the milestone of 20 million home connections, 7.4 million of which were AirFiber FWA (fixed wireless access) connections scaled with UBR tech. The telco now has 82% market share in 5G FWA connections in India.
Analysts are bullish on Jio's strong customer additions and cost benefits from technology ownership after Q1 and have raised Jio's enterprise valuation.
'Jio's 5G tech stack, core, software, hardware and BSS/OSS are all in-house and proprietary,' brokerage firm
IIFL Securities
said in a report. 'This enables quicker revenue ramp-up due to lower dependence of vendors, lower costs due to licence fee savings, customisation/scale-up of configuration based on requirements, and potential monetisation by selling to global telcos.'
IIFL has raised Jio's valuation to $134.2 billion (Rs11.2 lakh crore) from $133.9 billion it had said earlier.
Equity research firm Jefferies also raised its revenue estimates by 1-4% to factor in the changes to subscriber assumptions and lower access/network costs.
'We believe RJio remains well-placed to deliver 18%/22% CAGR in revenues/EBITDA over FY25-28, given rising tariffs in mobile and scaleup of
home broadband business
. We raise our EV (enterprise valuation) for Jio to US $146 billion (Rs 12.19 lakh crore) on the EBITDA upgrade and roll-over to Jun-27,' Jefferies said in a report.
Jio also holds the highest number of patents on 6G.
Jio Cloud
, launched last year, offering 100GB free cloud storage, now has 35 million consumers, Thakur said during the call.
On Monday, rival telecom operator
Bharti Airtel
's shares ended 0.4% higher on the BSE at Rs 1,908.75, giving it a market cap of more than Rs 10.88 lakh crore.

Dynamic Cables' Q1 net profit drops 22.75 pc to Rs 18.2 crore; revenue falls nearly 21 pc

Mumbai: Jaipur-based Dynamic Cables Limited on Wednesday reported a decline in its financial performance for the first quarter (Q1) of FY26, with net profit falling by 22.75 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) to Rs 18.2 crore, compared to Rs 23.56 crore in the previous quarter (Q4 FY25). The company also saw its revenue from operations drop by 20.88 per cent, standing at Rs 262.03 crore in Q1, down from Rs 331.17 crore in Q4 FY25, according to its stock exchange filing. Total income for the quarter came in at Rs 264.77 crore, showing a decline of 20.39 per cent QoQ. On the expenses side, the company recorded Rs 240.4 crore in total expenses in Q1, a decrease of 20.37 per cent from Rs 301.9 crore in the previous quarter, the company stated in its regulatory filing. The company's total expenses included Rs 233.3 crore towards cost of materials consumed, Rs 10.01 crore on employee benefits, Rs 2.66 crore in finance costs, Rs 2.65 crore in depreciation and amortisation, and Rs 13.82 crore under other expenses. As of June 30, Dynamic Cables' order book stood at approximately Rs 734 crore, a significant rise from Rs 468 crore a year earlier. The company said this growth was largely driven by strong demand in the power utilities/EPC, export, and renewable energy segments. Dynamic Cables' Managing Director, Ashish Mangal, attributed this to strong domestic demand from both government and private sector projects in power distribution and renewable energy, along with consistent export contributions of around 10 per cent, even amid geopolitical challenges. He expressed optimism for the upcoming quarters, saying the company is well-positioned to capitalise on growth opportunities thanks to supportive policies and increased infrastructure investments. 'With a robust order book, a clear growth roadmap, and a strong emphasis on execution, we are confident in our ability to maintain this momentum and create long-term value for all stakeholders,' Mangal added. Dynamic Cables Limited manufactures a wide range of power infrastructure cables including low voltage, medium voltage, high voltage, control, instrumentation, and signalling cables. It supplies to government discoms, private utilities, EPC contractors, industrial clients, and exports markets. The company operates three manufacturing units in Jaipur and Reengus, with its corporate office and five regional sales offices based across India.

Ola, Uber & Rapido told to justify rates; RTA-approved fares to pinch pocket

The transport commissioner 's office on Tuesday directed Ola , Uber and Rapido to submit a written explanation on how they determine fares as Indian Gig Workers' Front continued a pause on the strike of app-based cabs , which was going to be resumed on Wednesday. Additional transport commissioner Bharat Kalaskar said, "We had two meetings on Tuesday with firm officials and union leaders. After discussions, we decided that Ola, Uber, and Rapido should provide us with a written explanation on how they determine the app-based fares for cabs and autorickshaws in various cities, and how much they differ from the RTO-approved rates." The demand for high fares has been the reason for agitation by hundreds of drivers across the state. Kalaskar said he has asked the aggregator company if any drivers' IDs have been blocked lately for charging at RTA-approved rates, those IDs should be reactivated. In Pune, the RTA approved fares stand at Rs. 75 for the first 3km and then Rs 25 for every subsequent km. If RTA-approved fare system, as assured by the state transport department, comes into effect, a 10km cab ride for people would cost at least Rs 249.50. At present, the average cab fare (non-surge) for the same distance is around Rs 175 for a basic Uber ride (Uber Go). Commuters blamed the Pune RTO for letting the issue escalate. "They should have acted when this whole issue started. But they hid under the garb that commuters would be affected if they took action. Aren't we facing the problems now?" Kalpana Seth, a bank employee from Kondhwa, said. Maharashtra Kamgar Sena president Keshav Kshirsagar said: "The (state transport department) officials have assured us Ola, Uber and Rapido will give a written assurance to the department on Wednesday on introducing RTA-based fares on their platforms. In the application they will also mention the date from which the RTA-approved fares will get reflected." Prashant Sawardekar, president of the Indian Federation of App-Based Transporters , said, "The transport officials informed us on Tuesday that govt will soon come out with a new policy, which will define the fares for app-based cabs. But we are against this state policy, as Centre has issued guidelines that are completely different. The central guidelines for aggregators mention that the surge price for cabs can go up to 50% of the base fare (which is up to Rs 48 per km). This is not part of the state draft policy." Sushmita Ghosh took to X on Tuesday and posted, "...New airport has all possible inconveniences. The drivers are accepting rides from tired and frustrated travellers, but upon arrival cancelling the trip and telling the passengers to pay Rs 300-400 more." Aneesha Acharya replied to the post and posted, "Today, I booked an Uber ride to go to a hospital in Pimpri from the camp area. Fare on app was Rs 295. On arrival the driver insisted that I pay Rs 700 for 20km. I called Uber support and was shocked to hear 'you have to pay by meter, rates not yet fixed'."
