GOF seizes e-waste worth over RM31mil in Parit
IPOH: The General Operations Force (GOF) has seized electronic waste (e-waste) worth RM31.3mil in a raid on an illegal factory within an oil palm plantation in Parit.
Ulu Kinta GOF Northern Brigade Commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said the items seized on Tuesday (July 22) included 81 blocks of e-waste weighing 105.3 tonnes, five tonnes of coal, two four-wheel-drive vehicles and a trailer lorry.
"The investigation found that the illegal factory, about 5km from the main road, is believed to have been carrying out unlicensed e-waste processing activities using specialised equipment without any approval from the authorities.
"The raid, conducted in collaboration with the Perak Environment Department (DOE), Perak Tengah District Council and Perak Tengah District and Land Office, also led to the arrest of three local men, aged between 36 and 70, to assist with the investigation,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 23).
SAC Shahrum said the case is being investigated under Sections 18, 19, and 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, Section 6 of the Second-hand Dealers Act 1946, as well as Section 127 of the National Land Code.
He added that enforcement efforts would be intensified, with no compromise given to any party involved in illegal activities.
"The public is urged to serve as the eyes and ears of the authorities by channelling information on such illegal activities,' he said. – Bernama

GOF foils smuggling bid, arrest undocumented migrants
KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) stopped two human smuggling attempts in Kelantan over two days, arresting several undocumented migrants and two suspected tekong darat (name given by locals to those harbouring illegal immigrants). GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the operations, which began on Sunday, were part of Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan. He said the Seventh Battalion detained a vehicle at a roadblock in Chabang Empat Salam, Rantau Panjang, around 3pm Sunday, on suspicion of transporting undocumented migrants. "Upon inspection, (they) found three men and two women from Myanmar, all without valid identification. "The 38-year-old local driver was arrested under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM), while the five Myanmar nationals were held under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said. He said the driver also tested positive for methamphetamine. In a separate raid just after midnight on Monday, GOF personnel stormed a house in Kampung Slow Machang, Pasir Mas. "The raid followed intelligence on smuggling activities. "A 50-year-old local man, believed to be the tekong darat, tried to flee but was swiftly apprehended. Officers also found two men and two women from Myanmar, all undocumented and believed to have entered Malaysia illegally. The team also seized 14 Yaba pills hidden in a cigarette box belonging to the suspect. All undocumented migrants were held under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, while the suspected smugglers were arrested under Section 26J of the ATIPSOM Act and Sections 12(2) and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. He said the GOF remains committed to tackling cross-border crimes, especially human trafficking and drug-related offences.

Foamy effluent from glove factory sparks shutdown order
SUNGAI PETANI: A rubber glove factory here has been ordered to halt operations after it was found discharging foamy effluent into the public drainage system. Kedah Department of Environment (DoE) director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the enforcement action followed a public complaint received on July 27 regarding the incident. She added that an investigation team was immediately dispatched to the site on the same day, where it was confirmed that the factory had released foamy wastewater into the drains. "This not only pollutes the environment but also poses a threat to the water ecosystem and public health. "As an immediate measure, the Kedah DoE enforced an equipment seizure under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. "This action aims to immediately halt the polluting activity by the factory," she said in a statement today. Sharifah Zakiah said an investigation paper has also been opened under Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Amendment 2024). Under this provision, those found guilty may face a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine ranging from RM50,000 to RM10 million. "Such a severe penalty reflects the government's seriousness in addressing environmental pollution. "The Kedah DoE will not compromise on any form of environmental contamination. "We deeply appreciate public reports on this matter and pledge to continue monitoring the situation closely," she added. Sharifah Zakiah also urged the public to continue cooperating with the DoE in safeguarding the environment. She said those wishing to lodge a complaint may contact the toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-2727 or visit the e-complaint system at "Everyone's cooperation is vital to ensure the environment is preserved for future generations," she said.
