NSFs to publish Games selection policy two years in advance: Mandaviya
New Delhi: With a view to encouraging transparency in selection for elite events such as Olympics and Asian Games, all sports federations are mandated to publish their selection policy two years in advance, union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Rajya Sabha in a written response on Thursday. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya. (PTI) Almost all major National Sports Federations (NSFs) have complied with the directive with Badminton Association of India (BAI), Boxing Federation of India (BFI), and National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) making their selection criteria available on their website. Selection of the boxing team is done on the basis of an evaluation system where pugilists are judged on key parameters such as sparring, weight management, gym performance and running. NRAI relies on two-stage selection trials. The rankings are determined after four selection trials and the rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters are picked and slotted in Group A and B. Only the Group A shooters are considered for senior international events. The system worked well for India at last year's Paris Olympics where shooters ended an eight-year duck, claiming three medals. The same system was recently used to pick teams for Asian Championships and the junior and senior World Cups. Like NRAI, the badminton association too picks its teams from an elite core group that is 'formed in consultation with the department concerned of Sports Authority of India,' as per its website. 'For participation in international tournaments, entries of senior players are sent from the core group as per their BWF Ranking. Apart from above, for a few international tournaments, players are selected from sr ranking tournaments. These selection tournaments are declared in advance and put in website,' it states. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) too is largely in compliance. The squads are chosen on the basis of selection trials, and while it's way too early for WFI to announce the trials for next year's Asian Games, it has put out notifications for all international senior and age-group events on the website. 'We have been quite transparent with our policies. The wrestlers are notified well in advance and the same is uploaded on the website,' a WFI official said. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) picks teams based on athletes meeting entry standards or qualifying via the rankings route. 'All our policies are clearly mentioned on our website. We are among the first NSFs of the country to adopt such a transparent approach. Our directives to athletes are also put out well in advance to ensure there is no confusion,' AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla said. Mandaviya's statement also recalled the instructions released in March with respect to the selection for international meets, inclusion in coaching camps and selection of coaches and support staff. An important mandate from the ministry makes it mandatory for NSFs to record selection trials. 'Selection trials must be video recorded or monitored via CCTV. Recordings must be sent to SAI with minutes of the selection committee,' Mandaviya said. It is also mandatory for NSFs to have a Grievance Redressal Mechanism. 'It must be in place and grievances resolved within seven days. Grievance committees must be independent of the selection committee,' he stated.

Techology, Animation Can Lure More Eyes To Shooting League Of India: Ronak Pandit
Last Updated: Ronak Pandit, High-Performance Manager of the Indian Shooting team, believes technology and animation can grow the audience for the Shooting League of India, debuting in Nov 2025. The Indian Shooting team's High-Performance Manager Ronak Pandit believes the Shooting League of India can use technology to help in growing the audience for the sport. Speaking on the sidelines of the Indian national camp in Dehradun in July, the former India shooter and pistol coach said that technology and animation can play a major differentiator during the league to present the sport in a new avatar. 'People look at shooting as a technical, boring sport. We need to make it fun and get animation involved. Through technology and animation, we can explain to the masses in a fun way what exactly happens in the sport," Pandit said. 'People need to be educated about various aspects of the sport, but not in a technical manner. By using animation, we can ensure it is not left to people's imagination. If people have not seen it, then it becomes difficult for them to understand," the 40-year-old added. Shooting League of India, the first franchise-based professional shooting competition in India, was sanctioned by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) earlier this year and has already received support from the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). Pandit believes the tournament needs to garner mass engagement to make the league lucrative for the investors and sustainable for years to come. 'We need to make the league sustainable by making it lucrative for people who are investing. Everything comes down to eyeballs and mass engagement, which cannot just happen through viewership. One also needs to experience it. We need to start thinking about how to make the sport fun and make it accessible for the common man," he said. The first edition of the tournament will include mixed team events across pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3p), and shotgun (Trap & Skeet) categories. Shooters will be grouped into four tiers — Elite Champions, World Elite, National Champions, and Junior & Youth Champions — ensuring a dynamic blend of experience and emerging talent. Giving an insight into the audience's mindset, Pandit explained why the league should focus on becoming a source of 'meaningful entertainment'. 'Shooting is not a spectator sport, but people watch it during the Olympics. The emotional connection is with the Indian team winning a medal. But with the league, we need to go beyond this idea," he said. 'Indian movie viewers also go to theatres to watch Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun Maverick' because it is entertaining. We need to present the league in a similar fashion by using technological means to build anticipation with each and every shot. As soon as a player picks a gun, we can find ways using technology to showcase the athlete's mindset and offer statistics to showcase the possibility of success with each type of shot. These means will help in engaging the audience," the 40-year-old said. The first edition of the Shooting League of India has been allocated a window by ISSF between November 20, 2025, and December 2, 2025. The tournament will take place at Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. With Shooting League of India, ISSF ready to embrace attention
Over 70 shooters from around 20 countries, and around 500 domestic shooters have applied for the auction, for which a date is yet to be confirmed. "The Indian league (SLI) is really important also because it gives great attention and equal representation to men and women. I hope that this will be great chance for the athletes to receive attention from TV. It is time that the game opens to the world and we are ready to receive the attention," Rossi added. Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, president of the National Rifles Association of India (NRAI) emphasised on how technology could bridge the gap between the sport and the audiences. "New camera angles and biofeedback can be brought in to bring more excitement to the game as well as a better understanding of what the athlete is going through. When they are pulling that trigger and hitting that shot and the joys or the disappointments felt by them and they miss the goal by just the width of one breath," he said. With regards to the format, Kalikesh said that the league will try to keep it to the purest form of the game. "We also understand the pressures and the pulls of the current market of audiences. We are in advanced talks with some sponsors and broadcasters. We are also looking at esports as a key component to the league," he said.
