A Lebanese MP who has close ties to U.S. officials has recently held meetings in Washington in coordination with President Joseph Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri, during which he 'explained the risks from pressuring Lebanon to disarm the resistance and the domestic problems that may result from that,' a media report said.
'The MP clarified to his U.S. interlocutors the importance of domestic dialogue to resolve this issue according to the president's proposal, noting that this dialogue had recently started in meetings between the head of the Loyalty to Resistance bloc MP Mohammad Raad and former Information Ministry director general Mohammad Obeid, who is close to Aoun,' political sources told al-Akhbar newspaper.
'There is U.S. leniency and a greater understanding in Washington of Baabda's viewpoint and that might be behind the decision to remove U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus from her post,' the sources added.

First UNHCR-supervised convoy of ‘voluntary returns' to Syria crosses Masnaa

As announced in early July, the first phase of the "voluntary return" program for Syrian migrants and refugees in Lebanon was officially launched on Tuesday, under the supervision of Lebanese authorities and in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The initiative follows the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's General Security oversaw the return of 71 individuals from 16 families, in coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a security source confirmed to L'Orient-Le Jour. The first convoy — comprising three buses — crossed the Lebanese-Syrian border in the morning via the Masnaa border crossing in eastern Bekaa. This is currently the only open point for conducting this pilot phase."Three buses transporting 71 refugees, as well as three...

Hezbollah disarmament 'essential,' says Michel Issa before U.S. Senate

BEIRUT — Before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Michel Issa, President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, called for urgent action against Hezbollah, stating that its disarmament is not an option but a necessity. "The full disarmament of Hezbollah is not optional; it is essential. The time to act is now," Issa said in his opening remarks as the Senate considered his nomination. He recalled that he was born in Beirut, studied in France and spent 'most' of his adult life in the United States. "My presence here is a testament to the enduring promise of the American dream, which allowed a young man born in Beirut to become a banker, a businessman, and now, a public servant. If confirmed, I will devote myself fully to advancing American interests and values in Lebano," he said. Stating that he "intimately understands the complexity of Lebanese society," he said that this understanding would guide his efforts to "build bridges, promote unity, and support the country's democratic institutions." "I have remained deeply connected to Lebanon over the years and have witnessed the resilience of its people, despite constant obstacles caused by corruption, economic mismanagement and the violent influence of Hezbollah and its Iranian backers," he added. Returning to the consequences of the recent war between Israel and Hezbollah, Issa considered that although it was "devastating," it had opened "a narrow but significant window" for progress. "We have witnessed promising developments: an independent president and prime minister, reformers, determined to take their country in a new direction," he said. Emphasizing that the Lebanese government has "begun to reduce Hezbollah's influence" since the cease-fire was implemented, he added that "additional, urgent measures are needed." He also said that "the United States must continue to play a leading role in seizing a genuine historic opportunity: demarcating the borders between Israel and Lebanon, and fostering normalization of relations between the two countries." The prospective diplomat also stressed that "rebuilding Lebanon must go hand in hand with serious reforms ensuring transparent distribution of aid and investments." He also insisted on the importance of the role of the Lebanese Army, a "reliable partner," saying that it "is now taking concrete steps to enforce the cease-fire and dismantle Hezbollah's infrastructure in the south." "These efforts demonstrate the value of our ongoing security cooperation," he emphasized. Issa made a point of clarifying his loyalty: "To avoid any potential conflict of interest and to demonstrate that my loyalty is exclusively to the United States, I have voluntarily renounced my Lebanese citizenship." The cease-fire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which went into effect on Nov. 27, called for the total withdrawal of Israeli troops from south Lebanon, where they still occupy five positions on Lebanese territory, continue to carry out ground incursions, and conduct near-daily strikes. On the Lebanese side, it was supposed to lead to Hezbollah's disarmament, primarily south of the Litani River, and then in the country as a whole, as outlined in U.N. Resolution 1701, which serves as the framework for the cease-fire agreement — something the militia party rejects. Israeli attacks on Lebanon over the past eight months have killed more than 270 people.

Order on the Occasion of the Eightieth Armed Forces Day

Wednesday, 30 July 2025 Fellow Troops, With a united heart beating with faith, hope, and pride, we celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the LAF, which today holds particular significance amidst the conflicts in our region. On this occasion, we reflect on eighty years of dedication and sacrifices made by our military personnel, recognizing more than ever that the Armed Forces, for which its martyrs sacrifice their blood, transcending all affiliations and loyalties except loyalty to Lebanon, is an Armed Forces capable of overcoming obstacles with unwavering will, leading the nation to the sought-after salvation. Fellow Troops, In light of the grave events shaking the region, Lebanon faces a series of intertwined challenges, chief among them the threats and assaults from the Israeli enemy against our country and the peoples of the region, who persist in violating international resolutions and attempting to disrupt our social structure. Following this is terrorism, which seeks to undermine the unity of the homeland and the safety of its citizens. Additionally, the repercussions of regional events leave their mark on our internal landscape, necessitating a collective effort to maintain national unity and for all parties to act with awareness and responsibility to navigate this critical phase. Amid these circumstances, the LAF continues to carry out its missions despite limited resources, including the completion of establishing state authority and asserting its control over all its territories as per the political authority's mandate. This includes implementing international resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, in close cooperation and coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as carrying out security maintenance tasks, securing and protecting the northern and eastern borders, monitoring maritime borders and territorial waters, combating organized crime, and supporting Lebanese citizens through developmental and humanitarian missions. All of this necessitates enhancing the LAF's capabilities to meet challenges, and we look forward to cooperation with brotherly and friendly nations to achieve this goal. The LAF will not relent in thwarting any attempt to undermine security and civil peace or drag the nation into strife, remaining the guarantor of all Lebanese and committed to their unity, cohesion, and solidarity within the framework of state institutions. Fellow Troops, I fully recognize the difficulties each of you faces with faith and determination, whether on a professional or social level. I look upon you with pride and appreciation, sensing in you dignity and absolute dedication. I assure you that the LAF Command is making continuous efforts to support you and secure the greatest possible rights and improve your conditions. Know that the strength and stability of the state come from the strength of the LAF, whose strength is the result of your unity and high morale. We emphasize the necessity of providing the required support to the military institution from the relevant authorities in the state, enabling it to develop its capabilities and improve its conditions in facing the current difficult circumstances. Continue your work diligently and do not hesitate to give your all in defense of your families and homeland, to uphold the message of honor, sacrifice, and loyalty. Yarzeh, on 30/07/2025 General Haykal Lebanese Armed Forces Commander
