The Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle 30,000 narcotic pills across the Syrian border.
Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Muqdad Miri said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "As part of the ongoing efforts made by the Border Forces Command to prevent cross-border drug trafficking, detachments of the Second Regiment of the Border Forces Commando Brigade were able to thwart an attempt to smuggle 30,000 Captagon pills across the Euphrates River towards Iraq in the Baghouz area."
The statement added, "The operation was monitored by thermal imaging cameras. The smuggled materials were hidden inside plastic containers and packed in bags, then tied tightly with reeds for camouflage. However, the vigilance of the Border Security Force heroes prevented the smuggling operation from succeeding."
It confirmed that "the necessary legal measures were taken, and the seized materials were handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation."

Since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad late last year, attacks on religious minorities — including Alawites, the sect to which Assad belonged — have posed a growing challenge to the new leadership, despite its promises to safeguard all communities. In March alone, over 1,700 people, most of them Alawites, were killed in violent outbreaks along the coast. Authorities blamed pro-Assad loyalists for igniting the bloodshed by launching deadly ambushes on security personnel.

Syria seizes missile cache bound for Lebanon
