Iraq's narcotics fight intensifies: Death sentence for drug smuggler
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, a criminal court in Najaf sentenced a man to death by hanging for smuggling narcotics into Iraq, a judicial source reported to Shafaq News. The convict was found guilty of bringing more than one kilogram of illegal drugs into the province. He also admitted hiding the substances inside children's toys and rubber tires with the intent to distribute them locally. The ruling comes amid intensified efforts by Iraqi authorities to combat drug trafficking across the country. Earlier today, the Iraqi Border Crossings Authority thwarted an attempt to smuggle thousands of Captagon pills through the Al-Qaim crossing in the country's western region. Addressing Shafaq News, Alaa al-Qaisi, the spokesperson for the Authority, confirmed that the operation was based on precise intelligence provided by the anti-narcotics unit. A total of 3,803 pills were discovered hidden inside a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The driver, an Iraqi national, was taken into custody. Officials described the seizure as one of the most significant operations targeting drug trafficking networks in recent weeks. Last month, Iraqi border forces also intercepted 600,000 Captagon pills—equivalent to 104 kilograms—at the Safwan crossing with Kuwait. Notably, Iraq lies along major trafficking routes linking Southwest Asia, the Gulf, and Europe. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has previously reported a sharp increase in drug seizures, warning that Iraq is playing an increasingly central role in regional smuggling operations involving Captagon and methamphetamine. UNODC has also cautioned that Iraq may be shifting from a transit corridor to a site of production, citing growing domestic consumption driven by economic instability and limited border control.

Kuwait Sentences Police Officers To 10 Years For Drug Smuggling
A Kuwaiti court has sentenced two policemen and a customs inspector to 10 years in prison each for attempting to smuggle drugs. The country's Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of the three, including a firefighting officer, on attempting to smuggle 1 million banned Lyrica pills at Kuwait Airport. The defendants had been arrested by the Kuwaiti anti-drug police after receiving information that they were smuggling the substance in seven suitcases, Al Qabas newspaper reported without specifying the date of the arrests. Several countries ban dealing in Lyrica pills because of potential abuse and addiction. In recent months, Kuwaiti authorities have announced foiling several bids to smuggle drugs into the country. Earlier this month, a shipment arriving at Kuwait's Shuwaikh Port was found out to have contained 110kg of hashish that had been secretly hidden inside marble slabs. Two suspects — a Syrian national and an illegal resident with Eritrean citizenship— were arrested in connection with the bid, the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry said. They attempted to smuggle the shipment in collaboration with a person outside Kuwait identified as a Gulf national. In addition to the drugs, 6,000 Captagon pills, 5 grams of the intoxicating shabu substance, and a digital scale used in preparing and distributing narcotics were found at one suspect' house. The origin country of the illicit cargo was not revealed.

Saudi Arabia seizes 1.5 million Captagon pills hidden in tables
Saudi Arabia on Thursday announced the interception of 1.5 million Captagon pills in Riyadh hidden in a shipment of tables. The Ministry of Interior said the operation led to the arrest of three Syrians and one Saudi citizen. The shipment's country of origin was not disclosed. 'The General Directorate of Narcotics Control seized 1,520,000 tablets of the narcotic substance amphetamine hidden inside a shipment of tables in the Riyadh region,' a statement read. 'The intended recipients were arrested in the Riyadh and Eastern regions and include three Syrian nationals and one Saudi citizen." Security officials urged citizens and residents to report any information related to drug trafficking or distribution. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have stepped up efforts to combat the smuggling of Captagon, an amphetamine-like stimulant that has raised alarm across the region due to its widespread use. Syria was the region's primary producer of Captagon until the fall of former president Bashar Al Assad in December, although he had denied his government's involvement. The new administration has pledged to crack down on the production and trafficking of the drug. In 2021, it was estimated the Syrian government generated more than $5 billion from the Captagon trade. The drug is transported to some Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, leading to a string of high-profile seizures. In February, Saudi authorities arrested 15 state employees in connection with three criminal networks involved in drug trafficking. A Ministry of Interior official said a total of 19 people were detained in the Asir, Jazan and Eastern provinces. The groups were allegedly involved in smuggling drugs across the kingdom and laundering the proceeds. Those arrested included five Interior Ministry employees, seven from the Tax and Customs Authority and three from the Ministry of Defence. A month earlier, Saudi Arabia executed six Iranians convicted of drug smuggling, state news agency SPA reported, an act that prompted protests from the government in Tehran. In 2023, Saudi authorities launched a widely publicised anti-drugs campaign involving raids, arrests and public awareness drives.
