'Slow down' and 'deeply observe' the company culture when starting a new job, says ex-Apple director
When job-hopping, make sure not to accidentally bring your old company's culture along for the ride, said Bob Baxley, a former director of design at Apple.
"I think my own particular mistake, and I've seen this with some other Apple executives as well, is we went directly from Apple — I left Apple on a Friday and I started Pinterest on a Monday," Baxley said on a recent episode of Lenny's Podcast. "And I didn't give myself time to recalibrate to the Pinterest culture."
After leaving Apple in 2014, Baxley went on to work as the head of product design at Pinterest, where he said he "bounced off" the culture, given that he was still acting as he had in his previous role.
"I came in thinking I was supposed to behave the way I behaved at Apple, which is very direct, fighting hard. It's very — everybody cares about each other, it's never insulting, but it's intense," he said. "That's not really where Pinterest was at the time."
It's not just Apple's working environment that has a way of sticking with you, Baxley added — most major tech companies have " really powerful cultures."
"You get kind of indoctrinated into all those standards and it's really deep. It infuses all of your behavior and how you conduct yourself in the company, away from the company," he said. "And so, I think it's pretty hard to immigrate successfully from one of those environments to another."
Baxley said that other former Apple employees have smoother transitions, purely by virtue of taking time off before taking up a new position. Baxley cites Hiroki Asai as a prime example — as Apple's former Vice President of Global Marketing, Asai took years off for "re-wirement" prior to joining AirBnB, according to his LinkedIn.
"It also should be noted that he had — it was a multi-year gap between the time he left Apple and the time he started Airbnb," Baxley said. Asai and Apple did not respond to a request for comment by Business Insider prior to publication.
"At Apple, I think it was Tim or Steve, used to talk about the Apple car wash," he added. "That when you started Apple, they kind of had to take you through the car wash and get off all that stuff that you'd accumulated at other places. It turns out there's a car wash you need to go through when you leave Apple as well."
Though eschewing old habits as you move into a new role is important, that doesn't mean you should forget the lessons your old job taught you, Baxley said.
"The thing I took away from Apple, and I think this is true for anybody changing from one major culture to another, is most likely, the new place hires you because of the values of the organization you left, but not the behaviors," he said.
As you move on, it's worth asking how you can best incorporate the best aspects of your old company's culture in your new workplace, Baxley added.
"And so I think it's important to recalibrate and say, well, I want to hold onto these values," he said. "So at Apple, attention to detail, product excellence, doing everything you can for the customer and the user — so, try to hold onto those values but then think, 'Okay, how are those values best expressed in this culture?'"
Still, Baxley told Business Insider, it won't always be possible to pause between roles — particularly in the tech sphere, where companies usually want new hires to onboard right away. Even if you have to start immediately, it could be helpful to go in while expecting a period of adjustment.
"My biggest point on this topic is that when you go into a new culture you really need to slow down, deeply observe, don't judge or compare, and then when you have a reasonable handle on things, reflect on the best ways to express the values from the old place with behaviors that are appropriate to the new," he told BI.

Currently, most of Wall Street has focused on companies like Nvidia, which are selling billions of dollars worth of chips and hardware for AI data centers. Eventually, though, AI will move beyond its hyperfocus on data centers into the real world, and that presents a huge market opportunity that investors are only just beginning to position their portfolios for. Three Motley Fool analysts put their heads together. They arrived at Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD), and Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) as technology leaders in excellent position to capitalize on AI tailwinds that could drive growth for years to come. Here is what you need to know. Justin Pope (Apple): Smartphones have become handheld computers, the central technology hub for people living their daily lives. It makes Apple a clear favorite as AI software becomes increasingly integrated into society. The company's iOS mobile operating system spans phones, accessories, watches, tablets, and computers that all work seamlessly together, creating a formidable competitive moat. In other words, the more iOS devices you use, the more of a pain it is to abandon the system for something else. Today, that iOS user base spans 2.35 billion devices. It's the perfect distribution network for AI software. But it has become evident that the company's first attempt at AI, Apple Intelligence, hasn't gone off with a bang. Fortunately for Apple, its system's stickiness gives the iPhone maker room for error that most brands don't have. There's a solid chance that the company will eventually work out these kinks and deploy its consumer-facing AI technology across billions of devices, whether smartphones or other device using its far-reaching iOS platform. Most companies will build AI and then try to find customers -- Apple already has customers, it just needs to develop and ship good software. The company is a behemoth today, and probably won't grow fast enough to replicate its past investment returns. Still, there may be no better-positioned consumer-facing business ready to capitalize on AI's potential than Apple, and that's an advantage the company should retain for as long as people stay within its iOS system. The stock has become a slower and steadier grower with a rising dividend, making it an ideal investment to stash in a long-term portfolio and take advantage of dividend reinvesting, letting Apple compound for as long as people continue to upgrade their devices. Will Healy (The Trade Desk): The Trade Desk is in a sweet spot when it comes to capitalizing on AI. It operates a buy-side platform that companies and ad agencies use to purchase ad space ideally suited for targeting demographics, thereby maximizing returns on ad spending. It is currently migrating clients from its old platform, Solimar, to its AI-driven Kokai platform, which offers users enhanced AI to improve ad bidding, targeting, and budgeting for ad buys. Also, its measuring and forecasting functions offer improved insights and predictive capabilities. Investors may not be aware of how much impact such improvements could have for the global digital ad market and, by extension, its investors. Research and Markets predicts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% between 2022 and 2030 for the digital advertising industry. Hence, this market will grow to around $1.5 trillion by 2030 if Research and Markets' forecast comes to pass. In the first quarter of 2025, The Trade Desk reported $616 million in revenue, a 25% increase from year-ago levels. Still, since that amounts to revenue of just under $2.6 billion over the trailing 12 months, the company claims well under 1% of the addressable market. It's consistently profitable. In the first quarter, it earned nearly $51 million in net income, a 60% yearly increase. And investors may recall the massive sell-off after the company failed to meet its own revenue projection in the fourth quarter. The silver lining is that the recent declines have taken its forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) to 40. That multiple does not make this stock cheap, though it is down from a forward P/E of more than 80 in December. This means investors can capitalize on this potentially lucrative opportunity without paying an uncomfortably high premium, making The Trade Desk particularly attractive to AI-focused investors. Jake Lerch (Robinhood Markets): As AI software begins to truly take off, one area to watch is financial services. Specifically, investment advisory and brokerage services. The company I'm keeping a close eye on is Robinhood Markets. Robinhood is one of the fastest-growing brokerages, with revenue increases of 50% as of its most recent quarter (ending on March 31). And with shares up more than 200% over the last 12 months, it's clear that investors are excited about the company's performance. However, Robinhood's AI initiatives are an under-the-radar asset that could grow in importance in the coming years. For example, last July, it acquired Pluto, an AI investment research company. Pluto's data analytics capabilities and algorithms can provide Robinhood customers with insights into market and financial data as well as key trends. It can also provide real-time reviews of a customer's investment portfolio, highlighting risks and suggesting strategies based on the person's risk tolerance, age, investment style, and goals. Some of these tools will likely be incorporated into Robinhood's Cortex, an AI investment tool that the company plans to roll out later this year. Cortex will form an integral part of Robinhood's strategy of bringing a private wealth management experience to the everyday investor. By providing personalized investment analysis and portfolio management to each customer, the company hopes to grow its assets under management (AUM), which already stand at more than $200 billion. And as its AUM grows, so should the company's revenue, net income, and free cash flow. In summary, AI will continue to become more central to all aspects of the economy. In retail investing, customers will come to expect personalized analysis and advice, and Robinhood is positioning itself to be a leader within that space. Warren Buffett Has $90 Billion Invested in These 9 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks. Here's the Best of the Bunch.
Berkshire Hathaway owns only two AI stocks. However, Buffett's "secret portfolio" owns another seven AI stocks. The best Buffett AI stock should benefit tremendously as organizations build and deploy AI models in the cloud. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Warren Buffett readily admits that he doesn't understand artificial intelligence (AI). He has also said that he won't invest in businesses that he understands. So, does that mean the legendary investor doesn't own any AI stocks? Nope. Actually, Buffett has invested roughly $90 billion in nine companies that are heavily focused on AI. Here they are -- and which one is the best of the bunch. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) ranks as the largest holding in Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) portfolio. Berkshire's stake in the iPhone maker is valued at close to $59.3 billion. Although Buffett significantly reduced the conglomerate's position in Apple last year, it still makes up 21% of Berkshire's total portfolio. AI has been at the forefront of Apple's development strategy for years. However, the company was seemingly left behind in the generative AI race until it launched Apple Intelligence in 2024. So far, though, Apple Intelligence doesn't appear to be igniting the super-cycle of iPhone upgrades that some analysts predicted. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is another top AI stock in Berkshire's portfolio, albeit a much smaller one. Berkshire owns around $2.1 billion of the e-commerce and cloud service giant's shares. Buffett didn't make the initial decision to buy Amazon; one of Berkshire's other investment managers (either Todd Combs or Ted Weschler) bought the stock. Most AI models run in the cloud. As the largest cloud services provider in the world, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been a big winner as organizations scrambled to build and deploy AI models in the cloud. Amazon is also using AI extensively internally to increase efficiency and provide more services to customers. Apple and Amazon are the only AI stocks owned directly by Berkshire Hathaway. But I said that Buffett owned nine AI stocks. Where are the other seven? In Buffett's "secret portfolio." General Reinsurance acquired New England Asset Management (NEAM) in 1995. Three years later, Berkshire Hathaway acquired General Re. NEAM continues to manage investments for insurance companies. Its holdings don't show up in Berkshire Hathaway's regulatory filings, but any stock owned by NEAM is also owned by Buffett. Apple is the only AI stock in both Berkshire's and NEAM's portfolios. NEAM owns two other so-called "Magnificent Seven" stocks -- Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). Like Amazon, both Alphabet and Microsoft are major cloud service providers and are profiting from the strong AI tailwind. NEAM also has stakes in a couple of tech pioneers that are investing heavily in AI. IBM (NYSE: IBM) made headlines in the past with the success of its Watson AI technology. Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN) isn't exactly a shining star in the AI world. However, the company makes edge AI products (AI deployed on local devices) and is working with Nvidia to develop power management and sensing technologies for data centers. The stocks of three AI chipmakers are also in NEAM's portfolio. Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) manufactures AI products, including Ethernet switches designed to accelerate AI workloads and custom AI accelerators. NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ: NXPI) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) sell products that support edge AI. If you're an income investor, Texas Instruments is probably the best pick among Buffett's nine AI stocks. Its forward dividend yield stands at 2.73%. Alphabet is arguably the most attractively valued AI stock in the group, with growth prospects factored in. The Google parent's price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio is 1.36. I think the best Buffett AI stock all-around, though, is Amazon. The company is poised to profit as more organizations move their apps and data to the cloud. It still has significant growth prospects in e-commerce as well. Amazon is also expanding into new markets, including healthcare, autonomous ride-hailing, and satellite internet services.
