Reds, Marlins head into series looking to continue improvement
Monday marks the start of a four-game series between the two squads, both of which have improved their play of late. The Reds are 16-11 since June 6, while the Marlins have taken 10 of their last 13 games. Miami took two of three when the teams faced each other in South Florida back in April.
Right-hander Janson Junk is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season and his ninth appearance since the Marlins promoted him in May. He's coming off a tough-luck loss to the Minnesota Twins last Wednesday. He gave up just two runs on six hits over six innings and struck out seven with no walks in a 2-1 defeat.
Junk will see the Reds for the first time.
Cincinnati will counter with righty Brady Singer , who pitched just three innings in Boston last Tuesday and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks before rain forced the suspension of that game until the following day.
He has two career starts against the Marlins, including a win in Miami on April 23 when he gave up two runs on four hits and no walks over six innings. Singer fanned eight in the 5-2 victory.
The Reds are coming off a 3-1 loss Sunday to the Philadelphia Phillies. Austin Hays' eighth home run of the season was the only hit the Reds got in losing the rubber match of the series.
Only one Reds player, Elly De La Cruz, was named to the NL All-Star Team on Sunday. The shortstop, 23, leads the team with 18 home runs, 60 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. He's also been swinging the bat well of late, hitting .339 over his last 15 games with eight multi-hit games in that span.
While De La Cruz was expected to make the NL squad, some fans had hoped center fielder TJ Friedl and starting pitcher Andrew Abbott would join him. However, manager Terry Francona announced just one name to the team before Sunday's game.
"I wanted it to be upbeat, because it's very much an honor for Elly," Francona said, according to MLB.com. "I also wanted some of the guys to know that we care, like Friedl and Abbott. I love this team. We may have one All-Star right now, but I will take this team."
Miami fell 3-1 to Milwaukee on Sunday. Heriberto Hernandez had two of the Marlins' three hits in the loss, including a home run.
The Marlins also had just one representative make the All-Star Game. Left fielder Kyle Stowers tops the team with 16 homers and 46 RBIs. He's batting .333 in his last 13 games with six homers.
"As good as a performer as he has been during this first half, Kyle is equally as impressive off the field," said his manager, Clayton McCullough, to MLB.com. "It's the way he treats everyone. He's growing into a real leader on our team, and that's not just because of how he's played. It's about how accountable he is to his actions and the care factor he has."

Milwaukee Bucks' Bold Three-Team Trade Proposal Could Land $160,000,000 Portland Trail Blazers Superstar to Support the Greek Freak
Milwaukee Bucks vs Portland Trail Blazers (Image via Howard Lao/AP) In a move that signals their unrelenting commitment to championship contention, the Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly exploring a blockbuster three-team trade to acquire $ 160 million forward Jerami Grant . The proposed trade, originally outlined by Joe Mayo for could reshape Milwaukee's lineup heading into the 2024-25 season, as they aim to maximize Giannis Antetokounmpo's prime years. The Proposed Three-Team Trade Breakdown According to the mock deal suggested by Sports Illustrated, the trade would involve the Milwaukee Bucks , Portland Trail Blazers, and Atlanta Hawks in the following configuration: Team Receives Bucks Jerami Grant, 2027 second-round pick (via ATL) Trail Blazers Kyle Kuzma, AJ Green, Tyler Smith, 2032 first-round pick swap (via MKE) Hawks Andre Jackson Jr. This potential deal would see Milwaukee part ways with Kyle Kuzma after just half a season, alongside some promising young assets, to secure a high-ceiling scorer in Grant. Kuzma's Short Stint in Milwaukee Jerami Grant of the Blazers (Image via Getty) Kyle Kuzma , who joined the Milwaukee Bucks at the 2024-25 trade deadline, played 33 regular-season games for Milwaukee. While his averages—14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 31.8 minutes per game—were solid, his postseason performance raised concerns. Despite high expectations, Kuzma struggled in the playoffs, leading some within the organization to question whether he is the right fit for Milwaukee's long-term vision. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Jerami Grant: High Risk, High Reward? Jerami Grant, a 31-year-old forward, is coming off a season hampered by a right knee injury that rendered him nearly invisible for Portland after the All-Star break. However, prior to that downturn, Grant had established himself as a consistent scoring option, averaging at least 19 points per game for four consecutive seasons. However, when healthy, Grant's versatility on both ends of the floor could fill the void left by Kuzma and offer Milwaukee more playoff stability. What This Means for the Milwaukee Bucks The Milwaukee Bucks' front office has made it clear that they are all-in. From waiving Damian Lillard to adding Myles Turner and now potentially targeting Jerami Grant, Milwaukee is pulling no punches. According to Joe Mayo, 'If the Bucks are committed to moving off Kuzma, Grant could be a viable replacement.' The trade would cost the Bucks some of their future capital, including a 2032 first-round pick swap, but acquiring a player of Grant's caliber aligns with their win-now philosophy in an Eastern Conference without a clear-cut favorite. Marlins cool off Brewers to open series
Otto Lopez had three hits and two RBIs to help the visiting Miami Marlins to a 5-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of their three-game series on Friday afternoon. Marlins cool off Brewers to open series Kyle Stowers homered and scored twice for Miami, which has won five of seven coming out of the All-Star break. Marlins starter Cal Quantrill allowed one run and three hits in five innings. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Josh Simpson pitched a scoreless sixth for the Marlins. Anthony Bender stranded two runners in scoring position in the seventh. Ronny Henriquez retired the side in order in the eighth, and Calvin Faucher left runners on second and third in the ninth. Brewers starter Freddy Peralta allowed one run and five hits in five-plus innings. He struck out nine and walked two. Jackson Chourio homered for the Brewers, who had won 12 of 13. That extended Chourio's hitting streak to 18 games. Stowers hit an opposite-field solo homer to left-center field in the third inning to give Miami a 1-0 lead. Chourio tied it up 1-1 when he blasted a two-out solo home run over the fence in center in the fourth. Xavier Edwards started the four-run seventh by beating out an infield single up the middle off Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby . Nick Mears came in with one out and issued back-to-back walks to load the bases. Lopez then lined a double into the right-center field gap. Blake Perkins bobbled the ball in center, allowing a third run to come home on the play while Lopez continued to third. Liam Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to score Lopez for a 5-1 lead. An unusual sequence of events occurred in the first inning. Miami designated hitter Agustin Ramirez hit a high fly to center with two outs that Perkins appeared to briefly glove after he leaped and reached over the center field fence. The ball came out of his webbing as he pulled it back, however, and bounced along the top of the fence before coming down on the warning track. The play was initially ruled a home run, but after a crew chief review Ramirez was placed at second base because the Milwaukee defense had given up on the play after seeing it ruled a home run. Ramirez stole third and Stowers walked, but they were stranded on the corners. Field Level Media This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

New York Yankees eye St. Louis Cardinals' All-Star Brendan Donovan as trade deadline nears
The New York Yankees are eyeing St. Louis Cardinals' All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan as the 2025 MLB trade deadline is nearing. With the Cardinals struggling at 53-51 and 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, trade rumours are heating up, and the Yankees are ready to act if the Cardinals decide to sell. The Cardinals are at a turning point. A rough July has them leaning toward trading players rather than adding to their roster. While names like Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray have popped up, their no-trade clauses complicate deals. Brendan Donovan, a 28-year-old fan favourite with team control through 2028, is also drawing interest from teams like the Yankees and Astros. Trading him would be a bold move for St. Louis, given his leadership and value, but a rebuild could make him a trade candidate. Brendan Donovan is a perfect match for the New York Yankees' needs. He is hitting .296 with a .797 OPS, nine home runs, and 42 RBIs in 2025. His contact skills and low strikeout rate make him a dependable hitter. Moreover, his 2022 Utility Gold Glove and ability to play second base, third base, and left field offer flexibility. The Yankees have struggled at second and third base, and Donovan's left-handed bat and versatility could stabilize their infield while adding consistency to their lineup. Trading Donovan would spark debate among Cardinals fans. He is a key leader and a cornerstone for the team's future. With prospect JJ Wetherholt possibly taking over second base in 2026, Donovan could move to the outfield, keeping his value high. However, a massive trade package, like one led by Yankees' top prospect Spencer Jones, might support the Cardinals' view on rebuilding. Donovan's trade value is at its peak, making this a critical moment for the Cardinals. The New York Yankees are also looking at Arizona's Eugenio Suarez, but Brendan Donovan's skills and versatility make him a prime target. The Astros' interest could drive up the price, and any deal would likely cost New York a hefty prospect package. On the other hand, the Cardinals see Donovan as a long-term asset, so a trade seems unlikely. If the Cardinaks shake things up, though, Donovan in pinstripes could shift the AL East race.
