'Operation Mahadev': Special plane flew guns overnight to CFSL, Chandigarh, for confirmatory ballistic tests

NEW DELHI: It was possibly the smallest cargo that a special plane, requisitioned at short notice, may have carried, but it ended up solving one of the most crucial terror investigations of the time. After three terrorists were killed in 'Operation Mahadev' on Monday, the security establishment did not stop at simply getting them identified by family members of the two locals who had provided them food and shelter at their seasonal 'dhok (hut)' near Baisaran, a day before the Pahalgam attack. Amit Shah directed the adoption of a more scientific route - a ballistic test at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Chandigarh, to match the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists with the cartridge casings recovered from the Pahalgam attack site. The latter had been tested earlier at the same lab. The weapons - an M-4 carbine and two AK-47s - were flown from Srinagar to Chandigarh on the special plane on Monday-Tuesday night. Forensic/ballistic experts at CFSL burnt the midnight oil, conducting test firings and generating empty shells for comparison. "The grooves and the markings from the barrels and shells matched perfectly... Six forensic experts confirmed to me on video call at 4.46am on Tuesday that these were the same rifles used in killing our innocent citizens (in Pahalgam)," Shah shared in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Amit Shah comes to Lok Sabha armed with proof on Pahalgam attackers

NEW DELHI: The three Pakistani terrorists who gunned down 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families, were cornered and killed on Monday in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and police in Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar, home minister Amit Shah disclosed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three attackers killed in 'Operation Mahadev' as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt alias Anas alias Usama Markaz; Hamza Afghan; and Jibran, all Pakistanis and affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT). Suleman, a top-grade LeT commander and the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, was also involved in the Oct 2024 attack at the Z-Morh construction site in Gagangir, in which six labourers and a local doctor were killed, he said. Both Hamza and Jibran were also 'A-grade' LeT terrorists. The three were identified by family members of two locals arrested on June 22 by NIA - Parvaiz and Bashir. The duo had provided food and shelter to them at their 'dhok (seasonal hut)' some 2km from Baisaran prior to the attack. A source said they were paid around Rs 3,000 by the terrorists. Shah had come to LS armed with conclusive evidence of direct involvement of the three terrorists in the Pahalgam attack as well as their Pakistani roots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 11 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo The ballistic report, he said, matched the cartridges and barrel of the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists, with the spent casings secured from the attack site. Two of the three terrorists were carrying Pakistani voter IDs and the weapons - an M4 carbine and two AK-47s - and chocolates recovered from them further sealed the Pakistani link. The neutralisation of all three Pahalgam attackers marks the culmination of a massive manhunt, which started with Shah's instructions to the forces at a security meeting on April 23 to not allow them to escape to Pakistan. As many as 1,055 eyewitnesses and suspects were questioned by NIA and other agencies over 3,000 hours, and sketches of the terrorists were prepared. Shah said it was on May 22 that human intelligence on presence of the assailants in Dachigam area was received. Technical surveillance was mounted by the Army and Intelligence Bureau to capture 'Ultra' signals of communications between the terrorists and their handlers in Pakistan. "IB, Army and CRPF personnel traversed on foot in cold and high altitudes to receive the signals. On July 22, we got success through sensors, and the location of the terrorists was confirmed. An operation was launched by CRPF and J&K Police under the leadership of 4 Para, and the three terrorists were surrounded and killed," he said.

"Not A Complete Closure": Pahalgam Victim's Father On Operation Mahadev

This is a closure, but not a complete closure, Rajesh Narwal, the father of Jammu and Kashmir terror attack victim naval officer Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, told NDTV, a day after the Army eliminated three terrorists in an encounter near Srinagar, two of them involved in the Pahalgam attack. Twenty-six people were killed when terrorists opened fire at a meadow near the popular tourist town of Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on April 22. A picture of Himanshi Narwal sitting beside her dead husband became the defining image of the attack, which shook the nation. "Sir, I cannot say this is a closure. You can say this is a closure, but it is not a complete closure. Because the terrorist attack that took place that day, where my son, Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, was martyred, it is not just the work of these three men," the father told NDTV. The Army's elite para commandos on Monday gunned down the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack along with two of his associates in an encounter in a forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar in Kashmir. "There will be a chain behind them, a in that chain, the people who planned this, I will not quote anyone's name. Every person who is being investigated by the NIA, all of them are culprits in it. All of them deserve the same punishment. And we will get it," he said. "This is not the work of three": Rajesh Narwal, father of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal who was killed in Pahalgam speaks to NDTV on Operation Mahadev — NDTV (@ndtv) July 29, 2025 Asked about his thoughts on Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike against terror attack in Pahalgam, Mr Narwal said: "I consider it a successful operation. And I want to thank the soldiers of my army, the soldiers of the paramilitary forces, the officers of the police, who have taken part in Operation Mahadev. They have been working with dedication day and night. I salute their bravery and courage." Married just a few days before the Pahalgam attack, 26-year-old Navy officer Vinay Narwal, accompanied by his wife Himanshi, was on a honeymoon in Pahalgam town when terrorists shot him at point-blank range. Recounting the young officer's childhood, the father said, "Since childhood he liked the army uniform, the army vehicles. He liked it since he was very dedicated to his work. And he had a leadership quality since childhood." "He was the leader of everyone. And ultimately, I would say that he was made for defense," his father said.
