Time of India12-05-2025
Mangaluru:
Mohammed Shaleel
, 22, from Deralakatte and currently working in Saudi Arabia, has entered the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest 20 cone slalom dribbling a football (soccer ball) in 11.94 seconds.Cone slalom dribbling in football involves players dribbling a ball in zig zag way through a course of cones placed in a straight pattern in 50cm apart each.Shaleel, currently working in the construction field at Al Jubail, said he is passionate about football and dreams of meeting football legend Cristiano Ronaldo one day.
The youth said he attempted the record in June last year, and it was officially approved on April 28.Interestingly, this is not Shaleel's first world record. Back in 2022, while still a student, he earned a place in the Guinness World Records for executing the fastest nutmeg in 30 seconds.Shaleel is the son of RB Abdul Hameed and Mumtaz Panemangalore. He was passionate about football for over a decade and is an ardent fan of Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri."Though I am not a professional footballer, I have always been deeply passionate about the sport and wanted to contribute to it in some way. It was this drive that led me to explore existing and potential football-related records," he told TOI.During his research as a student, he came across a record previously held by Dele Alli and Tasha Nicole and decided to work towards creating records. "The journey was wonderful so far. It is all about dedicated practice and achieving a milestone. This is my second record, and I have decided not to stop here. I am trying to make more records in many other countries. For this record, I practised continuously for three months," he said.

Top Indian archers to compete in inaugural Archery Premier League

India's top archers, including Deepika Kumari, Dhiraj Bommadevara, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma, will compete in the inaugural Archery Premier League (APL), the national federation said on Monday. As reported by PTI earlier, the six franchise-based competition, billed as a first-of-its-kind global initiative, will bring together leading recurve and compound archers from across the world for an 11-day event in October at the Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi. Apart from the Indian archers, the inaugural APL, which has got the backing from World Archery and the Asian federation, will also see participation from the top-ranked international archers, who will be divided among the six franchises, but their names are yet to be announced. The inaugural season is likely to follow a draft system instead of an auction, with each squad comprising eight members—four men and four women. Teams can include up to two foreign archers, with at least one of them required to be part of the playing four. The recurve and compound archers will shoot 70m and 50m, respectively, in a unique team format under floodlights. The Indian archers were picked based on world rankings as well as Archery Association of India's (AAI) recent selection trials. In recurve, world No. 3 Deepika and world No. 14 Dhiraj headline the field, alongside veterans Tarundeep Rai and Atanu Das. Other women recurve archers include Ankita Bhakat and Bhajan Kaur, while the men's line-up features Neeraj Chauhan, Rahul, Rohit Kumar, Mrinal Chauhan, Sachin Gupta and Krish Kumar. In compound, world record-holder Jyothi Surekha (No. 3) and world No. 9 Rishabh Yadav lead the charge. They are joined by veteran Abhishek (No. 10), Prathamesh Bhalchandra Fuge (No. 11), Priyansh (No. 16) and Parneet Kaur (No. 17). Among others, Aman Saini, Ojas Deotale, Sahil Rajesh Jadhav and Chittibomma Jignas will represent the men, while Prithika Pradeep, Avneet Kaur and Madhura Dhamangaonkar are part of the women's field. 'We are delighted to have the presence of India's best archers in the first season of the Archery Premier League,' AAI president Arjun Munda stated in a release. 'We are confident their presence will drive eyeballs to the sport and ensure a high level of competition. It will further make the league an exciting venture for the fans around the nation.'

Vishal in hunt for freestyle bronze in U20 World Wrestling Championships

Freestyle wrestler Vishal will fight for the bronze medal after losing his 97kg freestyle semifinal bout to UWW grappler Magomedgadzhi Magomedov on the opening day of the U20 World Championships, here on Sunday. The 20-year-old Indian lost the closely-fought semifinal 9-11 and will now take on a yet-to-be-confirmed grappler in the bronze-medal bout. Vishal gave his opponent a tough fight and had the grappler, who was fighting under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag, in all sorts of trouble before Magomedov managed to eke out a narrow win. Magomedov led 10-4 when Vishal mounted a comeback. The Indian scored a takedown and Magomedov was cautioned for a singlet foul, which made it 10-7. As the bout restarted, India appealed for two more points but the referee had already blown the whistle before the control from Vishal. That challenge gave Magomedov enough time to recover and hang on to a slender lead. Earlier in the quarterfinal, Vishal's opponent, Japan's Noah Leibowitz, pulled out due to injury when the Indian was leading 12-9. Sagar (70kg) and Jaspooran (125kg) lost their opening-round bouts to Iran's Ebrahim Esmaeil and UWW's Inal Gagloev respectively. Parvinder Singh (74kg) lost in his quarterfinal bout to Italy's Raul Caso 4-5 on points. Bangladesh likely to replace Pakistan in Asia Cup hockey

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) Bangladesh is likely to replace Pakistan in the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 if the latter fails to confirm participation in the next couple of days, a top Hockey India official told PTI on Monday. The Indian government had already said that it will provide visas to the Pakistani players for Asia Cup, but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has refused to travel citing security concerns. The organisers have already approached Bangladesh to fill up Pakistan's place in the eight-team tournament, but Hockey India said the exact scenario will be clear in the next 48 hours. 'The Indian government has already said that it is will willing to provide visas to Pakistani players but if they don't want to come to India, it's not our problem. Bangladesh has already been invited to participate in case Pakistan doesn't come but we will have to wait for two more days to get the confirmation," the HI official said when quizzed about the situation. 'Neither Pakistan or Bangladesh have confirmed anything to us till now. But Bangladesh are likely replacement for Pakistan," he added. Pakistan's participation in the Asia Cup — a qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup — was uncertain after the military confrontation with India following the Pahalgam terror attack. India had launched Operation Sindoor to destroy terror infrastructure in Pakistan after the terror attack that killed 26 people. PHF had suggested that the tournament be moved out of India to another venue. Besides hosts India, the other participating teams in the Asia Cup are China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman and Chinese Taipei.
