Liverpool will only sign the right player for the right price: Slot

PA Media/dpa London Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has reiterated the club will only sign the right player for the right fee if he wants to join, but refused to be drawn on their position regarding Alexander Isak. Since a £110 million ($148 million) bid was rejected earlier this month, the club have not returned to negotiations although they have never formally walked away from pursuing a deal. Isak's decision to go public on Tuesday, accusing Newcastle of breaking promises and saying he 'can't continue' and 'change is in the best interests of everyone', has intensified speculation about the striker's future. Newcastle's response was to stress: 'We have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.' It adds extra spice for when the two teams meet at St James' Park on Monday, with Isak expected to absent again as he continues to train away from the squad. 'I am happy with the squad but if we think there is a player who can really make us better then this club has always shown they can bring them in,' said Slot, who has already benefited from a £300 million-plus spending spree this summer, offset by more than £200 million of sales. 'But it needs to be everything we want: right transfer fee, right position and the player wants to come to us. 'I don't think (it will be a busy end to the window) because (that would mean) I would be unhappy with the squad and I am happy with the squad. 'I say two players for each positions is ideal, but sometimes less is more so you are not disappointing players.' Slot rejected the suggestion their trip to the north east would be made easier by Isak's absence and the turmoil surrounding the club. 'I don't think they are a club with troubles,' he added. 'I assume Isak is not playing but they still have Anthony Gordon as a nine, they have Anthony Elanga as a right winger and Harvey Barnes from the left - and Jacob Murphy is not even playing. 'This is the Premier League, we all have a lot of options and Newcastle have them as well.' However, Slot's options have been reduced at right-back with new signing Jeremie Frimpong ruled out until after next month's international break with a hamstring injury sustained in their opening victory over Bournemouth. 'The medical team were completely right about Jeremie to tell me that I had to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break and that happened during the game,' he said. 'I think I got criticised a bit for taking him off, didn't I?' Joe Gomez was pressed into action for 18 minutes despite having had just two training sessions after three weeks out with injury and as a result was not able to train three days in a row afterwards. He could still be in contention at Newcastle, with Conor Bradley, named in Northern Ireland's squad for next month's games, only returning to training himself on Thursday. 'At the moment we only have two injuries, but unfortunately it is two in the same position,' said Slot. 'The good thing is we have other players that can play there. Wataru Endo played there for a few minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai has already played there. There are other options we can explore.'

Liverpool's Slot issues Isak warning as Newcastle fallout rumbles

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said on Thursday the Premier League champions will only sign the right player for the right price, but refused to be drawn on the club's position regarding unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Since Liverpool's reported 110-million-pound ($148m) bid for the 25-year-old Sweden international was rejected earlier this month, they have not held further talks, but equally do not appear to have given up hope of bringing Isak to Anfield. Newcastle, for their part, are reported to be demanding a British record transfer fee of 150 million pounds ($201.1m) for Isak. The forward's decision to go public on Tuesday, accusing Newcastle of breaking promises and saying he 'can't continue' and 'change is in the best interests of everyone', has intensified speculation about Isak's future. Newcastle's response was to insist: 'We have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.' The back-and-forth exchanges have all added another layer of interest to Liverpool's match at Newcastle's St James' Park on Monday, with Isak expected to be absent again as he continues to train away from the squad. Slot, speaking at a pre-match news conference on Thursday, said, 'I am happy with the squad, but if we think there is a player who can really make us better, then this club has always shown they can bring them in.' The Dutch manager, who has seen Liverpool's 300-million-plus-pound ($402.1m) spending spree during the break, offset by more than 200 million pounds ($268.1m) worth of sales, added, 'But it needs to be everything we want: right transfer fee, right position and the player wants to come to us. 'I don't think [it will be a busy end to the summer transfer window] because [that would mean] I would be unhappy with the squad, and I am happy with the squad. 'I say two players for each positions is ideal, but sometimes, less is more, so you are not disappointing players.' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said ahead of the new season that Isak 'controlled' his own future. Slot, meanwhile, rejected the suggestion Liverpool's trip to the northeast would be made easier by Isak's absence and the ensuing turmoil it has caused Newcastle. 'I don't think they are a club with troubles,' he said. 'I assume Isak is not playing, but they still have Anthony Gordon as a nine, they have Anthony Elanga as a right winger, and Harvey Barnes from the left – and Jacob Murphy is not even playing. 'This is the Premier League, we all have a lot of options and Newcastle have them, as well.' But Slot's options at right-back have been reduced, with new signing Jeremie Frimpong ruled out until after next month's international break with a hamstring injury sustained in their opening victory over Bournemouth. Joe Gomez was pressed into action for 18 minutes despite having had just two training sessions after three weeks out with injury. Gomez could still be in contention at Newcastle, with Conor Bradley only returning to training on Thursday. 'At the moment we only have two injuries, but unfortunately, it is two in the same position,' said Slot. 'The good thing is we have other players that can play there. 'Wataru Endo played there for a few minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai has already played there. There are other options we can explore.'

Premier League breaks record summer transfer spending figures

The Premier League's transfer spending spree has reached record levels with more than a week of trading to go as promoted Leeds United signed AC Milan forward Noah Okafor for a reported 18 million pounds ($24.17m). Okafor's arrival at Elland Road on Thursday, following Bournemouth's signing of Amine Adli from Bayer Leverkusen, pushed the total spend beyond the 2.36 billion pounds ($3.7bn) splashed out in the 2023 summer window, according to Several other big-money deals between now and the closing of the window, including the likely sale of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace to Arsenal, mean spending by the world's most lucrative football league could even hit 3 billion pounds ($4.03bn). While the list of big spenders is topped by the likes of champions Liverpool ($387.8m), Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, even clubs with smaller resources have been splashing the cash. Six clubs have broken their transfer records, including Liverpool paying 116 million pounds ($156m) to Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. Burnley set a new club record by paying 25 million pounds ($33.5m) for Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, while fellow promoted club Sunderland did the same by signing midfielder Habib Diarra for 26 million pounds ($34.9m) from Strasbourg, part of a 142 million pounds ($190.5m) squad-strengthening drive. Despite being outside the Premier League for eight seasons, Sunderland have spent more than any club in Europe's other top leagues apart from Spain's Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Nottingham Forest broke their transfer record twice during the current window in which they have spent almost 150 million pounds ($201.3m), including the signings of Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna and winger Omari Hutchison from Ipswich Town. Spending by England's Premier League this summer is more than that of Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Spain's La Liga combined. Serie A is second on the spending list with about 783 million pounds ($1.05bn) on player investment, although the league's clubs have recouped more than that in sales. The Premier League's muscle in the transfer market is largely explained by huge broadcasting deals. This season is the first of a four-year domestic TV rights deal worth a record 6.7 billion pounds ($8.99bn).
