Filipino schools in the UAE came together for an exciting display of athleticism, unity, and sportsmanship at the first season of the Directors Cup 2025.
Held on Thursday, March 27, the event brought four prominent Filipino schools into an action-packed tournament: Far Eastern Private School (Al Shahba and Branch campuses), The New Filipino Private School, and Universal Philippine School (Al Ain). The opening ceremony set the tone for the day, with a heartfelt welcome from Assistant Managing Director Ms. Nawal Al Ansari, followed by the official Declaration of Opening by School Operations Manager Mr. Richard R. Zulueta.
The competition, featuring basketball for boys and volleyball for girls, provided a thrilling opportunity for educators, parents, and students to come together, celebrate their Filipino heritage, and enjoy friendly yet fierce competition.
The day's events included a parade, an oath of sportsmanship, and the traditional lighting of the torch, marking the official start of the games and highlighting the spirit of unity and camaraderie among the participants.
The Directors Cup 2025 aimed to strengthen the sense of community among Filipino families and schools in the UAE, promoting teamwork and sportsmanship both on and off the court.

The race that has no finish: Ilonggo endurance star Jivee Tolentino shines in Italy's Backyard Ultra
Filipino ultrarunner Jivee Tolentino once again proved his endurance and determination by completing 160.8 kilometers in 24 hours at the Backyard Ultra Livata held in Subiaco, Italy, from May 31 to June 2. This extreme endurance event follows a unique setup: participants must run a 6.7 km loop every hour until only one runner remains. Wearing Bib Number 1, the 47-year-old Ilonggo native, now based in Ireland, placed 15th out of 146 international participants. There is no set finish line in this format. He had flown into Rome just a day earlier with his wife and support crew, Olga, before immediately joining the challenge. He ran through harsh conditions — from the heat of the day to cold 6°C nights — while battling exhaustion and lack of sleep. Despite these, Tolentino powered through 24 hours of running, building on his growing reputation in the ultrarunning world. Among those inspired was Jacob How, a 43-year-old Filipino from Bulacan now living in Rome. Jacob completed 93.8 kilometers and said, 'I was just happy to run alongside legends like Jivee. Marcos hails Gilas Youth for sweeping SEABA U16 qualifiers, clinching gold
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Saturday congratulated the Gilas Pilipinas Youth team for their dominant performance in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers, where they went undefeated and captured the gold medal with a 70–40 win over Indonesia in the finals held in Pampanga. 'Isang malaking saludo sa Gilas Pilipinas Youth,' Marcos said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), commending their 6–0 sweep. 'Congratulations on your dominant 6–0 run and the gold medal at the U-16 SEABA Qualifiers. This is clear proof that the talent and determination of the Filipino youth is unmatched. We support you in your next battle in the FIBA Asia Cup,' the President added. Gilas Pilipinas Youth came out strong, outscoring Indonesia 21–5 in the opening quarter and building a 41–20 lead by halftime. They stretched their lead to 59–25 late in the third quarter after a 6–0 scoring run powered by Andwele Cabañero, Jeremiah Antolin Jr., and Jhustin Hallare. Indonesia struggled to keep pace in the fourth quarter, allowing the Philippines to complete a tournament sweep. Hallare led the Philippines with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Carl Gabriel de los Reyes posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Ethan Tan-Chi and Evaraigne Cruz added nine and seven points, respectively. With the championship win, Gilas Pilipinas Youth secured a spot in the upcoming FIBA U16 Asia Cup in Mongolia. They will be joined by fellow Southeast Asian qualifiers Indonesia and bronze medalist Malaysia.
