Formula One veteran Fernando Alonso and Liam Lawson were seen laughing together after the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, a sign that the two drivers had settled their differences following a heated clash during last year's United States Grand Prix.
The 2024 sprint race in Austin saw Alonso and Lawson battle for 16th place when the latter defended his position aggressively. The clash then spilled onto the pit lane after the race. Lawson revealed later that Alonso threatened to "screw" him during qualifying. Speaking after the race, the Kiwi driver said:
"I understand he had a pretty horrible race so I can understand why he's upset.

"It is what it is, it's part of it – it doesn't bother me."
He added:
"He said he would screw me, and I guess he kept his word. I don't know. He was really upset. I'm not sure why - we were racing for P16, and I don't know why he was so upset.
"It is what it is. Hopefully, he can get over it. And we'll move forward."
Alonso said he avoided a big crash with Lawson. He explained:
"On the straight, I think we nearly crashed, like I did with Lance two years ago, at 300 km/h or something, and then, the way he squeezed, out of the corners, to the track limits itself, in lap one of [19]."
He added:
"Everyone on track is behaving as he wants, and for me, today was unnecessary.
"Everyone can have different opinions. I'm OK with that. You know, it's 24 races, so you meet somewhere in the journey."
Tensions escalated during the Miami sprint race this year when Lawson made contact with Alonso's AMR25, causing him to spin and crash into the wall.
Now though, the pair of drivers were seen chatting happily after the race at the Red Bull Ring, where Lawson secured an impressive P6 finish, while Alonso finished seventh. According to MARCA, Alonso approached Lawson to congratulate him on his points finish. Lawson laughed when the Spaniard opened up on how he was able to remain close to him in the DRS zones. Alonso said:
"From Turn 4 to 9, I treated it as if it were a time trial, and then at Turn 9, I caught the first detection zone (DRS detection zone), and from there, I used DRS until Turn 1, I used detection again and got DRS until Turn 3. And the same at Turn 4. Then until the new one, like a time trial, and so on for 60 laps. Like a cycling time trial, but without any relays."

Bayer Leverkusen star criticises Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid move

Bayer Leverkusen star Jonas Hofmann has shared his thoughts on his former head coach Xabi Alonso, claiming that the now-Real Madrid boss did not meet his expectations as a manager. Alonso was appointed Real Madrid's head coach in May following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso started his managerial stint at Leverkusen in 2022 and earned well-deserved praise for their historic Bundesliga title win in 2023–24. While Alonso and Real Madrid are preparing for the upcoming season, it appears that the Spanish manager has not been in everyone's good books at Leverkusen. Hofmann recently expressed his opinion of Alosno as a coach, during which he indicated that the 43-year-old may not have had the same equation with all the players of his former squad. What did Jonas Hofmann say about current Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso? After making 46 appearances and registering eight goals and 12 assists in 2023-24, Hofmann featured in only 17 matches last season. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp The 33-year-old midfielder stated that there was a lack of 'open and direct communication' from Alonso's side and told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger, "I expect a coach to address something directly when he notices something. I expect open and direct communication. A coach shouldn't wait longer than two weeks for this, because as a coach, I want the players to be in top shape to raise the training level," as per GOAL. "There's always a need for competition, that's clear. I would have expected a bit more from the coach." Hofmann went on to say that he would have considered a move away from Leverkusen if Alonso was still in charge. However, with new manager Erik ten Hag in charge, the German star is looking at the upcoming campaign as a 'new opportunity.' "New coach, new opportunity. I'm a Bundesliga kid. I'm fighting my way back. I feel comfortable, but under Xabi Alonso, I probably would have considered a move." "Personally, I'm putting last season in a box and don't want to take it out again. It was very disappointing for me, what happened there and how it played out. That's not what I'm aiming for." Hofmann, whose contract with the Bundesliga club is valid until the summer of 2027, will be hoping to make a place high up in Ten Hag's pecking order for the 2025/26 season. Leverkusen are set to kick off the new campaign with their match against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on August 15. Jonas Hofmann opens up on disappointment under Xabi Alonso, eyes fresh start with Ten Hag at Bayer Leverkusen

By Bhavya Rai Published on July 24, 2025, 14:41 EDT Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Jonas Hofmann has voiced his dissatisfaction with former head coach Xabi Alonso, revealing that the current Real Madrid manager failed to meet his expectations during their time together in Germany. Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, earned widespread acclaim for transforming the club into a dominant force. However, not everyone in the squad shared the same admiration for the Spanish tactician. In a candid interview with Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger , Hofmann criticized Alonso for a lack of clear communication, suggesting the coach didn't always foster an environment of transparency and mutual respect. 'I expect a coach to address something directly when he notices something,' Hofmann said. 'There should be open and direct communication. A coach shouldn't wait longer than two weeks because I want to be in top shape to raise the training level. I would have expected a bit more from the coach.' Hofmann, who had a productive 2023–24 season with 46 appearances, eight goals, and 12 assists, saw his role diminish significantly under Alonso last season, featuring in only 17 matches. This limited involvement left him feeling sidelined and unvalued, prompting him to reflect on his place within the team. The 33-year-old revealed that he would have considered leaving Leverkusen had Alonso remained in charge. However, with Erik ten Hag now appointed as Leverkusen's new head coach, Hofmann is approaching the 2025–26 campaign as a clean slate. 'New coach, new opportunity. I'm a Bundesliga kid. I'm fighting my way back. I feel comfortable, but under Xabi Alonso, I probably would have considered a move,' he admitted. 'Personally, I'm putting last season in a box and don't want to take it out again. It was very disappointing for me, what happened there and how it played out. That's not what I'm aiming for.' Despite the sour note left by Alonso's tenure, at least from Hofmann's perspective, there's a sense of renewed purpose as the midfielder prepares to impress under Ten Hag. With a contract at Leverkusen running until summer 2027, Hofmann is determined to reestablish himself as a key figure in the squad. Leverkusen will begin their 2025–26 campaign on August 15, when they face SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. For Hofmann, it's not just a new season, it's a shot at redemption.
