Belfast Giants confirm return of most successful coach for eighth season behind bench
The 41-year-old, who only five days ago saw his No.47 jersey retired by the Giants during his testimonial game, has agreed a new one-year deal covering the 2025/26 campaign to remain head coach.
It is a logical move for both parties, Keefe continuing his association with the club into its 15th year as a player and coach, while the Giants have the man who has delivered ten trophies in seven seasons back leading them again.
Nor was it much of a surprise, the Ontario native tipping his hand significantly by not only taking part in the Champions League draw for next season but declaring after his testimonial that he couldn't wait to get the new campaign under way, while he has repeatedly declared that it would only take a substantial offer or an unmissable opportunity for him to seek employment outside of Belfast.
It is also expected that Keefe will have his three lieutenants, George Awada, Jeff Mason and Rob Stewart, alongside him for the new season as well, however that is yet to be confirmed.
But Keefe is the key piece behind the bench and, although they are yet to officially announce a player for the new season, having the four-time Elite League Coach of the Year back in situ is already an excellent starting point.
A born winner, Keefe has won at least one trophy in five of his seven seasons with the Giants – including the 2019/20 season that was halted prematurely due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic – including the Grand Slam in the 2022/23 campaign.
The former Giants captain, who won two Elite League titles as a player, has lifted the League crown four times since taking over in 2017, as well as five Challenge Cups and one Play-Off title, while he has also taken the organisation to three further Play-Off Finals.
Keefe burst onto the scene as a coach by winning the Challenge Cup in his first season in charge, defeating the Cardiff Devils in the Final at Ice Arena Wales, and then had an outstanding sophomore season in 2018/19 by missing out on the Grand Slam by one game, defeating the Guildford Flames in the Cup Final and famously winning the League while celebrating their end-of-season awards dinner, only to lose to the Devils in the Play-Off Final.
Since the pandemic, the Giants have dominated the Elite League under Keefe by winning seven of the 12 trophies on offer, once again missing out on the Grand Slam by a game in 2022 after losing the Play-Off Final to the Devils having already done the League and Cup double again, before finally completing the clean sweep a season later, this time defeating the Devils in the final game of the season to add to another League and Cup success.
After watching the Sheffield Steelers do the same two seasons ago, the Giants returned to their perch last season with a phenomenal League win that went down to the final game of the season, added to their Cup joy against the Devils back in March, although the Welsh side would have the last laugh by winning their Play-Off Semi-Final this time around.
Keefe will also lead the Giants in the Champions League for the fourth time this season, their reward for winning the League title, with the organisation determined to be involved in the Play-Offs having missed out on the knockouts by a point two years ago.

Martin Zubimendi transfer ditched as Arsenal submit fresh Viktor Gyokeres bid
Arsenal's summer transfer window is gathering pace once again, with Martin Zubimendi closing in on a move to the Gunners and fresh hope a deal can be agreed for Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal's summer transfer window looks to be turning a corner after some early setbacks. The Gunners have already completed a £5million move for Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. They have now set their sights on finally sealing a long-awaited move for Martin Zubimendi. Negotiations between the Gunners and Real Sociedad have been ongoing for some time, but the move was derailed by late interest from Real Madrid. Madrid's interest took Sociedad by surprise and prompted concern at the Emirates that they would miss out on the midfielder. But Los Blancos now appear to have ditched their attempt to hijack the deal. That provides a huge boost for Mikel Arteta, who is now also lining up a move for Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal are preparing a new bid for the Sporting Lisbon striker, who is keen to move on. But in a blow to Arteta's summer plans, one of his targets has revealed he is not looking to make a move in this window. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal transfer news. Madrid ditch Zubimendi hijack Real Madrid have decided to move on from Martin Zubimendi, in a major boost to Arsenal's hopes of signing the midfielder. The Gunners have been attempting to complete their move for the Spaniard all summer but it was derailed by late interest from Madrid. But according to AS, Madrid have now decided to ditch their attempts to hijack the deal. Los Blancos believe that Zubimendi is 'escaping their orbit' and have already begun the process of considering alternative options. One of those options is to not make any new midfield signing, depending on Dean Huijsen's performance at the Club World Cup. Arsenal are now putting the final touches on sealing their move for Zubimendi. Hato rejects move Ajax star Jorrel Hato has insisted he is happy with life in Amsterdam and is not looking to make a move this summer. Hato had emerged as a target for Arsenal, but the defender has made it clear that he sees his future as being at Ajax. "In the Dutch league you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top", he said. "How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here. "I still have plenty of time. I don't think: I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years," Hato continues his story. What is the youngster's ultimate football dream? "That is winning a World Cup. You want to be there when it happens." Fresh Gyokeres bid submitted Arsenal are set to submit a fresh bid for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres. The striker has emerged as the Gunners' top target for the summer window as they look to bring in a new striker. According to Maisfutebol, Sporting turned down Arsenal's opening £55million offer for the Swedish star. The Premier League side are now set to up that offer though, with the club ready to submit a fresh bid that would exceed £59.5m. The deal would comprise an upfront fee of £51m with another £8.5m in add-ons. There is said to be 'growing optimisim' among Gyokeres' representatives that an agreement can be reached. Manchester United's chase for Bryan Mbeumo has come under increased pressure as the Red Devils enter the race for another striker in their bid to strengthen Ruben Amorim's side Manchester United got off to an early start in the transfer window by agreeing a deal for Matheus Cunha. Now the Brazil international has been officially confirmed as the newest Red Devil but the club's business is unlikely to end there. Ruben Amorim will hope to rejuvinate his team when the transfer window reopens on June 16. The club are hoping to strengthen their head coach's forward line and the team as a whole. United have already confirmed a number of departures from Old Trafford, and more could follow. The likes of Casemiro faces an uncertain few weeks as he enters the final 12 months of his contract. It will not be an easy summer however, with the club having already missed out on Liam Delap to Chelsea, and sales required to boost funds for incoming deals. There is a lot of work to do. Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news and rumours around Old Trafford below. Mbeumo U-turn Bryan Mbeumo has interest in a move to Tottenham and has been the subject of discussions between Brentford and Spurs. Mbeumo had declared his desire to move to Manchester United earlier this month. Now, the arrival of Thomas Frank in north London as Ange Postecoglou's successor could prove persuasive to Mbeumo. The 25-year-old is said to be more intrigued by a move across London following the appointment of Frank as head coach. Mirror Football exclusively reported that Frank told Spurs he wanted them to rival United for Mbeumo and now the Lilywhites may hold two key advantages.. The Bees forward, who scored 20 goals last term, would be able to play in the Champions League at Spurs under a familiar face in Frank. Next four transfers Manchester United still want to complete four more incoming transfers after signing Matheus Cunha. The Red Devils want to land Bryan Mbeumo, a new striker, midfielder and goalkeeper for Ruben Amorim to work with. Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen are among the names linked to Old Trafford, while the club also want to add competition for Andre Onana. Christian Eriksen's exit could be followed by Casemiro with Amorim keen to add physical instensity to his squad. Man Utd enter race Manchester United have joined Chelsea and Liverpool in the race for Hugo Ekitike, according to reports. The Eintracht Frankfurt striker enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 as he bagged 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances. United are said to have enquired over the terms of a prospective deal. The Bundesliga side have stood firm on their valuation of the 22-year-old thus far, insisting on a €100m (85m) fee. "If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us," Krosche told Wiesbadener Kurier when discussing Ekitike. "We don't have to sell Hugo.'
