in Kolkata, scored a perfect 100% in her ISC Class XII examinations — a rare feat in itself. But it's not just her academic brilliance that's drawing admiration. Srijani has refused to use a surname in any official capacity, stating that her only religion is "humanity."
She believes that true equality can't exist unless we rise above divisive identities rooted in caste, creed, and religion.
'I am against all kinds of inequality—social, economic, or religious,' she told the Times of India. Her philosophy is simple but profound: in a truly evolved society, no one should be known by the baggage of inherited labels.
A Family of Freethinkers
Her decision didn't emerge in isolation. Srijani's upbringing in a progressive, intellectual household has shaped her beliefs. Her mother, Gopa Mukherjee, an assistant professor at Gurudas College, and her father, Debasish Goswami, a renowned mathematician and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardee, have long stood against patriarchy and caste hierarchy.
Interestingly, when applying for their children's birth certificates, the parents didn't include any surname. 'We wanted our children to grow up free — not burdened by caste or religion,' said her mother.
Walking the Talk
Srijani doesn't just preach ideals — she lives them. Ahead of her board exams, she made a formal request to omit her surname in registration forms, an act of quiet defiance that reflects deep conviction.

The principal of her school, Ranjan Mitter, backed her decision, saying, 'As long as the law is satisfied, we support the family's wishes.'
She also took part in the "Reclaim the Night" protest in August 2024, a massive demonstration following the tragic rape and murder of a PGT doctor. Srijani and her family were among the thousands demanding justice and women's safety, showing that her activism extends beyond the classroom.
Simplicity and Brilliance in Equal Measure
Despite her national recognition and political visitors — including State Power Minister Aroop Biswas who personally visited her home to felicitate her — Srijani remains grounded. Her dream is to study physics or mathematics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Her focus remains firmly on learning and contributing meaningfully to society.

Patiala: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday flagged off the first train with a delegation of 500 women sarpanches and panches heading to Maharashtra to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded and participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. Terming it as a 'red letter day', the CM said the delegation departed from the state on Wednesday for Maharashtra to participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. He said the delegation comprised representatives from high-performing panchayats. The purpose of the visit was to enable Punjab's women sarpanches and panches to gain new experiences through mutual discussions with panchayat representatives from other states, he said, adding that this would enable these elected representatives to further ensure the holistic development of their respective villages. "The panchayats are the 'Pillars of Democracy' and in villages, schools, dispensaries, veterinary hospitals, and other public welfare arrangements are directly managed under the supervision of the panchayats. In light of this, the move was crucial, as all the departments related to village development function under panchayat oversight," said Mann and expressed hope that the visit would boost the confidence of women representatives and help them gain new insights for the development of villages. Meanwhile, the CM said the govt would also facilitate these women to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded. He reiterated that this initiative was undertaken to commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, adding that the govt would bear the entire cost of boarding and lodging for these women. Mann said this special train had been arranged to facilitate their visit to the sacred site, adding that two more such trains would be sent shortly. He emphasised that Nanded Sahib holds immense spiritual importance for every Punjabi, and many aspired to visit it at least once in their lifetime. He added that these women exemplify the spirit of women empowerment , and the govt wanted to honour their contributions by enabling them to undertake this pilgrimage. 1 2 Kolkata: The city police will deploy close to 5,000 officers to secure the area and ensure smooth movement of citizens between Aug 14 and the afternoon of Aug 15, given the host of activities planned during those 36 hours. This will mean a significant presence of officers, especially at all the "Reclaim The Night" programmes on Aug 14, similar to their presence at the Independence Day celebration events where chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend the same evening. About 2,000 of the 5,000 cops will guard the main programme zone and its approaches The main deployment will be at the Red Road-Kidderpore Road programme on the morning of Aug 15 when the Tricolour will be unfurled by Banerjee. Trump delaying tariffs on China while targeting India shows our lack of strategic tech and manufacturing The chip war between US and China is back on the table with Washington reportedly working out a deal to take 15% from the sale of Nvidia's and AMD's AI chips to China. This effectively makes US govt a business partner to Nvidia and AMD, and comes after Washington allowed resumption of chip sales to China. The latter had been halted by Trump in April as part of his trade tussle with Beijing. However, he was forced to lift the ban after China retaliated with its own ban on rare earth exports to US. Beijing has now sent notices to Chinese companies discouraging the use of Nvidia chips citing security concerns. Parallelly, however, US and China have decided to extend their tariff truce till Nov. This is in stark contrast to Trump's approach to India, which is now facing the prospect of 50% tariff on its exports to US. The entire episode holds out two key lessons. First, the tech war is here to stay. Whether it's US chip sales to China or China trying to undermine tech manufacturing in India as highlighted by its recent pullout of Chinese engineers from Foxconn's India plants, this is a strategic sector that every country will try to leverage or weaponise. And with the advent of AI, India's expertise in software and coding is no longer that attractive. Therefore, India must not waver in its determination to master bedrock tech like semiconductor manufacturing and design, as well as AI. Countries like Estonia are integrating AI in their education systems. Plus, the recent spat between Elon Musk and OpenAI boss Sam Altman over listing in Apple's App Store shows how fiercely companies are competing over AI tech. India must not lag behind. Second, Trump's targeting India with big tariffs because he feels it doesn't have anything strategic to offer. That's not the case with China given its manufacturing muscle. Similarly, Taiwan's cutting-edge semiconductor industry makes it vital to tech supply chains, and therefore, a prime candidate for tariff exemptions. India too needs to cement a crucial spot in global manufacturing by investing heavily in domestic R&D, technical education and AI. It's work that can't be delayed.
