KSrelief offers vital medical support to children affected by hearing loss in Kenya

Arab News18-04-2025

Riyadh: Saudi aid agency KSrelief has launched the Sama'a Volunteer Program, a Saudi-led program for cochlear implants and auditory rehabilitation in Kenya, offering vital medical support to children affected by hearing loss.
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center's media department told Arab News on Friday that the program will provide 25 cochlear implant surgeries at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi and support 50 families with post-operative training in speech therapy and auditory rehabilitation.
'A team of 19 specialized medical volunteers will carry out the procedures and training over the coming days,' said KSrelief.
The launch event was attended by Saudi Ambassador to Kenya Khalid bin Abdullah Al-Salman; Mutahi Kagwe, Kenya's minister of health; and Jibril Ibrahim Abdullahi, ambassador of Somalia to Kenya.
Children from Somalia are also among the expected beneficiaries, highlighting the program's regional scope.
Commenting on the program, Dr. Aqeel Al-Ghamdi, assistant supervisor-general for planning and development at KSrelief, said: 'Hearing loss affects each child differently. Some are born with it, others lose it later, but what they share is the potential to connect, learn and thrive when given the right care. That is what this program is here to support.'
The Sama'a Saudi Program is part of KSrelief's broader efforts to expand access to specialized healthcare for vulnerable communities across Africa and beyond.
The Kenyan Ministry of Health posted on X: 'Cabinet Secretary of Health Aden Duale launched the Volunteer Medical Porgram for Cochlear Implantation and Audio Rehabilitation for Children at a Nairobi hotel, in partnership with KSrelief. The initiative brings together advanced technology and skills transfer to support children with hearing loss.
'Aligned with Kenya's National Ear and Hearing Care Strategic Plan (2023–2028) and UHC goals, the program is part of efforts to reverse the causes of childhood hearing loss through a comprehensive, person-centered approach.'
Duale highlighted the inclusion of hearing devices in the Kenya Essential Medical Supplies List (2023) and partial coverage for cochlear implants under the SHA benefits package.
The donation targeting 1,000 children across Africa has so far seen the implantation of the top-of-the-range hearing aids to 30 children aged between 3-5 years in Kenya (15) and Somalia (15). The implants correct severe to profound deafness.
Duale highlighted the importance of partnerships in strengthening ear and hearing care, and building a strong, inclusive health system.
He described the collaboration as a symbol of unity in restoring dignity, opportunity, and hope for children and families who need it most.

Over 23,000 buses deployed while Mashaer Train transports 604,000 pilgrims

Saudi Gazette Report MINA — More than 23,000 buses were deployed across three shuttle routes, supplemented by traditional modes of transportation during this year's Hajj, according to the control room at the Public Transport Center of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites. This effort, part of the largest transport fleet operating in a single area worldwide, achieved a record time for Tawaf Al-Ifadah, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and precise operational coordination. Moreover, the Mashaer Metro Train maintained its efficient performance, transporting over 604,000 pilgrims since its launch of operation for this year's Hajj on Tuesday. These were distributed across three main movements: Movement A with more than 27,000 passengers, Movement B with 283,000, and Movement C—the highest—with 294,000, reflecting the system's strong operational efficiency. In the health sector, the Ministry of Health continued to provide integrated services through its facilities across the holy sites. The number of health services provided exceeded 125,573, including advanced procedures such as 216 cardiac catheterizations and 18 open-heart surgeries, all performed efficiently by qualified Saudi medical personnel. This outcome confirms the high level of health preparedness and the development of national medical capabilities. In the same context, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reported that it has conducted over 5.5 million electronic readings of the Nusuk Card as part of its technical plans to enhance pilgrim services and improve organizational safety. Meanwhile, the Pilgrims Care Center, through the unified number 1966, has provided more than 310,000 services since the beginning of the season, including inquiries and direct support. Additionally, field teams from the Compliance Centers have carried out over 65,000 inspection tours of service providers to reinforce compliance and improve performance quality. These integrated efforts reflect the strong coordination among various entities involved in Hajj, under the guidance of the wise leadership and in line with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to advance the Hajj system, harness modern technology, enhance the pilgrim experience, and enable them to perform their rituals in a safe, organized environment prepared to the highest international standards.

Drones Successfully Transport Medicines between Hospitals during Hajj 2025

The Makkah Health Cluster announced that the pilot operation of a drone-powered medication transport program between healthcare centers and hospitals has succeeded in the holy sites, according to Sabq News. This success represents a remarkable milestone in boosting the efficiency of healthcare services during Hajj 2025. The process consists of several stages, starting with the preparation stage in which authorities determine the required quantities and contact with healthcare facilities. Then, the program employs the latest technologies in compliance with the requirements of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. Therefore, medicines, medical supplies, and laboratory equipment can be easily reserved, dispensed, and delivered to healthcare facilities in the holy sites. To ensure that the process runs properly, the authorities can control the drone through a monitoring screen. Interior Ministry: Hajj success a shared responsibility as pilgrims arrive in Mina

Saudi Gazette report MINA — Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior emphasized on Wednesday that the success of the Hajj season is a shared responsibility, calling on all parties to adhere strictly to official regulations. Security and organizational preparations are in full effect to ensure smooth pilgrim movement between the holy sites. In a press briefing, Ministry of Interior security spokesperson Col. Talal Al-Shalhoub confirmed that pilgrims had been safely transported to Mina to observe the Day of Tarwiyah, in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). 'We are utilizing advanced technologies across all sectors to ensure the safety and service of pilgrims. There are no challenges we cannot overcome,' Al-Shalhoub said. 'Our efforts stem from the deep-rooted values of Saudi society—our security personnel serve without seeking reward except from God.' He underscored that the success of the Hajj pilgrimage is a collective responsibility, urging everyone to comply with safety instructions, adhere to scheduled group movement times, and respect approved transportation plans. He also warned of legal consequences for unauthorized transport of pilgrims. Al-Shalhoub revealed that authorities have issued 357 administrative decisions against 397 individuals involved in violating Hajj transport regulations. He added that anyone issuing visitor visas to those attempting to perform Hajj without permits would also be held accountable. Dr. Ghassan Al-Nouaimi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, reiterated Saudi Arabia's welcome to the pilgrims, noting the arrival of over 1.5 million pilgrims from abroad. He said more than 94,000 employees and 3,000 volunteers are serving the pilgrims this year. Al-Nouaimi projected that over one million pilgrims would arrive in Mina by the end of Wednesday, the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. He emphasized the importance of complying with the official pilgrim movement schedules and avoiding walking between the holy sites outside approved plans. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has also launched an updated version of the 'Nusuk' card with enhanced security features, linked to the Nusuk and Tawakkalna apps. Carrying the card is mandatory for all pilgrims during their movements in the holy sites and the Grand Mosque. He also highlighted that 97% of service providers were found compliant following more than 62,000 inspection tours of pilgrim accommodations. In addition, the operational capacity of the Mataf (circumambulation area) has been raised to accommodate 107,000 pilgrims per hour.
