Malaysia's heavy metal boys are back - legendary group XPDC aims to rock it up in the 'MetalKestra' concert on Nov 8
With over four decades of experience in the local music scene, making history after history through their work and still being considered the greatest heavy metal rock band ever born in the 80s, XPDC has promised fans an unforgettable night on November 8.
Aptly named "XPDC MetalKestra", the concert is backed by Republic Mokhmah Records. Team leader and lead guitarist Izo said their concert this time will also have a backing of a full orchestra set-up.
On top of that, the concert producers are also offering three personalised electric guitars for the fans at the super concert. One will be represented via a lucky draw, and the other two guitars for the best-dressed female and male fans at the show.

Back in 1998, the group won many admirers with an amazing show at the XPDC Konsert Raksasa at Stadium Negara and also in Shah Aam, where a total of more than 50,000 watched them perform.
This year, they aim to recreate that magic led by lead guitarist Izo, the original member since 1988, together with Eddie (bass), Arif (guitar), Lola (drummer) and Mamu (lead vocals).
Izo, whose real name is Mohd Zulkifly Nik Hussin, himself turning 61 this year, is considered among the foremost guitarists in the game in the country over the last four decades.
"The team from 1988 and 1998 and now are very much different. I admit that. But our music is always the same to its core. That will never change. We were the first heavy metal guys, and we will always be that. And you will see that in our concert this year.
"We will also make sure Ali, another founding member of XPDC, is present at the concert too. We will see if he can even join us on stage. But all that depends on his health, too."
Ali of XPDC is also a household name in Malaysian music, said to be among the best rock vocalists in the business. But he has not been well with heart issues in recent times.
However, Izo said he will make sure Ali joins them at the concert, but whether he will perform with them or not will be decided much later.
Meanwhile, Musa dari Republic Mokhmah Records said his team are very excited and honoured to be part of the show as the concert producers.
"First and foremost, I would like to say that I'm a very big fan of these guys. I have been listening to them since I was a kid, and it is an honour to be able to work with these super rockers," said Musa.
"And in honour of these guys, we promise the best of set-up and background that will honour the legacy of XPDC. It will be a show that one will not forget, come Nov 8 and also in the future."
"XPDC are among the stars who introduced 'Rock Kapak' to Malaysian music fans. And they are still proving this genre is far from over. They just keep rocking, and Malaysians keep enjoying their music."
Meanwhile, XPDC described the "MetalKestra" theme, which combines the metal genre with orchestral playing, as the right choice, as they wanted to present something fresh but still within XPDC's strong genre.
'Fans will not only enjoy the heavy metal that is synonymous with XPDC, but the orchestral combination will add to the richness of the songs that will be performed live to the fans.
'XPDC Metalkestra is also our appreciation for the spirit of the fans who have never lost and supported us through many ups and downs over the past four decades.
"This concert is also a benchmark that XPDC will not stop here,' said drummer Lola, who is also a veteran of the band and has been with them since 1997.
The group members also promised fans that they will be singing songs from the four decades that the band has been famous for.
"And you can bet our famous songs like 'Apa Nak Di Kata, Nafisa, Kita Peng Yu, Hidup Bersama, Hijau Bumi Tuhan and CT Cinta Kenangan Silam' will be played for the fans," said Izo and Lola.
Tickets for the show are priced at RM198 (Cat 4 - Samurai -- Normal numbered seating) ; RM338 (Cat 3 – Brutal -- VIP numbered seating, tshirt & poster) ; RM138 (Cat 2 – Darjah Satu -- Free standing) ; RM168 (Cat 1 – Kita Peng-yu -- f ront row standing) ; and RM5,008 (Royal box - 10 pax, meet & greet, goodie bag s ) .

Stefanus wins RM50,000 grant for school
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 Text Size: Stefanus, left, Fadzliaton Zainudin, Deputy Director of the Educational Resources and Technology Division at the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Muhammad Hamka Eallie, Headmaster of SK Pendidikan Khas (P) Kota Kinabalu and Josephine Tan, Campus Director of Taylor's College. Kota Kinabalu: Music teacher, Stefanus Lucas, from SK Pendidikan Khas (P) Kota Kinabalu was recently recognised with Malaysia's top educator honour for his work with special needs students. He was awarded the RISE Educator Award 2025, earning RM5, 000 personally and securing RM50, 000 in funding for his school. Advertisement The award, organised by Taylor's College, celebrates educators making exceptional impact in Malaysian classrooms. Working with visually and hearing-impaired students, Stefanus has revolutionised music education by establishing a specialised music room and forming a student boy band despite limited resources. His innovative approach gives students with disabilities a platform to express themselves and build confidence through music. 'To many, music may seem like a luxury but to my students, it is a lifeline,' said Stefanus. Advertisement 'It is how they express emotions, connect with others and begin to believe in their own worth,' he added. The competition drew over 1,000 nominations nationwide and attracted more than 65,000 public votes. Five finalists were selected through a combination of public voting and evaluation by a distinguished panel including officials from the Ministry of Education. Stefanus plans to use the funding to create Sabah's first student ensemble combining traditional and modern instruments, and to build a dedicated music space for deaf learners. School headmaster Muhammad Hamka Eallie praised Stefanus's work, saying he has transformed how the school views learning and inclusion. 'He does not see their disabilities but rather he sees their potential,' said Hamka. The award ceremony was graced by Deputy Educational Resources and Technology Division Director Fadzliaton Zainudin at the Ministry of Education Malaysia, who delivered a keynote address to commemorate the occasion. 'Taylor's College has consistently championed quality education by recognising and supporting the incredible efforts of educators on the ground. 'The RISE Educator Award highlights how real change often starts with small, consistent acts of care and dedication,' she said. She said Ministry of Education commends Taylor's College for establishing a platform that goes beyond recognising outstanding educators but one that also fosters collaboration, inspires innovation and encourages the exchange of impactful practices that uplift our schools and communities. Meanwhile, Taylor's College Campus Director Josephine Tan said that over the past five years, the RISE Educator Award has revealed the remarkable resilience and creativity of teachers who quietly transform the meaning of education. 'These educators do not wait for ideal conditions, they create opportunities with what they have. What drives them is not just innovation, but deep purpose and belief in their students. Many even fund their own projects, expecting little recognition in return,' she said. 'The RISE Educator Award has grown into more than just a reward, it is now a platform that brings educators, communities and change makers together to celebrate impact, exchange ideas and inspire one another. 'It reflects our belief that when we invest in educators, we are investing in the future and we are confident they will continue to spark even greater change,' she said, adding that the RISE Educator Award is more than a celebration but also a commitment to uplift and invest in educators who are changing lives. Since its inception, the RISE Educator Award has celebrated 18 educators and channelled more than RM200, 000 in grants and development support to schools across the country. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Taiwan-based Malaysian singer Gary Chaw reportedly hasn't moved on from ex-wife: 'Still in pain'
It's been nearly three years since Malaysian singer Gary Chaw divorced Taiwanese fashion blogger Wu Shuling, but it seems he hasn't fully moved on. The 46-year-old recently shared on Xiaohongshu (Red Note) a video of himself singing his 2019 song I'm Just A Fool – a ballad in which he confronts his shortcomings and expresses his unconditional devotion. The post quickly drew attention, with many netizens praising Chaw's soulful vocals, while others shared how the performance evoked a deep sense of nostalgia. According to China Press, Chaw also left two comments about Wu under his video. The former couple, who divorced in November 2022 after 14 years of marriage, share two children – Joe, 16, and Grace, 14. 'I still haven't forgotten Shuling,' read one of the comments. 'Actually, I'm still in pain,' he wrote in another. It's reported that Chaw later deleted both comments mentioning Wu. This isn't the first time the singer has shown that he's still struggling to move on. In July 2023, Chaw made a series of Instagram posts about his ex-wife and their children – including a throwback wedding photo of him and Wu smiling blissfully. 'I'm messed up... But I still love her,' he wrote at that time. A few months later, while performing his song Zhang Wen during a concert in Taipei, Chaw altered the original lyric 'There is no winning or losing' to 'There is no Shuling'. 'I still love her… Taking it one step at a time,' he said back then.
