Delhi floats tender for 12K plantations to beautify SP Marg

Around 12,000 flowering trees and shrubs, including amaltas and bougainvillaea, will be planted along the Sardar Patel Marg to beautify it and a tender has been floated for the same, officials of the Delhi forest and wildlife department said on Wednesday.
A similar drive in June 2023—wherein Delhi lieutenant governor VK Saxena asked the forest department for a five-layered plantation of around six flowering species at the ridge, including chinar and cherry blossoms, in the run-up to the G20 Summit—did not yield desired results, a senior forest department official said on condition of anonymity. The drive focused on the side facing SP Marg as it provided access to visitors and dignitaries commuting between central Delhi and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The forest department official said the plantation drive is likely to commence in monsoon season, and fully grown saplings—around 10 to 12 feet high—will be planted. 'The aim is to beautify the initial part of the stretch adjacent to the forest with flowering trees and shrubs. This will make the approach aesthetically pleasing and we are focusing on native species,' the official said.
They said over 1,000 each of amaltas, Lagerstroemia speciosa (Queen's crepe myrtle), and Tabebuia rosea (rosy trumpet tree) will be planted, and around 8,400 bougainvillea will be planted, according to the tender. The last date for submitting bids is June 2, as per the tender dated May 26.
The forest official said that while the species are not expected to flower this year, there is a possibility some species may flower by next year.
Experts, however, questioned the choice of species selected.
Environmentalist Pradip Krishen said that barring amaltas, the remaining three species were not native to the ridge. 'Even bougainvillaea may survive in the ridge, but that does not mean it is a good reason to plant it there. Just because a species is able to grow on thin rocky soils, you cannot let ornamental exotic plants be introduced there. On one hand, the forest department says is ecologically restoring the ridge, but at the same time, it is opting for such species which are not native at all,' he said.
Delhi has four prominent ridge areas, with a total area of around 7,784 hectares. The largest—the Southern Ridge—is spread over 6,200 hectares. Central Ridge is the next largest, with an area of 864 hectares. The South-Central Ridge in Mehrauli is spread across 626 hectares and the Northern Ridge is spread across 87 hectares. The Nanakpura south-central ridge is spread across seven hectares.

Urban Extension Road-II: Check key features of Delhi-NCR's new highway project

Urban Extension Road 2 Project: The newly inaugurated Urban Extension Road 2 project addresses Delhi's long-standing traffic congestion and connectivity issues. With the opening of this highway, the travel time and traffic will get reduced in Delhi-NCR. Thus, it will further improve ease of living and ensures seamless mobility in the region. The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) project connects NH-44, NH-09 and the Dwarka Expressway to decongest Delhi and strengthen regional connectivity. The commuters travelling from Chandigarh can reach Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in much lesser time. It further strengthened inter-state connectivity with Haryana, Punjab, J&K and Uttarakhand. The Urban Extension Road-II project utilised 10 lakh MT of inert material from Bhalswa and Ghazipur MCD sites and ensured the transplantation of over 10,000 trees. The project is also set to drive socio-economic growth across developing areas of the national capital.

‘Investment in future of Delhi': CM thanks PM Modi for construction of UER-II

Ahead of the inauguration of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its construction. 'UER-II is not just an infrastructure project… It is an investment in the future of Delhi. It will improve traffic flow, cut travel time drastically, and uplift the quality of life for lakhs of people living in Delhi and NCR,' the CM asserted. The UER-II, the CM underlined, will emerge as the backbone of high-speed connectivity, linking Delhi not just with the National Capital Region (NCR) but with the entire country. Travelling to Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Jaipur and even Mumbai will become faster and more convenient. It is truly a 'transformative' project for the people of Delhi and beyond, Gupta said. The CM made the remarks as she visited the inauguration site, along with senior officials and party leaders, to review the preparations for Sunday's event. Describing the project as a 'historic gift' for the city, Gupta said that the commencement of UER-II will not move Delhi closer to becoming a 'traffic-free' Capital. She added that the corridor will play a vital role in reducing congestion, lowering vehicular pollution and thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. 'The pressure on Inner and Outer Ring Roads will be substantially reduced, while major junctions such as Mukarba Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Peeragarhi Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-9 will no longer face heavy congestion. This will be a huge relief for lakhs of daily commuters,' the CM said. Gupta said that the corridor will begin at National Highway-44 (Alipur), traverse through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka, and terminate at National Highway-48 near Mahipalpur. It is also expected to reduce travel time between Singhu Border to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport from two hours to 40 minutes. The project will link to the industrial hubs of Sonipat and Bahadurgarh through dedicated link roads, giving a direct boost to industry and facilitating faster movement of goods, the CM highlighted. 'With smoother traffic flow and shorter travel time, fuel consumption will decrease significantly, contributing to lower emissions. The UER-II will directly aid in reducing air-pollution levels and improving the overall environment of the capital,' she underlined. A statement from the Prime Minister's office underlined that PM Modi will inaugurate two major National Highway projects worth a combined cost of nearly Rs.11,000 crore — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).

PM Modi To Inaugurate Delhi Section Of Dwarka Expressway Tomorrow: Key Details

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2) on Sunday. The new infrastructure links are expected to ease connectivity between Noida and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Travel Time Cut Drastically At present, commuters from Noida to IGI Airport face journeys of over an hour, often longer during rush hour. With UER-2 and the Dwarka Expressway in place, the same trip is expected to take around 20 minutes. Length And Alignment The Dwarka Expressway stretches 29 kilometres in total. Of this, 10.1 kilometres lie within Delhi, while the remaining 18.9 kilometres fall in Haryana. The Expressway links Mahipalpur in the capital to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. Cost And Construction Built at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, the expressway was developed in four construction packages. It has been designed to handle heavy volumes of traffic and reduce dependence on existing congested corridors. Highway Design The expressway is an eight-lane, grade-separated highway, with a provision for three-lane service roads on both sides. It has multi-level interchanges and underpasses at various junctions, ensuring smoother vehicular movement. Multi-Level Design Nearly three-fourths of the Dwarka Expressway's stretch runs on elevated tracks, keeping it fully segregated from city traffic. Vehicles move across three levels. These include the elevated expressway, surface roads and a network of underpasses. Smart Tolling Plans The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids to introduce multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling. Connectivity To IGI Airport A major feature of the project is a tunnel linking the expressway directly to Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Delhi section underwent trial runs of tunnels and underpasses earlier this year, in May, ahead of today's inauguration. Haryana Section Already Operational The Haryana portion of the expressway was inaugurated by PM Modi in March 2024. It is India's first expressway built on single pillars, and comes equipped with multiple service roads and underpasses to aid traffic flow.
