Twins topple Mariners 10-1 to split four-game series
June 27 - Trevor Larnach homered, singled, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Minnesota Twins in a 10-1 win against the visiting Seattle Mariners on Thursday, helping them earn a split of the four-game series in Minneapolis.
Brooks Lee and Matt Wallner also homered, Carlos Correa had two RBIs and Byron Buxton scored two runs in the leadoff spot for the Twins, who have won two in a row following a five-game skid.
Twins right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson (3-4) came in winless in his past six starts, but he earned the victory after allowing just two hits over five shutout innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Seattle starter Emerson Hancock (3-4) limited the Twins to two runs and three hits over five innings, striking out two and walking three, but the bullpen surrendered eight runs in the sixth.
The start of the game was delayed four hours and 22 minutes because of rain.
Buxton walked with one out in the fifth inning and took second on an errant pickoff attempt by Hancock. Larnach then belted a 2-1 changeup into the seats in right field for a 2-0 lead.
The sixth inning began with Lee blasting a home run off reliever Zach Pop for a 3-0 lead.
After back-to-back one-out walks, Buxton doubled in a run to make it 4-0. Another run came home on a throwing error before Willi Castro delivered an RBI double, followed by a two-run single from Correa and a two-run homer by Wallner to make it 10-0.
Seattle backup catcher Mitch Garver left in the same inning after taking a foul ball off his mask. He was replaced by designated hitter Cal Raleigh, costing the Mariners their DH for the remainder of the game.
Brock Stewart replaced Woods Richardson to start the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to J.P. Crawford before retiring the next three batters. Danny Coulombe and Justin Topa followed with shutout innings of relief for Minnesota before the Mariners strung together three straight two-out singles off Cole Sands in the ninth to end the shutout bid. Miles Mastrobuoni had the RBI for Seattle.

Alonso's tactical shift sees Real Madrid top Group H with comfortable win over Salzburg
PHILADELPHIA, June 26 (Reuters) - New Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso introduced a bold tactical change as his side defeated RB Salzburg 3-0 on Thursday to finish as Group H winners and set up a mouth-watering last 16 tie against Juventus at the Club World Cup. Alonso, who arrived at Real with a reputation for innovative tactics following his trophy-laden stint at Bayer Leverkusen, fielded a five-man defence for the first time since taking over. The system, featuring three centre backs and aggressive wing backs, marked a significant departure from the traditional 4-3-3 formation used by predecessors Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane over the past decade. The change evoked memories of Vicente del Bosque's 2000 Champions League-winning side, the last Real Madrid team to adopt such a structure. "We're taking it step-by-step," Vinicius Jr told DAZN. "Of course, we can't fully adapt to the coach's ideas so quickly, it takes time. But today was a good game for that, especially in the first half." Alonso had utilised a four-man defence in Real's earlier group matches, a 1-1 draw with Al Hilal and a 3-1 victory over Pachuca. On Thursday Aurelien Tchouameni was deployed between centre backs Antonio Ruediger and Dean Huijsen, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran Garcia operating as the wing backs. Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler played as creative midfielders with Federico Valverde in a holding role, while Vinicius Jr and Gonzalo Garcia led the attack. The tactical shift paid dividends as Real Madrid dominated proceedings. Bellingham and Guler consistently found Vinicius in dangerous positions and the Brazilian opened the scoring in the 40th minute, weaving past two defenders before firing into the bottom-right corner. He then assisted on Valverde's goal in first-half added time with a deft back-heeled pass. Forward Gonzalo Garcia sealed the win in the 84th minute, lobbing the Salzburg keeper to cap a swift counter-attack. The performance was a marked improvement from Real's earlier group matches, where they appeared unconvincing at times. "The first half was serious. We played patiently, knowing that we couldn't win in 10 minutes and that we had to be mature to find our opportunity," Alonso told reporters. "We started the second half well and, with the score at 3-0, I'm happy with the lads." Real Madrid next face Italy's Juventus in the round of 16 on Tuesday, when Alonso's tactical approach will come under greater scrutiny. He is expected to have forward Kylian Mbappe available after the Frenchman missed the group stage due to illness. "Let's wait and see, I don't want to get ahead of myself. We thought Kylian would be ready for this match, but it wasn't to be," Alonso said. "Now we have four days. I want to be optimistic, but also cautious."

Ilia Topuria predicts first-round KO of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317
June 27 - LAS VEGAS -- Ilia Topuria's emergence as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world has propelled him to the biggest stage of his career as he takes on former champion and future Hall of Famer Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title on Saturday night at UFC 317. The bout headlines International Fight Week, which has become the UFC's Super Bowl weekend equivalent since debuting ahead of UFC 148 in 2012. Anderson Silva, Jon Jones and Conor McGregor are among the stars who have taken part in the week's marquee fight over the years. In McGregor's case, his showmanship leading up to a second-round TKO of Chad Mendes at UFC 189 in 2015 marked one of the defining moments in his rise to mainstream superstardom. It's no secret that the undefeated Topuria, who ranks third on UFC's pound-for-pound list, seeks a similarly defining moment Saturday. The former featherweight champion has been adamant that he believes a stoppage is coming within the first two or three minutes of the fight. Saturday will mark Topuria's return to the lightweight division after he vacated the featherweight belt in April in pursuit of becoming a two-division champion. And best believe Topuria knows what kind of statement knocking out a legend like Oliveira in the first round would make. "(It would say) I'm the best fighter in the world," Topuria said. "It's not about if I'm going to win the belt; I'm going to do it. I'm going to knock him out in the first round ... If you beat legend after legend, you'll eventually become a legend." Topuria won the featherweight belt in February 2024 with a second-round knockout of former champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 before succeeding in his lone title defense against Max Holloway at UFC 308 in October. He has bounced between weight classes throughout his career, having fought professionally at bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight. A significant reason for Topuria's insistence that Saturday's fight will end so early is his respect for the fact Oliveira will be on the attack as soon as the bell rings. In Oliveira's eyes, meanwhile, he sees Topuria joining the long list of opponents who have made empty promises to put him down. "In reality, everyone knows what's going to happen," said the 35-year-old Oliveira, who has not worn the title belt since 2022. "He's another guy talking who's going to fold in front of me. This is something huge. About legacy, about dreams, about how much I'm alive and hungry for it. That's what I am. I'm going to be a champion again." The co-main event features champion Alexandre Pantoja, who is making his fourth flyweight title defense against fourth-ranked Kai Kara-France. Pantoja is currently tied for ninth in the UFC's pound-for-pound fighters ranking. Kara-France previously fought Brandon Moreno for the interim flyweight championship at UFC 277, losing by TKO at 4:34 in the third round.
